Anyone have advice on where I should download the correct client? The official cryptic site is downloading slow as shit. At the rate this is going, it will be Friday before I have the correct version of the client.
What? Suicide attacks can make whole fleets explode?
Yes!

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
I've never played PotBS so I don't really get that reference.
Hmm. Let me see if I can do this justice.
Like I said, space combat is done 3 dimensionally, using "W" and "S" to pull your yoke up and down, and "A" and "S" to bank left and right. You are equiped with forward and rear weapons that you can fire only if the enemy is with their firing arc. Generally phasers have wide arcs, where as disruptors and torpedos have smaller ones. Your ships are protect by 4 quadrants of sheilding (front, back, left and right).
Essentially you have to use your W,A,S,D keys to manuever your ship through the battle positioning yourself to destory the sheilding of your opponents so you can start damaging their hull. I have to say "Think of it as dog-fighting, but in space" but that seems to fit. Well, except for the 4 positional sheilds..... and the 4 power systems you manage.... and the skills you and your bridge officers are able to use.... and the consumable that boost your systems.
Theres a video back on page 38 that shows the space combat, since I'm sure I did a horrible job explaining it.
Edit: You can also hold down Left+Right mouse buttons to steer if you don't like using the W,A,S,D keys. I generally use a combination of the two. Mouse to steer, W and S keys to go up and down.
So basically it's an action combat style of combat as far as space battles go. Got it.
Ground is like any MMO, except instead of being in front of the person autoattacking and using skills, you're 30 ft away auto attacking and using skills. Basically imagine an MMO where everyone was a ranged class.
Space is kill shields to get to the Hull. Kill Hull to kill the ship. There are four shields, front/back/left/right, and breaking any of those sheilds lets you damage the hull from that side. You get a certain amount of front and back weapon slots to equip. Each item you equip has different firing arcs. Some shoot only the way they are facing, some shoot 3 directions, some shoot all 4 directions. So the game is to point your ship the correct way to be able to shoot the enemy, destroy a shield, and keep positioning yourself to shoot that open area while they move around trying to hide their current vunerable side from you. All while they do the same to you.
Well if you were in closed, they already released a patch on the launcher than rolls back to a.0
On another note, I present to you the USS JIHAD.
Oh really? I was not in closed, but I was one of the few people who was accidentally given access to the closed beta patcher. I'm currently running whatever version I was able to patch up to yesterday. Perhaps if they did a patch rollback, maybe I can get the rollback tomorrow and not have to mess with getting the 7.5gb 8.a0 files.

game would be more fun if it didn't crash when i beamed off the ship
i just don't see how they are going to launch in 2 weeks, it's so buggy still
I have been playing for 2 weeks and have not crashed once. I have encountered a few bugs in missions but not serious ones.
you're lucky, any time i'm on a away team mission and a lot of stuff starts happening the client crashes, I know the same thing happens to tremor
Are you using an ATI card? Try turning of dynamic lighting.
This pretty much did it for me exactly, for the record, and it doesn't even really affect the visuals. I went from stuttering to rock-solid framerates just by turning off dynamic lighting.
Of course this means they kind of need to un-screw their lighting setup, but!...
holy crap really? I'll have to try that! (I have a 4870)

Sadly, they realized their mistake and I no longer have access to the patcher. It isn't an option. I'm back to getting the message that says I don't have permission to view the launcher.
The NDA is over. REVEAL YOUR SECRETS TO ME!:twisted:
BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY (Then max level in a month and quit a month after that)
I'm really liking the game.
To be honest, STO suffers from a lack of content just like CO does/did. However, the battles are more involved and going from space to ground mixes things up, so it doesn't feel like it as much. Plus, there's greater hope for new content. With Champions, they have to effectively come up with something new, but there's a bazillion different Star Trek locales/characters/etc. that would make for a good mission.

Man I really want to get this. But 10$ extra for a month of rough beta edges?
Hrmf... I was in the Wrath of the Lich King Beta and didn't really enjoy it. There were very few people around, for one, and I didn't like the idea of having to re-do all your progress. And it was very rough, with lots of crashes and poor customer service for things like stuck characters.

Do the escape pods on the hull actually do anything? They seem intentionally obvious on the pictures Pika posted.
Nope, until I read your post just now, JUST NOW I thought they were photon torpedo banks. But now it's like duh why didn't I recognize them right away.
so either I'm retarded (most likely) or I'm blind but where exactly do i find out which version i have installed?
After i double click the launch icon it brings up a login screen (which after logging in I'm told that i don't have access) with a launcher version that is nowhere near the version codes that have been posted here.
I'm joining the open beta, I have time to spare at the moment and want to see if it's worth a proper investment later on (when my time will be more scarce).
Let's hope the Steam preloading thing goes as planned.

You see them launch when the abandon ship order is given.

This is Steam. STEAM you're talking about.
Nothing EVER goes to plan!
Steam & Cryptic. I couldn't even patch CO in the open beta, the patch download speeds were so low that I'd took me like 3 days.

For those that were complaining about the appearance of the armor sets, you can disable them from appearing graphically by right clicking them in the paper doll.

So if your ship blows up do you have to go get another one or do you just respawn and there's an "A" added to the end of your ship's NCC number?

Abandon ship or something like that.

That's going to be very popular.

Or is the PVP more along the lines of WOW, in designated areas and it doesn't really matter for anything?
I'm hearing 10am PST.
Oh it does matter. It matters because it's tons of fun.
Nothing like being a level 80 decked out gnome rouge camping lowbies for fun.
(But seriously, being a Klingon pirate sounds fun. Or a Maquis raider. That sounds awesome.)

I have a bunch of screenshots I'd love to share, but won't until I know that it's okay to do so.
I'm going by the fact the open beta is tomorrow. :P

No, PVP in WoW is boring and pointless.
So, any answer on this?
