[Manipulate On] Dawn of Woe 2 - We have heard the call to war.

DAWN OF [strike]WAR[/strike] WOE 2
The orks are gone and we are inside. We will see your vision fulfilled.

eldarautarchsmaller.jpg

Dawn of War 2 is the newest RTS set in the grimdark future of the 41st millennium by Relic. Described as taking the best parts of the original DoW combined with Company of Heroes, this game places an emphasis on quick action over memorizing build orders and perfecting your pixel clicking. And by that I mean that there is no base building.

The game has two distinct portions, with the single player campaign being a completely different beastie from the multiplayer. The single player campaign is for the SM only (though campaigns for other races seems like an obvious DLC money maker *hint hint*). It's a persistent rpg like squad based tactical game with emphasis on building up and using a handfull of squads for the whole campaign. For more information you can see this link, beware the minor spoilers.

In the multiplayer portion of the game you can choose from Eldar, Orks, Space Marines, and Tyranids. As time allows I or someone else will provide individual write ups on the various races, but for right now just remember that all you need to do in order to win as Eldar is to mass banshees. Unless you are on my team, then you should try something else.

Factions:

The Eldar
farseersmall.jpg
You could not believe the things we have seen with our eyes.

We are the oldest and the wisest of this galaxy's inhabitants. We suffer still from the mistakes of our past and struggle daily, but we have time and again proven ourselves the most worthy. Tasked with defending the Webway, we perfect our art over long millennia and our craftworlds are home to the most powerful psychics known to us. We remain fast and mobile and few survive once our plans are in motion.

The Orks
kommandonobsmall.jpg
(They have yet to utter anything intelligent enough to be worth remembering.)

The orks spread across the galaxy like a cancer. Once their presence has been felt upon a world, it will forever be plagued by their kind. They are large, brutish, unskilled in all manner of warfare, and easily manipulated. Their stupidity is matched only by their number.

The Space Marines
bloodravensmall.jpg
And they shall know no fear.

Clinging to their ignorance and their Emperor's false divinity to their last breath, the mon-keigh are loud and easily driven to anger. Ever convinced of the righteousness of their actions, they are often difficult to deal with in any civil manner, but their brashness makes them blind to our machinations. They fight in small groups, relying on their large armored suits to keep them safe as they lumber across the battlefield like the rocks they are so fond of eating.

The Tyranids
tyranidz.jpg
(An ork drew this, Farseer. I did not know they were capable of the thought required.)

The tyranids are one of the greatest threats we have faced. A single hive fleet, known as Kraken, nearly destroyed Craftworld Iyanden. Their numbers are endless and death means nothing to the tyranid hive fleets. One killed tyranid creature is merely more biomass to reclaim when the world is devoured. Their reliance on large psychic creatures to imbue their number with some semblence of intelligence is their greatest weakness and one easily exploited.

Multiplayer

MP is handled via GFWL, there is a partial list of people's gamer tags below but the best way to meet up with people is via the G&T vent server. Check the sticky in this forum for the server info and how to donate for it's upkeep. Trust me when I say that the game is a LOT better when playing with/against fellow PA folks. 3v3 matched games when your team mates are pubbies might just be a special plane of hell.

Here is a partial list of GFWL IDs copied from the last OP.

Got something you think should be in this OP? Write it up and I'll add it.

I can scarcely read it, Farseer, but an ork seems to have crudely written something here. He speaks of a Captain K and threatens to "crump" us. I am sorry, it appears to be unintelligible.

Oh hey, thought -- DOW2's engine would be fucking PERFECT for Necromunda.

Edit: No, seriously. It wouldn't be THAT much to change it. You already have the territory control system, sorta. Online play would require some minor tweaks, like server-side saved gangs and a points system, but really, online Necromunda? It would rock!

The Relic guys hiding in this thread should totally be pitching this idea to their overlords. The return on investment would be extremely high, you really wouldn't have to do much to implement this kinda thing (it's essentially a big mod) and you would be able to resell the game as another game.

THIS. THIS SO MUCH PLEASE. D:

I've thought the exact same thing a number of times as I've been going through. Necromunda was such a sweet game, and this engine really is well suited for it stylistically.

So thought ye olde hidden Relic posters... you can do the gang war thing but do it on a different Hive World, so that you wouldn't have to touch the sticky GW Backstory. :) Just as long as you fill it with interesting houses (bonus points if you let us pick what one we wanna do the campaign as)...

We'd love to do Necromunda, and Battlefleet Gothic, and Dark Heresy, and Apocalypse, and....but we've got more than enough work lined up for the next few years extending DoW II.

But thanks to Warhammer Online and the Dawn of War series, GW properties are getting huge mainstream exposure, making it more likely (in my opinion) that other GW properties are explored by a host of studios in the future, even if it's not Relic.

This. Don't get me wrong, I love Necromunda and Epic 40k (and Dark Heresy, if you ever wanted to make a Baldurs Gate-esque game from it *hint hint*) but BFG is just so awesome, and it deserves some mainstream recognition... and a sweet game to go with it.

but yes it's true there is a whole lot of GW stuff coming out and honestly I think it's great that these games are finally coming to a format people (ie me) can afford. I mean lets be serious 40k is cool and all but very few people have the time and money needed to actually play it.

Even if I were to admit that, Sins of a Solar Empire isn't a sweet spaceship game set in 40k with 40k ships.

Hell, you could do what GW does for some of it's campaigns (and what that Star Wars game did, but better) and connect the BFG game with planetary battles. You know, so when my Planet Killer turns a planet into so much star dust and kindling, I can know that not only did billions die for the glory of the Chaos Gods, but it means something positive for me in game terms too.

Or, if you wanted to make a truly epic game, you could somehow combine BFG, Epic 40k and Necromunda style games into one. Ancient ships of Chaos battle the huge war fleets of the Imperiums Navy as the swift ships of the Eldar deal death from the veil of shadows, and lumbering Ork Hulks blast everything to bits with brutal but tempermental firepower, while down on the worlds of the Emperor God-Machines deal death on a massive scales as legions of superheavy tanks and staggering amounts of troops and artillery are released to deal death in an awe inspiring scale, while in the nearby hive worlds brutal gangs fight to the death in a contest to win the right to see the stars, fuelled by the taint of Chaos and the machinations of the Eldar, unaware of the massive battles occurring above them, both on the worlds surface and in the skies they yearn to gaze upon.

I'll admit I was being extravagant with my Nurgle hate in the other thread. Nurgle and his hideous blessed putrid children can be very disgusting fun.

Ok in all seriousness, I don't like Nurgle as much as I like the other Chaos Gods (even Khorne) I'd like to see Slaaneshi Chaos Rines, failing that I'd prefer Tzeentchian marines, but if all else fails, I'd still rather see Death Guard before more Khornies. No offense to the God of All Hate and Rage, but much as I love collecting Skulls for the Skull Throne and shedding Blood for the Blood God, I'd rather do something Just as Planned, or show my foes the perfection of their deaths... or even spread love in the form of a hideously disfiguring plague or too. No hard feelings Khorne... I just think we should see other people.

    Wait.

What were we talking about again?

Oh right. Chaos Faction. Yea, I'd like Slaanesh, but anyone is better than more Khorne. Hell, UNDIVIDED might be nice.

Great OP. (although this is going to lead to someone doing a Tyranid OP next OMNOMNOM)

So who would pay for DLC for campaigns for the other races if it was available? I would.

This may have already been discussed I don't know. Forgive me if so.

Also in mentioning that people are glad the games are out because they can't play TT for one reason or another. I used to play TT long ago (2nd edition), and thought about getting into it again when I played the first DoW.

Then I went down to the local games shop and saw the other people playing and knew I couldn't deal with that.
