Quick question ... when I beam down to a planet with my bridge officers. How the fuck do I get them to just follow me? I can set rally points ... but why isn't she just following me around?
And on a related note ... why could I only choose the profession of my first bridge officer, but not race, gender, appearance and name? Or have I missed something?
Considering they could have gone overboard and done a LCARS styled UI, be thankful for the current implementation. I'm sure there is a group of trek diehards that are lamenting that choice.
I'm really thankful I didn't have to drive my starship with this:

There's a Cardassian tailor (hmmm) at the Sol Stardock who will customize BO appearance.
Played a bit today. It's pretty good from what I experienced. It at least convinced me not to cancel my pre-order, but I'm really interested in where it will go in later levels. It seems like Star Trek Online is the perfect medium for story arcs and I hope that they're both in the game at later levels and far more engaging than the ones in Champions online (and this game, understandably, borrows heavily from CO). I just hope that's something they're either working or plan on working on at a reasonable rate.
Can people please stop calling closed betas open betas? You need a key for this, which you can't get freely. There are some lotteries and stuff, but most require a site membership.
An open beta is open for everyone.
I've seen or heard about at least 3 websites giving away anywhere from one thousand to TEN thousand beta keys, first come first server.
I only got into the third tier of episodes, but they were still pretty fun at that point, with some pretty epic fights and plot stuff even when going solo.
Ok, writing up some of my first impressions. I got to level 5 so far.
1) The tutorials aren't really expansive enough. The give you the basics, but skip over some important stuff.
2) The skills page. I'm glad this is a beta, because I wasted a ton of points because I didn't realize that you could scroll down to more skills. Needs to be more obvious, or I'm just an idiot.
3) Ship combat is a blast.
4) ground combat is ok, but could use some work.
All in all, so far I think i'll definately buy the game. I plan to play a science and engineering officer before beta ends so that I know which one I want to play come live. Also, like I said before, I really hope you can have more than 2 characters come live.

Nope i did this too, i dont think its very obvious because the first 2 teirs fill the screen pretty completely. If they sized down the box a bit and cut a but off one of the bottom skills, it would entice you to scroll down and see more.
Aw man, my aging rig just can't handle this game. Barely handles Champions, but dies within a couple of minutes running STO on minimums. I am a sad panda.
What I saw of the character creator was pretty cool, though :?
Yeah same here, i assume you need to know my name@name to invite me, which i dont know off the top of my head.
Yeah, I was prety confused by this as well. I assume the first name is your character name, and the second is account name, but when you make your character you type in a few different names at different times. I think I'm Dewar@Dewar.

ya it's characters name (at character creation the top left, your main character name, not the first name last name in the biography) @ account name
so for me it would be Character@Hardtarget (which is currently Hardtarget@hardtarget) but their friends system is really cool. Once it's in there no matter what character that account is using they'll always automatically be on your friends list.

So wait, it just broadcasts your account name to everyone you meet? doesnt that break like, 1/2 of a good password system?
No, you have your login name and then your account name. They should be different unless you didn't pay attention when you created it.You can petition to have your account name changed.

there is a big scroll bar?!
maybe it would help if default view was obtained and available on, unavailable off. that would condense the list a lot.
i just can't comprehend not noticing the scroll bar!
