more models really do need to have an option to order them with 2 gigs of RAM

I mean I can do it myself but that would be much easier

They'd also way overcharge you, considering how retardedly easy it is to upgrade the RAM in the Mini.

You take out two screws, push outward on the little clasps holding the RAM in place. It'll start to pop up at an angle. Wiggle it free, put in the new stick of RAM, close it all back up, and you're done.

It took a whole 5 minutes from when my RAM arrived to get it installed, and it was only $25 (probably cheaper, at this point)

i like the idea of tiny notebooks but i've been hearing battery life figures like two hours

    that's craaaaap

it's got a smaller screen and less power, the battery is smaller too but it should scale

my macbook still gets over 3 and a half hours with wifi on and the battery is 20 months old

I'm averaging 3-4 on mine, probably less if I turned down the screen's brightness on a regular basis.

I have tiny doll hands, so the smaller keyboard doesn't bother me as much, and I got used to the odd placement of the apostrophe key pretty quickly. The smaller Shift keys do still suck.

I was considering the following guide: http://www.drakefire.com/?p=171 in my attempt to finally unchain myself from my current dual boot system, by making a dedicated, small but function #!Crunchbang Linux desktop for when I need to write & make sites without lolcats distracting me with their funny & trite stories of pawing yarn & cheezebergers.

interseting..by getting a higher speed rating does it have less latency when run at slower speeds?

I actually found a couple of forum threads on the official dell forums where dudes tested to find the lowest latency ram in a 2gb setup, turns out it was some mushkin brand available here.

Ill be getting it in 3-7 days!

the RAM I have is DDR3

I am not sure what that means exactly

triple channel ram, meaning that it can run three requests at the same time or one request three times as fast as DDR. To utilize it you need three slots of the same speed, so either a 3 or 6 or 12 gb setup

The mini laptops are so frickin' cute

But then I realise I'd want to actually work and run fairly intensive programs on them

But they're so cute and light and portable and great for taking notes

The eee pcs say they can get up to 6-8 hours of battery life. I think it ends up being around 5-ish. I guess it depends on the model though. My girlfriend has the 10" one which has a lot of the features a normal laptop would have.

I'm considering turning it into a Hackintosh, but I need to get a USB DVD drive.

I think the 1000H has the newer Intel processor, where as the 1000 has the old one. I could be wrong about that though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that Hackintosh article says you need a 16gig SSD and the $200 one is just 4gigs. Getting the 16gig drive adds $75 to the price.

I just watched a comparison video of the 1000 and the 1000H and the latter is definitely the faster of the two. Which is a little disappointing as I was pulling for the SSD.

Well, I've not had any problems with my 1000H. The bigger hard drive really is a plus. I've got a lot of lossless music on this thing.
