So massive battles in 3d-ish space.... is there in game voice? That would seem very key...
The number of MMOs that have their own in-game voice support is currently very close to zero, and it's not going to be increasing when STO releases.
edit:
it looks very surreal to have a star trek ship in a massive star battle and be joined by another friendly ship and seeing a chat bubble pop up from a massive ship saying "sup." or "sweet."

I want MMO's to have directional voice chat. Like, if two people in the distance are using it, I can barely hear it, but if they're up close I can hear it a bit better.
Of course, such a system would have to come with a very effective mute button, so I don't have to listen to "14 year old asperger case" singing about rape and sodomy while I browse the auction house for wares
LOTRO has team voice chat, but it sucks. Or maybe people's equipment sucks. All I know is half the time I can't hear shit, but people refuse to stop using it.
I really despise voice chat even when it works, though. I just prefer text for so many reasons.
LOTRO voice chat is just horrible. I can have the same exact people on Ventrilo and I hear them perfectly. Once it goes in game, I have to mute all other sounds to even begin to hear them in party.
In game voice chat is a very low priority for devs, because generally speaking, Ventrillo works very well and there is no need to develop an in-game version of something that can easily be run in the background.
Also, as far as the customization of your crew, I don't recall reading anything about being able to do that. What I do remember reading is that you'll be able to trade crewmen and customize your actual crew with characters that have strengths which match your play-style and objectives. In my head, I imagined that building a solid crew would be like a Pokemon style mini-game.

chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.

There's enough whining about the customization that I would be surprised if it wasn't expanded in the near future. I mean, it's really just a matter of enabling more sliders on the existing system. As for the crew thing, I believe it was mentioned in an article that you can, instead of adding an officer to your crew, have them teach a skill to an existing crew member (swapping it with an already-known skill, pokemon-style).
I want to know, will there be the possibility to have several people all work on the same ship? Coordinate together? That would be awesome. Maybe everyone has a restricted role, but the sense of adventure would be unequaled.
And what about massive fleet battles?
Those 2 things would definitively make me want to play this.
can't work on the same ship, everoyne is captain to their own. you can visit the bridge which is just for show and like a player house. no actual ship stuff can go on in there

Damn it, an artbook.
Those bastards know my weakness for concept art. Sure the rest of the stuff is nifty, and I'm sure the in-game gear is fun too (particularly the DS9 uniforms), but damnit I do love concept art.
Somebody call a grown up. My card is about to get touched in a bad place.
Also, was there a price listed for the special edition? I didn't see it listed, but I haven't looked around very much.

That's off the top of my head, i am sure there are others. Either way, far more than zero.
Add Fallen Earth to the list. Though I haven't tried it, just saw it there.
I don't know anyone who uses the WoW in-game voice chat so it might as well not even exist. Everyone uses vent.
I think one could say this in regards to any MMO's voice chat, and it will always be so until one comes along with near-vent quality at inception/launch.
I'm not ashamed to admit it. The TNG uniforms are a significant draw for me to pick up the CE.
I'd rather they have TOS uniforms.
It's just not the same unless my hot Orion science officer is wearing a miniskirt, dammit!
Regarding tactical combat, it does seem to be fairly slow in bigger ships, which is a good thing because there's tons of shit to worry about in a fight (which, itself, is a good thing).
How is the ground combat and away missions? I realize space combat is a huge deal, but planetary exploration is also a huge deal and I would hate to see such a large aspect of the game be neglected because they pour so much time and resources into space.
Guild Wars is an example of an American game with auto-path to enemy mobs enabled. I cut my MMO teeth on that one, so I was surprised when in other games you kept getting a "target not in range" error instead of just running up however close you needed to be automatically.
Aion also has this, but of course that was made in Korea.

EDIT: More MMO's included
I stand corrected.
I think one could say this in regards to any MMO's voice chat, and it will always be so until one comes along with near-vent quality at inception/launch.
I would pay huge money if that happened in the game any time some fucking retard typed any variation of the phrase "I am so High/Drunk/Wasted".
The message they type doesn't go out, just a huge pissed-off hedgehog shows up on their main screen and yells at them to grow the fuck up.
And then it bricks their processor. And permabans them. And establishes a federal law that doesn't let anyone under 21 to play video games.
Jeez, I am totally going to be one of those cantankerous old bastards that's sick of goddamn kids being so stupid. I'm already halfway there.
In other news, I'm really starting to get psyched for this game. Hoping I'm part of the lucky few that gets a beta invite before the open beta.
how so? This is seeming like a purchase for me but Im weary of the combat being, well, not remotely like starfleet command.
but looking at the videos and stuff put out on gaming sites so far, it looks like the ship combat is pretty darn fun.
This made me want to purchase- particularly that combat is slow and tactical in the reports they are getting.
