For future reference, the swap file is physical drive space used if your RAM is exceeded. It's slower than RAM, though, so if you have at least 2 gigs, you'd just assume not use one. It can be used for Linux hibernation where the RAM state is dumped to disk so next time your computer boots, it can reload it immediately from where it left off, but hibernation is kinda screwy and not entirely useful with fast booting Netbook OSes. A swap shouldn't really be more than maybe double your RAM, and for hibernation just needs to be as large as your RAM plus a little head room.

Linux can read NTFS partitions, so if you really need to share stuff, you should be able to read and write your main XP partition for data sharing.

quick, someone make an se++ app

open a terminal and type in

    prism

then fill in the stuff for SE++'s URL

    Bam there's your forum app.

the tricky part would be finding a high quality image for the icon

    ok I did that part
how do I get it to be on my list of apps instead of in the desktop

    First Make a Prism App:
    • From the Home Launcher, click Accessories then click Terminal.
    • Type at the command line, “prism“.
    • Enter URL (as in http://www.anynewsite.com/).
    • Enter a Display Name you want.
    • Check any Options you want, this adds extra browser items to the window.
    • You MUST check Desktop Shortcut so it will create the command we want to use next.
    • Change the ICON if you have another one to use, otherwise the website icon will be retrieved.
    • Click OK and you should see it run, see if it did go to where you wanted it to. Close it.
    • Close Terminal window, Control-D will work or click the eXit tab.

    Add it to the Menu:
    • From Home Launcher, on the right side click Desktop, this is where Prism put your webapp launcher.
    • Right click your new desktop webapp icon, and select Properties.
    • Grab all the text in the Command area by clicking in the box, type Control-A, then Control-C.
    • Close the Properties window and exit the Desktop file browser.
    • From the Home Launcher, left side click Preferences, then find and click Main Menu.
    • From the left side, choose which menu you want to insert this website application into.
    • From the right side click New Item.
    • Type in the Name to display on your Main Menu.
    • Put the command code into the Command field by typing Control-V, then click OK.
    • Close the Main Menu program.

Also while in the Properties window you can click the little 'platform with a spring' and pick out a new icon, preferably a .svg (you can just rename a .png to .svg and it'll work fine)

There's a way to include extensions, I just don't recall what it is right now.

Hey, does anyone know if netbooks would be able to run Quicken? We've been thinking about getting a little laptop just for portable internets and it would be cool to have Quicken on it as well, to be able to take it on trips and stuff, to be able to keep up with finances.

Netbooks generally don't have CD drives, right? But I'm sure they have USB ports, right?

D'you think I could copy the Quicken install disk to a sufficiently large thumbdrive and then install it on a Netbook?

We pretty much only want a laptop or netbook for intenets and quicken, so it'd be silly to get an expensive laptop for that.

Looking at the specs, it totally could. You could probably ISO the CD and install it from a thumbdrive, yes.

Reasonably difficult. I fucked it up the first time and had to start over, overall I think I probably spent about 8 hours getting it working. That guide Gizmodo posted at some point is out of date and caused my initial failure, but once I found a more recent one from the mydellmini forums, it was (mostly) smooth sailing. The majority of the time was spent waiting for installation/OS updates to finish.

man why is this thread still open

is it so old that it's like a historic building and the mods feel guilty about tearing it down?

also I think it's funny that two of the most popular jolicloud apps are gmail and google docs, when you can:

    A) Just have them in a browser
    B) Have one of those and click a link in the corner of the screen to go to the other

But the whole 'philosophy' behind things like Prism and Chrome's Single Site Browser thing is that they're treated just like normal applications, they don't have to exist in your browser, you can treat'em like individual apps. And using Google Gears, they remain functional offline, just like a mail app or a document app.

yeah but it might be pretty slow (it *does* use your video card), and you're going to have to make numpad considerations.

A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.

I would assume so. Though i have no idea what the CPU power of netbooks are, so not sure.
