    I have a story.

It is not for any of the consoles. It's for PC. Kind of.

Every week, my older sister and I would go to the library, when we were growing up. That library has since built a new building entirely... it was a long time ago.

While our parents would look for books for us and sometimes them, we would play on the computers the library had set up pretty much to amuse the kids while the parents did something else.

Sometimes we would play the classics: Oregon Trail... Number munchers... there was this one math-based drag-racing game I liked... but the gem was when we would play The Black Cauldron. Old SCUMM game. Based on the movie. It was awesome. Man we would play that game so much.

Unfortunately, we are the only ones. It's like a dream from childhood that only we remember. But it was a game. And it rocked.

    For the gamecube.

My brother picked it up during christmas for 10 dollars, oh my god. Possibly one of the hardest yet funnest games I have ever played.

That actually sounds really cool. I've added it to my Goozex list, and it looks like I'll be matched up rather shortly. Hopefully the sender isn't a tard and actually sends the microphone with the game. A quick google search reveals it plays perfectly on the Wii, so here's hoping!

For being so serious about what gets on the list, you have some pretty non-obscure titles on there. Outlaw Golf? Really? And ZoE is quite popular around these parts, just as much as Psychonauts.

The Black Cauldron is an AGI Sierra game, not a SCUMM game. Unlike SCUMM games, you directly input text and you can die.

I remain confident that LOOM is the best SCUMM game.

Not surprised, no one really cared at the time it was released.

It's a fun game. Not as good as III(my favorite), but still enjoyable. It does have the best graphics in the series going for it.

Yeah, Odama is obscure because it's really pretty bad. I was all excited about it, picked it up for 10 bucks - it's just so confusing to play, the controls aren't very good, and I spend half the time just trying not to kill my own troops with the damn pinball.

    I am sold on i-Ninja

I agree that the restrictions need to be loosened up though. The GCN has only 263 titles on MetaCritic with scores of 70 or above. I doubt more than a handful could be called obscure at all. I've heard of nearly all of them, and I'm not what you would call hardcore these days.

I'll also chime in and agree that "obscure" is a pretty tall order, given that we have, you know, the internet, and this is a collection of people who really care about games.

And excluding the PC is just ridiculous. More obscure PC games exist than the entire libraries of the GCN, PS2, and X-Box combined, simply because there's no licensing requirement for the PC.

    Also, why exclude other generations?

I guess what I'm saying, is a good, under appreciated game is a good, under appreciated game. Regardless of what hardware it's supposed to run on.

Mashed: Fully Loaded for PS2 and Xbox is my favorite multiplayer PS2 game and should be obscure enough seeing as it didn't even get a us release. It's an overhead 4 player racer with wonky physics, unbalanced weapons and cheesy one liners. Each race is won by the first to steal a number of points from the other drivers, by killing them or leaving them behind (the bottom edge of the screen also kills). Recently killed players can pass the time by calling air strikes on the remaining cars, making for some interesting couch diplomacy.
The version that made it to US is also obscure-ish:
Mashed: Drive to Survive, is still tons of fun, just fewer tracks, worse graphics and even wonkier car physics.

For being so serious about what gets on the list, you have some pretty non-obscure titles on there. Outlaw Golf? Really? And ZoE is quite popular around these parts, just as much as Psychonauts.

I have already said that I don't know enough about Xbox titles, so I'm relying on you guys to steer me right. ZoE isn't on the list, so I don't know why you're bitching about a game just because I used it in a title graphic.

    ...

On an entirely general note, there were some good suggestions at the start of this thread, so I don't want to get too mad, but some of you guys are retarded enough that I need to remind you all of some things:

    1. Bold your titles
Game titles need to stand out so that I can see them amidst all of your whiny complaining about the PC.

    2. I'm not including PC, DC, PS1, N64 or any other consoles that you think are worthy
Including the PC would broaden the list far too much. Along with the DC, PS1 and other older consoles, it causes a problem in that tracking down these titles would be hard. The PS2, Xbox and GC are unique in that they're old, so it's cheap to buy games for them, but not so old that those games are disappearing.

    3. I'm not loosening the definition of obscure
I realise that some of the more megatarded here are having problems with this, since for some dumbass reason you want to start listing games that everyone has heard of. I'll spell it out simply:

Ideally, the list would be empty.

I'm thoroughly pissed that there are good games in the previous generation that I've never heard of. If I never hear of these games, then that will be bad. This is a list of games that most people will never hear of. If most people have heard of it, it's not going on the list. Since we're on a gaming forum, that means that most people have heard of your "obscure" games.

This isn't an exercise in seeing how many cult game titles you can cough up. And I'm not looking for a list of games hundreds of titles long. This is an exercise in making sure that people know there are good games out there that they've never heard of before. So ideally, the list wouldn't have any titles on it because we'd all be educated enough to know about them.

To make games less obscure. To him, and in the process, to us. Its basically a recommend on of obscure game titles. Sounds pretty reasonable.

    Air Force Delta Storm Xbox
    Blood Wake Xbox
    Blackstone: Magic and Steel Xbox
    Nightcaster Xbox
    Phantom Crash Xbox
    Broken Sword 3 Xbox

Not the best games ever, but they seem fairly obscure. Probably as obscure as you are ever going to get on Xbox other than the titles already mentioned like Metal Wolf Chaos and Gunvalyrie.

And, for the record, Brute Force is not rare. But it was also nowhere near as terrible as everyone pretends it as.

I don't think a whole lot of people are familiar with the Kingdom Under Fire games.

Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders - Xbox
Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes - Xbox

Awesome beat 'em up/strategy/RPG hybrids. There's also a straight RTS game on the PC, and a diablo-esque dungeon hack on the 360, but the former is as obscure as it gets, and the latter is a humongous piece of shit.

They revolve around large scale medieval fantasy combat, are extremely difficult, but also really, really awesome. Kingdom Under Fire 2 will be released on 360/PS3 later this year (presumably). The first game (Crusaders) is backwards compatible, but the second game, unfortunately, is not. Still, they're worth tracking down just for the sheer awesomeness of heavy metal warfare.

I have very little idea of the point you're trying to make here, but I suspect it's absolutely retarded nonetheless.

The fact that we've even got games ON the lists means it's working, and I've already bought a game for my PS2 that I never knew existed because of this thread.

The purpose of this thread is to say "Here's a game that you've never heard of which you can go and buy right now. It's awesome".

And then the one guy will say "Wow, this game is awesome. I never would have come across this if that fucking awesome thread never came about".

And then another guy will say "Yeah, that thread was great, except for all the retards who started being whiny pussy-bitches because I don't even know why".

And then Jesus jumps in wearing his cape and he's all like "Yeah, those whiny bitches are the worst."

And that's the end of Act I. Act II is conveniently titled FUCK YOU.

Is Act II the one where you whine about people whining, in a comically hostile fashion?

My post was basically saying you're asking for obscure titles, and when people post what they think is obscure, you whine and bitch that they're not reading your rules... because you don't think they're obscure.

I've heard of none of the games people have listed in this thread (except the painfully obvious ones), so they're all obscure to me. People are posting these games because they think most people wouldn't have heard of them, and maybe they'd enjoy them. Perhaps you should list all the games you've heard of so we don't hurt your feelings any more by posting them?

Nobody can follow these rules. I can't suggest games that make it onto an empty list.

Nothing exists in the last generation that's so obscure that Penny Arcade doesn't know about it and it's well known enough to have a metacritic score of 70 or better.

Is there even one game on there that's so obscure that PA's never discussed it?

My post was basically saying you're asking for obscure titles, and when people post what they think is obscure, you whine and bitch that they're not reading your rules... because you don't think they're obscure.

Obviously I've got some say in this, but I'm hoping for a community effort here. If it seems like enough people have heard of a title, then it probably shouldn't go on the list.

I'll admit that one of the main flaws here is that we've got no near-objective measure of "Obscure", unlike our ability to get a near-objective rating from Metacritic. Suggestions are welcome.

Yeah, there are several games on your list that I've seen discussed around here a good bit. If we're only going by YOUR completely subjective measure of obscure, then it's kind of pointless, because then it's the 'games I've never heard of' list.

I see that there's a Growlanser game in the recommended list. Now I always read that one of the PS2 ones was great and the other was terrible but forget which was which whenever I'm on Ebay.

So Generations was the good one?

Yes. The one Atlus released a couple years back, Heritage of War, is the mediocre one.

Generations is amazing. Heritage of War is okay at best.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy - Gamecube, PS2, Xbox

Action-Adventure game like Zelda that is set in ancient Egypt where the Sphinx has a light-saber.

    Ribbit King - Gamecube, PS2

Golf game in which you hit a frog with a mallet.

    Scaler - Gamecube, PS2, Xbox

Budget platformer. A boy changes into many different lizards to save his lizard dad.

    Ghosthunter - PS2

    Shoot ghosts in 3rd person.

Dr. Muto - Gamecube, PS2, Xbox

Sister had this game... looked fun?

Except we're not doing that because I've said several times that I want everyone to weigh in on this stuff. So instead of continuing this argument, perhaps you'd like to tell me which of the games aren't obscure as far as you're concerned?
