Halp me about NY

college illustration seniors going to NY in 3 weeks, and i was wondering
1) Is it practical to get to the upper east side from JFK using the subway? google maps seems to be putting me on buses and whatnot. isn't it possible to just get on a subway in JFK and sit there till i'm in manhatten?

these are partly repeats from an old thread but:
2) Can anyone tell be a good bar or club for dancing, drinking having fun. nothing where overdressed people spend hours lining up behind a bouncer.
3) what is a good karaoke place on the east side of the city? pref. on the east side or near my hostel (Broadway Hostel, 101st ST and Broadway). preferably nothing with private rooms.
4) a good (fun) restaurant to bring a group of people (29 persons)? around the financial district perhaps?

hope i'm not breaking any rules by re-posting the latter 3 questions, but i was really wondering about the subway thingy.

    1) It's possible I don't know how practical it is. The A train stops in JFK I believe, but it doesn't run to the Upper East Side. You'd have to change to the 4,5,6 line at Fulton Street which, if I recall, is a bit of a hike underground because the lines aren't exactly next to each other. I'd estimate around 2 hours to get to the upper east side.

The best way to get into Manhattan from JFK via public transit is to take Airtrain (around $5) to Jamaica, Queens and from there take the LIRR (long island rail road) to Penn Station. The Airtrain ride is about 10 minutes and the LIRR from Jamaica is about 25 minutes. However Penn Station is at 34th street on the west side, so you'll have to take the subway. As you can see from this map the only line running on the east side is the 4,5,6 which does not run through Penn Station so you'll have to make some transfers which could be a hassle depending on how much luggage you have.

The best option for you is probably taking at private shuttle. Private shuttles are around $15 and run from JFK to Grand Central, Penn Station, or Port Authority. You can take a private shuttle to Grand Central and hop on the 4,5,6 line from there.

Also, Taxis have a $45 flat rate from JFK to Manhattan. Just in case you were wondering.

    2) I don't dance so I'm not much use there. Most club clubs are exactly what you want to avoid, though there used to be a dive in the east village that played 80s music where people danced, so I'm sure places are out there. The east village is generally a fun area to hang out as there are a lot of bars, restaurants, and generally young people, but not really a lot of places for dancing. Webster Hall acts as a club when it's not a show venue. I've never checked it out, but there are good shows there so maybe it's a fun club. I have noticed that people dance at Lit after midnight when the rock shows are over. It's a small space though.

    3) I thought good karaoke was an oxymoron. I'm not much use here either.

However, any Hostel worth its salt should be able to direct you to nearby nightlife that you'd enjoy. Just ask the people running the place.

    4) 29 people? I've honestly no idea. I'm guessing you'll be looking for a private room or something right? What's your price range?

    Your #4 is.... lofty.

You'd need a private room, a large one.

Heartland Brewery probably has one big enough. It's in Times Square. Beyond that, I would look at hotel restaurants and such. They are usually more adept at cranking out that much food at once and generally have space available for a group that large.

Most restaurants in NYC would shit a brick if you called them and wanted to make a reservation with that many people.

agreed... but there's no way in hell you'll get into a karaoke joint with 29 people without a reservation made well in advance... same for restaurants

actually, the one interesting place i can recommend is a huge buffet in korea town... it's called Todai and it's the width of a city block... you should be able to get your group in there during a non-prime dinner/lunch time.

Also, if you like Dim-Sum, try the Golden Unicorn in chinatown... it's several floors of communal chinese eating... so you might be able to squeeze your group in (but again, not during the prime dim-sum hours on weekend mornings)

For all other things, i'd highly suggest your group split up... this is a very tightly packed city, and finding any place that can accommodate nearly 30 people will be a huge challenge (+ don't forget that most restaurants will automatically add a tip to the bill for a party of 5 or more)

Oh, yeah, Todai is good and roomy, but still 30 people is absurd
You can't do anything with 30 people

Thanks for al the advice guys.. I guess i'll probably have to split up the group.
i kinda underestimated how big a group of 29 people really is... We could easily fill up one "wing" of a large sized restaurant... no restaurant is really waiting for a group of our size..

todai looks descent enough, i'll be sure to suggest it to the group (hope everyone's up for sushi..).
That Brewery place also looks like it could fit our group, i'll think i'll be adding that to the list.
i think we'll be trying out dave and busters and the brewery with the group, and as many people i can get to tag along for todai. we'll be dining in smaller groups for most of the week, but i'd like to get everyone together a few times...

And when asking about directions from JFK i kinda messed up and typed EAST instead of WEST (where my hostel is). so oops.
i guess i'll just ride the A subway to JFK or take the 1 to Penn st. and do the airtrain/ LIRR/jamaica thing then..

i'll be sure to consult our hostel for descent nightlife spots.. And as for the "good karaoke". I'm not much of a karaoke-man myself, but i know some of our group love it... i'll just send 'em off to ktown :)

Just be sure to contact the Brewery before you show up.

Let them know the group size and that you'd like to know about renting a room.

Have a good time in the city!
