Hey guys, after a back to back marathon of Braveheart, Gladiator, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, and A Knight's tale, I'm feeling the need to divide and conquer...people...with a sword.
I've got Xbox360, PS2, Wii, and a pretty bitchen computer, but I'm open to games from just about any system. I've played all the Legend of Zeldas, Assassin's creed...and I think that's about it for melee oriented games. I tried out Blade of the...uh..grinding...I didn't like it. Also, Assassin's Creed was fun, but the melee didn't feel fully fleshed out. I could pretty much button mash and win.
I think Windwaker was probably the best combat I've played so far. Anyway, please bless me with your suggestions.

Mount & Blade! Awesome combat mixed with fun army building. Should satisfy any lust for riding in on horseback, slashing away at hordes of footsoldiers left and right as arrows rain down about you.
Way of the Samurai (I have it coming via goozex! YAY!)
Bushido Blade (Psone but you have a PS2 so it should be fine)
Condemned (360 No swords but it has insanely good melee action, first-person too)
Oblivion (Kinda obvious)
Mount and Blade huh? Sounds like fun: I'll definitely give it a try. I never played God of War, but my friends rave about it. I did play the first Ninja Gaiden...and I wasn't a fan.
Melee games are really hard to describe objectively: Zelda games always feel solid to me, Ninja Gaiden felt...too loose. Lemme give another example; in Windwaker especially, I could pretty much melee my way through a single guy (or lets face it, the entire game, it wasn't that hard), but I could also fight 5 or more with Finesse: blocking at the right time, timed reactive moves, switching targets mid combo, those were all good things. Oblivion on the other hand, well, I didn't get the same feel. It could have been the first person, but the fact that I could swing my sword and still move like I wasn't made it feel very loose.
Bushido blade (the original, not the sequel) was probably the best example of all. Of course doing nothing but duels eventually gets boring.

Yeah, you're definitely going to love Mount and Blade. If nothing else, download the demo.

Mount & Blade totally. Nothing is more satisfying then hear the squish sound your sword makes when you cut open some dude's chest.

A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
What suggestions are there for someone who's more into console gaming, and likes his combat more...Over-the-top? Less realistic medieval combat, more swords the size of people cleaving things in half and battles that either amount to tearing through dozens or hundreds of weaklings quickly, or serious duels where it's all parries and dodges until some stuff gets in?

Devil May Cry 1 and 3 are a personal favourite. They might appeal.
If you are JUST looking to slash people to bits, might I suggest Conan the Barbarian (the latest console version, not the MMO)? It's a terrible game, but the sword combat is incredibly satisfying. Rent it, if you can, rather than buying it.

If you can find it and don't mind an older game, Rune was a pretty fun PC game based completely around Melee combat. You basically play as a Viking and hack your way through a cool Norse setting. The multiplayer especially was grand, although you probably won't find many people to play with these days.
When I feel the need to disembowel someone with a sword, I can't help but bust out Ninja Gaiden... any iteration... I'll go all the way back to the Genesis and just scuttle about the boards hacking off limbs like i'm getting salary for it.

Samurai Western.
Not only is there killing dozens of cowboys with parrying bullets and gallons of blood everywhere, but you can deck out the main character in anything from rabbit ears to samurai gear to a locomotive engine.
I'd second any of the suggestions for Drakengard, Dynasty Warriors/Warriors Orochi, myself. As far as Dynasty Warriors goes, 3 and 5 are probably the best ones for PS2, and Dynasty Warriors 6 is also on PS2, but came out for 360/PS3 first. I can't vouch for the PS2 version, but the PS3 version of 6 was great fun for me.
Warriors Orochi 1 and 2 are both wonderful as well. And there's enough characters that you'll find at least some that you'll like, as was stated already.
Drakengard is a little more wooden than DW/WO, but the story is awesomely twisted, and there's dragonback combat. Just stay the hell away from Drakengard 2.

Mount&Blade has superior melee combat to any game anyone else is suggesting
But for other options, there's the Warriors games for the PS2: Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi. Really just get the Empires versions though, they tack on a light strategy game on top of the original and it makes it more fun and engaging to have an overarching goal
Then if you like ancient Rome there's some games like Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance, which has awesome bloody combat but also some lame forced stealth sections, or there's Gladius which I heard was good, though that's an RPG so you're killing things with swords by selecting an option with a menu, not sure if that's what you're looking for
There's Way of the Samurai, that's an old budget game with a short story but a lot of freedom in how you can play it. The combat was a little wonky until you got the hang of it, but it was satisfying and you could kill lots and lots of dudes
I know I'm spacing on a bunch more, but those are all decent enough suggestions I think (edit: Devil May Cry 3 is awesome and only twenty dollars, get that too)

Jedi Academy is probably the best of the bunch. It just so happens to be the most recent as well.

Yeah, Mount and Blade has quick battles so have fun with that.
Actually, just get Warriors Orochi or Orochi 2, more people same gameplay, so you can find something you like.
edit: Mark of Kri if you can find it.

For how unloved this game is, sometimes I think I'm the only person who's ever played it.
This is why I'll never put my PS2 away for Good. I love that damn system... and it's so little and cute :P
