Mario Sunshine came out 10 and 9 months after the Cube launch in Japan and America. A while, but not a year and a half.
Yeah, I kinda tripped over it when I said it. Oversight on my part.
And Krunch, I can't believe you put that last part in.

Anyway, the podcast was entertaining. About the Gamecube, I thought it was pretty surprising how it performed last gen, especially how quickly opinions changed about it where I live. Specifically the people around my age.
Be warned! Wall of text coming up.
Also keep in my the follwing is what happened where I live. Your "Doomed Gamecube" story may vary.
I remember that in school (I was in 7th grade if that helps), a lot of the kids were talkiing about the Gamecube before it launched, yet there was no love for the Xbox. Once both Gamecube and Xbox launched people were buying Gamecubes left and right. Back in Christmas 2001, if you bought a next-gen system, you either had a PS2 or a Gamecube. I remember the Nintendo fanboys in my school feeling giddy that Nintendo had the possibility to win the console war.
Unfortunately, things started to fall downhill almost immediately. After Smash Bros released in December, the first big drought happened. First blow right there. Okay droughts happen. No big deal.
Blow number two: Wind Waker's art style. Now, there are a lot of Zelda fans in my area. From "Hardcore" to "Casual" to even the non-gamers Zelda is a incredibly popular franchise. People thought that the next Zelda was going to be a darker more "realistic game" than OoT or MM. Once word got out about Wind Waker's art style, people were completely turned off. That was around the time I first heard the phrase "Kidtendo". Ironically it was said by a 14 year old.
Blow number three: Mario Sunshine. "Clean is better than dirty, and dirty's meaner than clean!" Need I say more? "Kidtendo" is drilled into the minds of people even further. Honestly, you wouldn't believe how many times I heard the words "Gay" and "Nintendo" in the same sentence at the time.
Blow Number Four: Halo. Actually, Halo multiplayer to be exact. Now, when this happened, Halo had been out for a year. This was one of the most successful word-of-mouth promotions ever. Only a handful of people had Xboxes. (Mainly because of a school fundraiser, that my parents didn't help me with, even though they said they would :x ) Some of those who had Xboxes had this game called "Halo". It immediately became the Xbox's Goldeneye. It made the Xbox the party console, something that Nintendo had the advantage of the previous generation. By the end of 2002, nearly everyone had an Xbox, the Gamecube owners were nearly nonexistent.
tl;dr The Gamecube had massive potential here and was doing well, but unfortunately, not only did it's first drought crippled it's chances of being a huge competitor to Sony, many were put off by the style of Nintendo's upcoming games. Halo laid the final nail in the coffin.
Anyway, I spent too much time on this post. I am going to bed now. Hopefully I'll wake up early enough to get a Wii somewhere tomorrow.
So how do you guys like retrospectives in general? Good idea, bad idea, would you rather see us talk about something else with regard to the system?
It was excellent. You had mentioned about how the nintendo board had overruled Yamauchi about the Gamecube in a thread before, but you went into extra detail, and probably not a lot of people know about that (in fact, where the fuck did you read about it).

I like a source for that too.
Two things:
a) What's with the bonus track right at the end.
b) MAD PROPS FOR THE NEW TETRIS SOUNDTRACK!
Mario Sunshine is one rad fucking game. The game is just entirely underrated! The tropical environment is solid, the gameplay is solid, and the soundtrack is solid.

The only one of those reasons that isn't stupid is the game drought.
Many were put off by the style of Nintendo's upcoming games? Man, I thought those people were in the minority. I can think of three people who denied the artistic merit of The Wind Waker, and those three people are philistines. The Wind Waker is beautiful and the art style completely captures the emotion of the series and you are goddamn retarded if you think different and I don't care about opinions or any of that bullshit because if you think The Wind Waker is "kiddy" you are a goddamn retard
The big reason that made the cube fail, was that it was released too late. The PS2 had a year against only the Dreamcast, and, by the time the cube launched, it was all decided.
I've never seen anyone who doesn't like Windwaker art style, who isn't a fucking idiot.
Never.
I remember back when it came out I was having so much fun with it and kept telling this kid in my class to get it. He kept on sounding like he was so afraid of the new style, "I wanna get it, becasue it's Zelda, but it's so... kiddy." Then a few months later Starfox Adventures came out and he's talking it up to me like its the best thing ever.
I finally played through it about a year ago.
You have some lame Land Before Time reject dinosaur sidekick and all the other characters are dinosaurs with terrible accents. Apparently that's totally not teh kiddy.
I've come to the conclusion that he's a total idiot.
Great podcast guys. Your "what I'm playing" segment is even better than 1up Yours since you all describe how the games play. Sure, I'll never play Total War whatever, but you found a way to make it interesting. Same with Deacon and Madden Wii.
I thought the EA and Gamecube discussions were very good as well. Diverging viewpoints, but it never turned into a shouting match.
A few small notes:
DS in a dry spell? Yoshi Island, FF3, EBA, and you still want more? I'll be picking up Kirby in a couple days. You should too.
Deacon teasing Imran about finishing Zelda too quickly was funny.
So was Lightreaper declaring that he had no idea the rules of American football.

It's definitely improving week by week. One of the things you could improve on would be the intro, that would go a long way to making it sound more professional.
My thoughts:
-Chop the intro music down in length, it always seems to go too long. I want to get right into listening to the podcast. And it always seems random and chucked on (unless I'm missing something) perhaps put in something that's relevant to a game you guys will discuss that week.
-State the date (or the episode #)
- Do a proper set of introductions. I don't see why you guys seem reluctant to do this. You might know who you are, and I might know who you are. But it still helps new listeners (you do want them right?) and it adds to a sense of familiarity, which is a good thing with something like this.
These are pretty straightforward things that I've found in pretty much every podcast I listen to. It would really add another layer of polish to the podcast IMHO.
Also, It still seems at times that conversation can get bogged down a little or sometimes you guys can ramble unnecesarily. Don't be afraid to just move on. It's a lot better than before, but I still think it need a little more work.
Either you guys have nailed the length or it's just got better overall because I haven't noticed it being too long the last few episodes as I did the first couple.
I'm enjoying the podcast guys, it just needs a little more polish and it'll be tops. Keep up the good work. :^:

I didn't own either, so I can't really comment. I only have a few GC games for my Wii- I don't know about any of the "hidden gems".
