Right, I'm moving to Canada. That place is too cold to be affected by economic downturns, right? I can just gather acorns and barter with the natives and offer them shiny beads.

It'll be like my own little kingdom, complete with French-Canadian butlers!

    We wouldn't really hit zero.

What's hilarious about this is that if the stock market collapsed entirely and the Dow hit 0 points, it wouldn't actually directly affect the finances of any of these companies at first. It just removes one avenue of fund raising.

What I am saying is that we'll be killing pigrats and spore plants for food first and then the Dow will hit 0.

I really can't shake the feeling that a lot of companies are severely undervalued right now, but I can't figure which ones so there's not much point in investing.

Ok I'm kid of an economy newb could someone explain to me how the recession stops?

Like, I get how it starts and I've seen it around me.

ie. My uncle runs a trucking business, the guy that gives him most of his work and tells him no more work for awhile. He asks why and the guy says, "Because the recession is coming." My uncle told him he was just making it worse.

ie. Some politician mentioned health care cuts (IDIOTS), then a nurse at work says, "Shit, well I'm not going to be buying that new widescreen Tv then". Also I'm quickly finding a place that has cheaper rent so that if I do lose my job I can afford my rent with some cooking or labor job.

So this all seems like a never-ending downward cycle that causes money to stop moving and people to stop buying things and so people don't get paid and businesses fail and can't employ people and so those people don't have money to spend and on and on.

How does this process get reversed?

How does this process get reversed?

When people with money start buying shit.

When businesses work through inventory and have to buy more raw materials and produce more goods.

The issue is right now there is little not being effected negatively by the recession. No recession proof industries means nobody with money is going to risk it on things that are unsure. Eventually people will see a bottom to the market and start investing back into things, which will drive demand, get employment back, and the upswing takes effect. The difficult thing is to predict the bottom and keep the overprotective worry warts from being too alarmist.
