I also managed to sink down twenty feet in some powder that had sloughed down the side and spent an hour digging myself out. Additionally, my entire body aches and this was a no good, very bad day.

That sounds particularly horrifying.
Really, I'd probably freak the hell out if I sunk down into 20 feet of snow. I don't do so well in confined spaces. Glad to hear Uncle Long lived to tell the tale! Also a relief to hear your equipment survived! I'm always so paranoid about that.
EDIT: Hmm, it seems work has blocked photobucket again.
The colours in that are pretty scalding, projectmayhem. Try pulling the temperature back a bit. Also yeah the blown out area in the bottom right is distracting.

Also, I just won the Alaska Press Club's "Best Scenic Photo" for a small newspaper in 2007. Woot!
As for the scary thing in the bottom right, it's the start of what will one day be my logo. I just threw it there to keep them from wanting to make prints of it.

Welp, back to lightroom!
From that sized image? Or a larger one?
Because if they're going to try to make prints from that size. . . I mean, what are they gonna get? Wallets?
i work in an office
and let me tell you
people will find things that are like 100 x 100 and expand them and print them out and put them up on their cubicle wall
do they care that it's grainy?

Honestly
At that point
Let 'em have it.
If they're willing to do that, then they don't find the quality of a real print to be worthwhile, and they probably wouldn't've bought a print from you anyway.
Are you really going to lose a sale of a print over that? Are they even buying prints from you? Did you already get paid?
EDIT: Also, what makes you think they wouldn't just print it out with the little head on it anyway? :P

Yeah I sent them that size that I posted about to give them an idea of how they turned out. I wanted to make sure they didnt just take it to shutterfly and have prints run off.
i like the subject matter and the glossy eye but the picture as a whole comes across very flat, to me
looks over-saturated, maybe? the dramatic white on the back behind the ear makes me feel like its on the same plane as the ridge where the ear connects to the head
Sher', this is brilliant. I like everything about it, just everything. Love it lots. :^:
That cow is just... just so compassionate! I think it is looking into my soul, and saying (lowing) to me that I am an okay guy.
Edit: and yes, it does have a very interesting, flat appearance, but it helps the photo, not hinders. It actually makes it look almost like a collage of oil painting and photo, with the out-of-focus bit being the painting, and the face being the photo. It's really gorgeous all around.
ProjectMayhem: Really nice colors there, though the space to the right seems a wee excessive; personal preference mostly though.
Bomb, that fifth one takes the cake for me with the neato rocks. Third is a close second because of the shadows meeting the trees, nice diag/horizontal meetup.
The sun came out yesterday, imagine that. Then it promptly started playing peekaboo.

I really like your woman and mirrors illustration. I know this isn't the thread for it, but nicely done.
@Sheri: Love the Giraffe for pretty much the same reasons as Gilrain. @Bombardier: I like the texture of the second one, the different colours, light and sense of depth of the third, and I love the sixth!
Also, I don't know if anyone noticed, last wednesday Canon announced a few new products. A couple of printers, Canon 500D/Rebel T1i and a new speedlite 270ex to replace the entry level 220. The new one actually has a 90degree swivel head which I thought was long overdue for that model.
Canon cameras are also getting an 18MM Zeiss lens that's been available to Nikon and Pentax users for awhile. DPReview also got around to reviewing the 50MM F/1.8mm and came to the same conclusion the rest of the planet came to a long ass time ago: It's a steal!
So I've been a bit absent lately. Trying to get a jorb and all. Anyways, everyone's stuff's been great lately. I'm just gonna go over the last couple pages though.
Bombs: Love the greenerery, won't get sick of it. The first photo is my favorite.
nO: Liked the whole flower series a lot. Especially the B&W one, but the colors were pretty incredible.
On your composition, I really like the feel you're going for, seems a bit busy with a lot going on though.
Virum: Really like the melding of the silhoutte and regular photo, great composition too.
Pipe: Lizard photo from a few pages back is tops, DoF is great on it.
Sheri: that crop is freak'n great on the giraffe.
ProjectM: Kids may be hard to shoot, but they're great for practice. They move around so much it really makes you think quickly about composition and whatnot. And you got a good shot out of it!
Astorite: tree/wall.
I took photos this weekend of a pretty lady friend this weekend
Someone wants to buy a 5 x 7 and/or 8 1/2 x 11 in black and white and/or color (she doesn't know yet apparently) of one of my sports photos I do here at school... needless to say, I'm pretty excited since this never happened to me. It's of her son playing lacrosse.
I'm pretty sure she doesn't want it framed and all that, just the print and then mailed to her. Since printing isn't really that much of a cost, any ideas on what I should charge/ask for?
I'll ask her about the details (size/color or not, etc) but just a general idea would be appreciated!
I usually charge $10 for a 5x7 and $20 for an 8x10 when it comes to event stuff. Mom's really don't pay more than that here and it's a volume game. Eight players x X games per season x size of print/quantity usually works out alright.
Edit: Whilst I'm ranting, I'll also through this out. I've heard it occasionally mentioned that using anything but a prime lens makes you somehow "lazy" in regards to composition. Can someone please explain this to me? Because I just don't get it. Knowing good composition of a scene is the same regardless of whether you have to move the camera physically, or adjust the zoom. If anything I'd say having a zoom lens forces you to get better with composition, because you have less of an excuse for not framing something properly.
I think it's because it makes you think a bit more about the photo you are taking. You can't just zoom in on the subject and snap away. At least, it's that way for me.

Performed my first sensor cleaning today. Must say - it's not that big a deal. Takes a steady hand, but the results are great.
If anyone is interested in what I used:
Blower, Giottos Rocket-Air Large
D-SLR BrushT - Sensor Cleaning Brush for 1.3x w/ChamberSwab®
Eclipse Cleaning System Solution
Sensor Swab Type 3 (Box of 12)
A sensor cleaning at a shop costs $75.
All these items together cost me $80. I have enough swabs for 12 cleanings.
Then a refill is only $35.
Obil: That looks like some weird alternate-universe slice of life. I actually would love some kind of series like that.
Prosp: I can't help but think I'd like the one with her by the door without the door; its drawing my attention from the figure, though maybe that was the intent/story behind it sort of.

That sounds particularly horrifying.
Control those highlights on the bottom right.
It's a little contrast-heavy, but I don't mind too much. Love the colors. Can't wait to see the rest.

So fast! Also the second one's tilt was inspired by your tilt prowess.
Thanks Sheri! Those ones are weird in how they came out almost HDR looking but it's not a comp or anything.

You've still got a lot of work to do before you're as ornery and sarcastic as I am, but you're getting there.

I'm just used to SE++ style ornerism, which involves more superfluous curse words and lots of insults about your mother.
It's hard to adapt.
