Gaming on an old 1080i any good?

EliteLamerEliteLamer __BANNED USERS regular
Hey, my roommates have an older 1080i downstairs that is 61inch that has component cables. I was curious if games would look decent on this TV and if they do what type of mouse, keybored and chair set up would work best in a family room?

I presume this is a projection TV? I think you might be best off with a sofa, a coffee table, and a decent wireless keyboard and mouse. I use one of these in the living room and it's quite nice.

Yes, assuming your computer is able to step up to the high-def resolutions. I have had tons of bad luck so far on wireless setups, and have stuck to USB extension cords. This is NOT ideal, but I'm just saying I would wait and see if any particular model gets multiple endorsements on fast-moving FPS games before spending any real money.

Ensure all your cables are firmly plugged in. Also, how are you hooking up to your computer again?

You can get funny colors if your HD cables are flipped around.
Because unlike composite there are three video cables, instead of one. So if you mix some up, instead of not working at all sometimes you get some weird colors.

I checked the cables and they are not mixed around.

Do you have anything else to test with besides your computer? PS3, Wii, 360, DTV, etc.? If multiple sources aren't working then apparently something is wrong with your TV. If it's just your computer we'll need to know what video card you're using.

I have a dvd player and Wii hooked up. Everything plays fine. The Dvds look greated hooked up with component cables. Also, my old pc hooked up to the TV through composite runs fine.

Comp cables through my new PC everything is too pink. I have a 9800 GTX+...

I know this tv is not PC ready but the software with the video card lets it be hooked up to an HD TV..

Does the TV have a VGA port? I'd try that honestly. Or, even better, DVI.

I'm assuming you're not plugging a component interface to the computer. What is the computer-end of the cable? S-Video? You're right that with that video card this shouldn't be an issue.

There are a few different ways of sending a component signal. Your TV isn't properly decoding what the PC is spitting out. See if you can change the encoding in the PC drivers.

Not really sure how to change the drivers.

I would go to two different places. First, right click your desktop, click properties, click the settings tab, go to advanced, and somewhere in there you should be able to get to your driver settings. Look for anything relevant. Your video card may have also included software to handle some of this stuff...if you installed that software, go look at that.

If I recall, the PS3 can't do 1080i so if the TV can only do that resolution it won't work.

Is the computer putting out interlaced or progressive signals? RGB or YCrCb? Is it using sync on green or some other synced signal type?

There's a lot more to these matters that just plugging cables in, unfortunately.

ZackShilling is right on the money. And lowlylowlycook is wrong about PS3, it supports all resolutions. The issue with the ps3 is that it doesn't do any scaling on its own, so it is up to the game to support 1080i.

It is RGP cables and does not have progressive scan.
