The Return of Movie Club: Sleuth

ElkiElki get busyModerator, ClubPA Mod Emeritus
edited April 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
The first rule of movie club is that movie references can't be made into rules.

The second is that it'd be organized. Oh noes, that falls on me!

What is this club of movies? Well, the idea is that we pick a movie, watch it, and then talk about the movie.

What kind of movies, you ask? Great question. The movies we thought looked kinda cool, but never got around to watching. Occasionally the oldies we haven't watched in a while. Never the brand new blockbusters or 'indies' that everyone just got done talking to death.

This is how the it'll go down: We make a list of movies to watch, based on your suggestions. I'll veto any garbage nominated, because somebody's gotta do it. Every week, I'll pick 4 random movies from the list, we vote via liming & bolding, and the winner gets added to the queue.

And again...

A) No new releases.
B) No movies that everyone and their mother watched, and that includes nerd staples (you know what I'm talking about, Donnie)
C) No 'so bad it's good'. Let's just stick with the genuinely good stuff.

Spoilers: Normal rules apply. Spoiler all spoilers.

As you've noticed, there are already two movies in the queue, so we could have stuff to watch while we build a list and vote on it.

wait, robocop isn't one of those movies that everyone and their mother has seen? i thought it was. it was big enough to get a bunch of sequels, video games, toys, etc.

i'll nominate a cool movie: sexy beast. ben kingsley is incredible in that movie.

I'm up for this. I already have Robocop on DVD, but assuming The Apartment is the 1960 Jack Lemmon movie, Netflix doesn't even have it available.

I will nominate Lucky Number Slevin.

Would Slither count as so-bad-it's-good, or just good? Because I fucking love that movie.

What, seriously? That's insane! That's like not having Gone With The Wind or something.

And I am pumped about Robocop as the first choice. It is a classic, classic movie that I think gets woefully underestimated by people.

I nominate a movie by John Waters called "A Dirty Shame". The NC-17 version, not the R "Neuter" (what it says on the R DVD) version.

    Spoiler for plot
"Lust is in the air on Harford Road and Sylvia Stickles, a grumpy, repressed middle-aged Baltimorean, doesn't like it. Though Sylvia's handsome husband Vaughn still has marital urges, his wife could not be less interested -- she has more important things to do. Not only does Sylvia run the family's Pinewood Park and Pay convenience store, she's also responsible for watching over her exhibitionist daughter Caprice. A go-go dancer known to her adoring fans as Ursula Udders, Caprice and her stupendously enlarged breasts are currently under house arrest after several nude and disorderly violations. But Sylvia's world is turned upside down one day after suffering a concussion in a freak traffic accident. Sexy tow-truck driver Ray-Ray Perkins rushes to her aid and the stricken Sylvia realizes he is no ordinary service man; he's a sexual healer who brings Sylvia's hidden cauldron of lust to the boiling point." From IMBD.com

Anyone who has ever seen a John Waters movie knows this man's flicks are usually pretty bizarre. The cast is great. It has Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville, Selma Blair and Chris Isaak... None of whom play their usual roles. I'm not usually a huge fan of Ullman or Knoxville but they are both great in this movie.

I misunderstood and thought this would be a thread about how awesome Robocop is, and nothing to do with sequels etc. I was going to bust in and say how I saw Robocop when it first came out on VHS and it's been my very favourite movies since I was 9. D:

I've been watching the three Robocops on Hulu and it's amazing how much better the first one is than the other two.

And theme original theme is totally awesome.
