The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
My cousin just recently asked me for advice in finding good metal bands that aren't screamo (Lamb of God, Hatebreed, etc.) Can anyone point me in the right direction? So far, I've pointed her towards Metallica, Anthrax and Iron Maiden.
It is your duty as a filmgoer to see Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.
The way I believe everyone else understood it is that he was asking for bands that weren't screamo, offered those examples and I think people read it as him saying those were examples of screamo/what he's not looking for.
Because then he says the bands he's already mentioned, and neither Hatebreed or LoG are listed. If he considered HB and LoG to be bands he didn't consider screamo, then he likely would have already recommended those.
I just think it's a little telling that three people responded to the thread by (mistakenly) bitching the guy out about genre definitions instead of providing him with recommendations.
So why are you bitching at those people instead of trying to help?
Because I decided to PM the guy some recommendations -- I've learned from dozens of H/A music threads that you should never talk about bands you like on H/A.
Heres some bands I've heard recently that might fit your criteria;
Elvenking
Chrome Division
I had more when I was scrolling down, but I broke my hand on the weekend and just got a cast put on it today, and it takes me a while to type with one hand. Not to mention frustrating.

Blind Guardian
Devin Townsend
Finntroll
Indricothere
Mastodon
Megadeth
Opeth
Pantera
Rob Zombie
Slayer
Symphony X
Tool
Those are the more accessible things that I can think of, with any luck they're suitable. None of them with even a hint of screaming emos.
Have a two-hour discussion with her about asinine genre distinctions, correct her several times as she tries to follow your methodology, and effectively deflate her interest in the whole damn thing. :P
Hair/power metal:
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Iron Maiden
Dragonforce
X-Japan
Versailles
Metalcore:
Unearth
All That Remains
The Human Abstract (with tinges of classical)
Shai Hulud (hardcore/punk with metal influence)
Thrash/heavy:
Metallica (obvious)
Opeth (progressive metal, newer stuff has much more clean vocals and classical song structures)
Mastodon
Arsis
At the Gates
Children of Bodom (metal + keyboards)
In Flames (Anything pre-2004)
Doom/Gothenburg:
Dark Tranquility
Novembre
Darkest Hour (skirts metalcore and gothenburg)
Katatonia
Extras worth checking out:
Amon Amarth (great Viking metal...literally, metal about vikings)
Between the Buried and Me (metalcore/hardcore/progressive with crazy time changes etc)
Glass Casket (same style as above)
screamo isn't bands like thursday and the used, but rather more like hot cross, circle takes the square, blood brothers, and jr ewing. It has been bastardized just like every other genre term.
op, might want to look into the classics, maiden, priest, motorhead, megadeth, or maybe stoner metal like the sword and baroness. If you aren't a fan of screaming, it's probably pretty doubtful you'd be into stuff like amon amarth and necrophagist

Sorry about the the definition issue. The part in bold was practically a direct quote. I just figured someone here would know better than me. (Appears to be quite true)

It is your duty as a filmgoer to see Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.
Notice how the singer's voice doesn't sound like he's being raped with barbed wire.
Uh, after that little rant.... Is your cousin against screams, metalcore vocals, growls (I don't think these need explaining :P) or grunts. Having a clearer idea of what he likes would help.
In the meantime, he should check out the normal metal "gateway" bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Death, Iron Maiden, Sepultura, Pantera, Mastodon and Opeth.
If you want to impress someone just getting to know metal, I would recommend the more famous bands' most accessible and impressive albums.
For traditional (Heavy/Power/NWOBHM/Speed):
Motorhead's Bomber and Overkill - gritty, filthy, fun
Venom's Welcome to Hell and Black Metal - see above, add satanic overtones
Dio's Holy Diver and The Last in Line - the italian midget with the voice of a titan
Rainbow's Stargazer and Long Live Rock n Roll - an old school assault with Dio's powerful vocals and Blackmore's masterful riffs
Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith - these albums are the highlight of Priest's 80's period, with a full production and a more accessible 80's hard rock influence, Halford's wind pipes will ruin your shit.
Flower Travellin Band's Satori - a more obscure rec to show that metal can be psychedelic and entrancing, not just fast and fun. This Japanese band takes a heavy influence from Sabbath but their sound is completely crazy and unique. You will be hooked from the second you here the first GAAAAA ! shout.
For Doom:
Everything Black Sabbath should be mandatory at least up to and including the Dio years.
Sleep's Holy Mountain - an excellent album to familiarize with the kind of metal produced by a combination of Doom metal's slow pounding riffs and stoner rock's laid back foggy atmosphere.
Trouble's Psalm 9 - Trouble shows how you can still make epic riffs even if your themes are anything but supportive of the esoteric. A classic.
Pagan Altar's Volume 1 - this release will be the ultimate archaic experience, the riffage is almost spiritual.
For Thrash:
Don't ignore the other big two, early Megadeth and Slayer are a great stepping stone for more aggressive thrash. Overkill has probably become one of the hardest working bands in the entire metal scene, their first 5 albums (and debut EP) are all classic thrash with accessible melodies and clear production. Easily as epic as any other legendary band. Perhaps the best consecutive record out of any other metal band. Testament and Exodus also play thrash in the same style, clean and heavy. Their early releases should be checked out. I lose appeal for melodic/early thrash at this point, so I have no say in recommending specific albums here.
Most of this is standard entry level stuff, so chances are you'll get good results. I could continue and add some Death/Black/Thrash recs if you're interested.

She might dig Pantera as well.
Maybe even Skinny Puppy.
It's actually the Metal thread.
Because he said, "I want to find good metal bands that aren't screamo", then listed those two as examples.
I mean, geez.
And Hatebreed and Lamb of God certainly do not fall under that definition.
No one (including the OP) said they did.
Because then he says the bands he's already mentioned, and neither Hatebreed or LoG are listed. If he considered HB and LoG to be bands he didn't consider screamo, then he likely would have already recommended those.
And it's hard to recommend anything when you don't fully understand what they're looking for, much less have the same definitions of genres.

screamo
i think the bands you're thinking of are metalcore, which is kind of like the gay younger brother of metal
that being said

Not completely necessarily. It'll just narrow your options quite a bit.
You will end up missing out on a lot of great metal.
Avoiding screamo isn't really the same thing as avoiding screaming.
Angel Witch
Saxon
Megadeth
all wicked without grunts
Throw on The Great Southern Trendkill.
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Iron Maiden
Dragonforce
X-Japan
Versailles

Scrutinized
The Final Chapter (Live)
Eraser (Live)
damn fine metal right there
I strongly suggest you give growl/screaming a good try otherwise you really hamstring yourself
So, yeah Acid Bath. It's good stuff.

ftw.

Also, for the rest of you, metalcore is not screamo either.
Screamo:
If you're music doesn't sound like this, it's not screamo.
Metalcore:
