oh please please please don't link to 'At the Movies.'

Ben lyons is the worst movie critic on the face of the earth. This is the guy who called I Am Legend "one of the greatest movies ever made."

    Zero artistic credibility.

Yea I really hate those guys. I liked Richard Roeper's reviews when he was running it though, and still drift towards that page for some weird reason.

Just check the movie's Rotten Tomatoes page. The tomatometer is going down at a consistent rate. It was around 89% last week. I guess it's really as polarising as some had claimed.

To Fatboy Roberts: I enjoyed your well-written review. Something you said in there confirmed to me, however, that I am going to love this. The Chris Columbus comparison. Of course, when I think Chris Columbus, I'm thinking of the first two Harry Potter films. While there were many people who didn't enjoy them because they were too similar to the books and therefore felt they didn't have a soul of their own, I was absolutely fine with this (and wasn't really feeling the "no soul" bit). I just look at it as more translation than adaptation. I enjoy the third and fourth films more, but there are many plot points missing from those. In fact, in the fourth and fifth films, things are referenced that had only been in the books to that point, so if someone was simply following along with the movies, they'd certainly be at least a bit confused. There is so much to Watchmen that I feel the "Chris Columbus" approach of laying out all the plot points you can was probably the best one to take.

I mean, seriously, even a more by-the-books translation of Watchmen rather than a stylistic adaptation would still be better than most of the stuff out there.

I'm gonna see this movie tomorrow maybe, though I'm having a pretty hard time trying to get people to come with. They seem to think it's dumb because it's got "Batman in it". They mean Nite Owl, despite how many times I've corrected them :(

All lined up for Saturday...I've got a mix of people in the group. About half have read the novel and half haven't, so the response should be interesting.

This is confusing. Even if it did have Batman in it, wouldn't that be a plus to people who aren't particular fans of Watchmen? I mean Batman! C'mon!

That's exactly why I read negative reviews. Actually, I usually only read like 3 or 4 reviews tops, and one of em is usually a neg review. I check Berardinelli, Ebert, Jack Mathews if I can, Elvis Mitchell if I can. It's hardly ever that all 4 of em line up on a single movie, and it's the negative review that often helps me decide if I'm gonna see it or not. Not because I'm all contrarian or some shit, but because I find once I read a couple reviewers well enough, I get a good idea what their tastes are, and if they pan something, it might be that their reasoning for disliking something will be the exact reason why I WOULD like it.
The wife still needs to read the comic

I'd say don't. At this point, it might be a better moviegoing experience if she goes in cold, and reads the book afterwards. I've talked to a few people who read the book as little as a week before seeing this movie, and all it did is train them to look for the stuff that wasn't there. It seems to lead almost solely to "checklist" viewing because the book is too fresh and too dense to do anything but trip over omitted things when the movie is playing.

I'm gathering from reviews that enjoyment of the movie often hinges on knowledge of the comic. Positive reviews praise it being a "relatively faithful translation" while negative reviews focus on how it's muddled, too long, or doesn't stand at all on its own.

To me, this indicates that the geeks and fans will generally appreciate it while the general moviegoer will be confused and frustrated. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I don't think that having knowledge of the source material necessarily means you're gonna like the movie. I've been keeping track of all the reviews posted on Rotten Tomatoes, and from my own observation I'd say fans of the book are divided while most of the non-fans dislike the film.

I'm going with 2 people on Friday to IMAX. Others were going to come but they didn't get tickets in time / couldn't go, because it was a 2PM show. I am glad the others are not going. The two people I am going with read and enjoyed the book (though one of them was dumb and listened to my other other friend and so skipped over the text parts in the book, so eventually I'm making him go back and reread it all). The other people who would have come didn't read the book so boo, whatever them.

    James Berardinelli's review is up.

tl;dr - If you've read and liked the comic, you'll like/love the movie. If you haven't, you'll feel like its hollow and emotionless but looks pretty.

Here is a very good article that outlines the problem which most reviewers are having with the movie.

It doesn't persuade my enthusiasm in the least, as I am basically looking forward to seeing a motion version of the comic on the big screen. But I do agree that most of the mainstream movie going populace will find it hard to relate to the feeling of paranoia which the Cold War brought nearly two decades later.

It was all just a bit of silliness in the end, really.

No, the coupon is good from the premier until the 20th of March. You don't send away for the tickets, you just print out the coupon after inputting your code into the website and you present the printout at the theater.
