So a local photog is selling a 1DMkII with 14k clicks on it for $875USD/$1100CAD. This is $400CAD under the going price for a 5D in decent shape as well as under the going rate for a 1DMkII in town. How big of a step sideways would that camera be compared to a 5D?

nO, cool texture. What's up with the date/graphic?

Get the 5D. It's the right camera for you. The allure of the pro body is understandable, but the pros of the 5D for your style and what I've seen so far will far outweigh any advantages offered by the mkII. If it was the 1ds mkII, then perhaps there might be some more consideration, but it's not.

Well if it were a 1Ds MkII for $1100 I'd buy it in a picosecond, if only to resell it for the $5k it's worth :P. I'm worried about finding a good 5D at a reasonable price somewhere nearby me, though. Given the current state of the Canadian dollar (worthless), I can't buy from the states. Completely out the question, the cheapest 5D there is $1800CAD before shipping. 5Ds only seem to come up in Canada every month or so, and tend to be on the expensive end of $1500-1600. That's not bad, by itself: but they're never in my city. There'd likely be a roadtrip involved in picking one up when it does eventually come for sale at a decent price.

    Decisions, decisions.

Edit: Okay, so under ISO1600 noise differences are negligible between the 5D and the the 1DMkII. Hmm.

salti, that is a really awesome look. As always, I have quibbles. White lines on the right side of the frame and just above the figure - distracting and easily removed. I also really wish the girl had been positioned such that all of her scarf was in frame during every exposure, but that one’s not so easy a fix. Still a kickass image and a look I hope you develop further.

Thanks for the crit. I agree with your comments. This one was really a trial run to see if I could do it without getting massive amounts of flare and it worked! So hopefully I will have some more fleshed out images using this technique next week.

EDIT: Might as well ask this here instead of making a new post. Anyone have a 350D whose DOF preview button has just randomly stopped working? Mine just all of a sudden stopped working, I've tried with multiple lenses and it's sort of annoying as I've used it plenty of times before.

You've probably already checked this but when trying to use the DOF preview button you aren't at the widest aperture are you because that will make it look like the button is doing nothing.

Well, the simplest way would be to open up your hue/saturation menu, select the color you're going to mess with from the drop down window (obviously you don't just want to adjust master) then adjust lightness and saturation (and tonal value if you're so inclined). Blending layers for each value should smooth things out, but you don't need to alter the layer's blending options.

    Alternatively, get Lightroom.

Lightroom is great for a lot of things, and because of the kind of stuff I do at work it really helps my workflow, but it can't do everything. Luckily you can switch really quickly between LR and PS by quick tapping Cmd+e.

I'm guessing you use Lightroom 2 and CS4? I've been playing with the trials of both and I find CS4 so much easier to work with pictures with those quick selections compared to CS3 and the switch between editing a RAW from Lightroom to CS4 is so much quicker now that Photoshop opens the RAW image directly instead of Lightroom first asking you what to do, then saving a TIFF, etc.
