Resident Evil 5 Launch Party!
To celebrate the release of Resident Evil 5 on Friday, March 13th, Capcom and our friends at GameStop are throwing a launch party! On the eve of the launch, Thursday the 12th, meet us at Union Square in San Francisco to usher in Resident Evil 5. The event kicks off at 8pm and ends at midnight when you will be able to pick up your game- in-between we’ll have plenty going on to keep you busy. For starters, there will be a whole tent dedicated to the game where tons of kiosks will be set up and players will get a chance to get their hands on the game before grabbing it at midnight. You’ll also have the chance to win prizes and giveaways, meet the development team including co-producers, Takeuchi-san and Kawata-san and hang out with the motion capture/voice actors that played Chris, Sheva and Josh. To top it all off there will be new game announcements, stage shows, and Resident Evil activities all through out the night.
In order to guarantee you get the game at midnight, please stop by the Powell Street GameStop before the party to get your game transaction processed. You will need to get your proof of purchase wrist band and receipt for the GameStop store in order to pick-up your game at the party.
Also make sure to get there early as there will be limited space and we want to make sure you all get to enjoy the party!
Just to re-cap the details: be at Union Square in San Francisco by 8:00pm. I highly recommend getting there EARLY. We’ll party until midnight, then you can get your copy of the game with proof of purchase at the Powell St. GameStop. See you there!
If they really announce a new game we haven't heard yet, I'll be personally impressed. Capcom has been in a serious roll lately. They're the only console company that hasn't been disappointing this gen.
Kotaku speculates said "Game announcement" could be a RE:CV for the Wii. Details inside.Disclaimer: I have tried to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, however, open spoilers at your own risk. You have been warned. Please do not bitch me out for spoiling something for you that was already behind a spoiler tag to begin with.
Resident Evil 5 is the newest installment in the survival horror franchise, taking place 10 years after the events of the first game. This game marks the return of Resident Evil vet and, unconfirmed roid user, Chris Redfield. Redfield, after the events in Code Veronica, has since joined the BSAA, or BioTerrorism Security Assessment Alliance. He has been sent to Africa to investigate an incident involving the origin of Las Plagas from Resident Evil 4.
This game, however, will have a strong focus on cooperative play. Players will also have Sheva Alomar, Chris' partner with the BSAA, at their disposal. However, unlike your partner in Resident Evil 0, Sheva will be playable by another person, both online and offline split-screen.
Mercenaries is in, but only single-player or offline split-screen, according to IGN.EDIT: IGN is full of crap, details below:
ONLINE MERCENARIES EXPLAINED :
When you start the game, you download a patch.
This patch enables online mercenaries.
You then beat the game once and unlock mercenaries.
You then play it online with me and cry that I am that much better than you.
Gameplay: "Borrowed" from Wikipedia:
Jun Takeuchi, the game's producer, said that Resident Evil 5 will feature similar gameplay to Resident Evil 4. The player will control Chris Redfield similarly to how the player controlled Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 4, with the same over-the-shoulder perspective. The game's environment will also play a significant role. The Mercenaries minigame, which was featured in both Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4, will make a return in Resident Evil 5.
The game will also feature new types of enemies. The extended E3 2007 trailer revealed several sequences involving Redfield attacking hordes of fleet-footed enemies, who possessed melee weapons. Takeuchi has also stated the game's enemies will also possess human-like intelligence and awareness. Furthermore, he stated they will be different from the previous ganados. Takeuchi said that they have "greatly increased the number of weapon variations" compared to the previous games in the series, while the requisite handguns and shotguns also return.
In an interview with XBOX360ISM, Keiji Inafune stated that the game will feature some online elements. Resident Evil 5's main story mode can be played with two players, in a co-operative online mode. The feature will allow players to enter or leave anytime during the game. Players will not always stick together, and can be separated at points during the gameplay.
Trailers at Tokyo Game Show 2008, revealed an "offline co-op mode." This mode delivers the same co-op experience as offered by the online co-op mode, only with two local players controlling the action in split screen.
Following information pertaining to the BSAA and characters obtained through
Planet Resident Evil
Who are the BSAA?
The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA for short) was founded by the United Nations to combat the global spread of bio-organic weapons. Members who enter the field of duty are often highly trained in order to combat the highlighted dangers that bioweapons offer, and are deployed around the world to investigate any signs of a biohazard outbreak.
Formed as a response to the bioweapons developed by Umbrella, the BSAA has bases all around the world and counts many former STARS members among their active agents.
Characters:Chris Redfield
One of the founding members of BSAA, Chris Redfield is a Special Operations Agent hailing out of the North American Branch. He has an in-depth knowledge regarding bioweapons due to his experiences with STARS, and has a level 10 action authority that allows him to participate in investigations held by other actions. He has become one of BSAA's top members, preventing many cases of bioterrorism.
Sheva Alomar
Sheva Alomar is a member of BSAA's West African Branch. She has an intense hatred towards all forms of bioterrorism due to an event in her past, which remains undisclosed for security reasons. She has high marks in firearms usage and is an expert in many forms of martial arts.
I'm not putting the other side characters in to keep spoilers down to a minimum (This includes for myself).

Is there a collector's/limited edition?
Not only are there Limited Editions, but different ones across the world! All are available for PS3 and 360 versions:
North America:
This Collector's Edition will cost $90.
Europe:
Otherwise known as the "Steelbook" edition, as you can see, Capcom's art team has taken the bonkers-mad "Kijuju" motif and just run with it. It includes the game, a steel tin box and a bonus disc including a documentary on the making of the game and...a Resident Evil Degeneration trailer.
This Collector's Edition will cost 89€.
Japan:
Close ups are in spoiler:
Can only be obtained through Capcom's online store. Contains one Collector's Edition copy of RE5, one USB flash drive disguised as a Tricell vial, an art book, and a BSAA shoulder/waist strap. This box-o-awesome will set you back ¥12,800, or AU$207, or $129 USD.
Asia:
The release looks much more notably “budget” than the US or Japanese limited/collector’s editions, but this is the only SKU that is available with the 2GB chainsaw USB key. Otherwise, the game comes in a “Double Case” which houses both the game itself as well as a making of DVD. The picture implies there are three kinds of DVDs that come with the package, similar to the previous RE4 DVDs that featured random prints of Leon, Ashley and Ada too.
Although the release doesn’t (well, it doesn’t look like it) come with the awesome steelbook packaging, it WILL be in English and WILL be coming out on March 5th, so those who really can’t resist picking up the game a week early before everyone else might want to do so.
This Collector's Edition will cost $80.
Don't own a 360 or PS3, but want to join in on the not-zombie shooting fun in not-Africa?
Capcom's got you covered!
They will be releasing both a Special Edition 360 and PS3 with the release of the game. Unfortunately, said systems will not be readily available in all regions. The 360 will be released in the North American and European regions, and the PS3 will release in Japan. Here's what they will look like:
North America/Europe 360 bundle: $399.99/299€
Contains the following:
Xbox 360 Elite Console with Exclusive Red Finish
Matching red wireless controller
120GB hard drive
Resident Evil 5
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Exclusive Resident Evil Premium Theme
Xbox 360 black wired headset
HDTV-ready component HD AV, HDMI and Ethernet cablesJapanese PS3 bundle: ¥48,980
Contains the following:
Resident Evil 5
Special 80GB PS3 unit covered in RE5 logos
Second Dual Shock 3 controller. IGN reports that to be about a savings of ¥4,000 than if you were to buy all of those items separately.
Game Crazy Pre-order Bonus!
Probably the coolest pre-order bonus yet:
There have been quite a few strange pre-order bonuses over the years, but few come off as odd as Capcom's latest marketing ploy. Those of you who choose to pre-order Capcom's Resident Evil 5 at your local Game Crazy will receive a sand globe of Chris and Sheva. It goes without saying that this is a weird choice for a pre-order bonus, considering the holiday-esque nature of the item.
If I've missed any vital information, or if there's something you'd like to see in the OP, just pm me and I'll try to get it added as soon as possible. As stated before, I did not cover side characters as to not chance ruining plot points for people.

Good catch. European release on same day, March 13, for 299€. Updated in OP. Thanks!
Holy crap this is out next week?

Yep yep, a week from today.
Yep, actually have my roommate I'll be playing with on split-screen co-op, and another friend I'll play with over live, as well as one of my WoW guildies who wants to play this over live as well. I'm devoting my entire weekend to 2-3 play-throughs of this game.
Hrmm....because I am extremely bored, and had nothing better to do, I was poking around at some RE stuff, and noticed something odd. Chris's signature in his BSAA ID pictured in the character's section of the OP does not even come close to the one on his STARS ID from the original RE, pictured here:
I dunno, I just would've thought that would be something a developer would kind of keep an eye on. Again, yes, I was that bored. :P
People do tend to update their signatures when renewing licenses. At least I have, over the years.
I'm not getting the CE. I already blew the cash on the SFIV CE, since that featured a more attractive package (Ryu figurine, anime blu ray, extra costumes). I don't have any use for a tote bag, decal, or the other crap with RE5's CE, so I'll pass.
Any word on any store exclusive bonuses for buying the regular edition?
Blog||Tumblr|Steam|Twitter|FFXIV|Twitch|YouTube|Podcast|PSN|XBL|DarkZero
I mean is about that.
Worst game ever. Pre-order cancelled.

Actually, after more digging, I found where the updated signature came from. Apparently, in REmake, he has a new signature from the one shown in the original. That is where the RE5 sig came from:
The only pre-order bonus I found when buying the regular edition is the Game Crazy one posted in the OP. You guys hear of any others, be sure to let me know!

I was going to order the collector's edition, but that scares me. How likely is that to occure after the fiasco that was Halo 3? Surely someone checked it this time?
My goal is to have this be the only game for which I don't wait for a big price drop this year, but if a new Zelda, HL2:III, or Beyond Good and Evil 2 makes it out I don't know if I'll be able to resist.
According to some of these people, the first run through the game is good for about 8-10 hours. Don't be fooled by developer quotes about 30 hours, that's all I'm saying.

I believe it occurred with another game after Halo 3, but can't recall which game. It would be easily solved by coating the back of the case with a thin sheet of that spray on velvet looking stuff, while also making sure the disc sticks out a bit from the back of the case, as opposed to resting on it.

Maybe Bioshock was the other one with the metal case problems? I don't know, I never played either of them.
They do when you package them with the data side flush with the metal casing. How retarded was that.
If I recall, ffxii did have that problem, but it was a drastically smaller percent. Most people didn't even know about it. I only recall it now that you mention it, because I was still working at blockbuster, and had to deal with the "your crappy case scratched my game, so give me my money back. Imma go buy it at gamestop instead hur hur hur..." mouth-breathers that came in.
Dude looks nothing like he did in the original... or even REmake for that matter. Kinda stupid if you ask me, they could have at least kept his facial structure the same, even if they ditched the dorky haircut and beefed him up.
Now he looks like fucking Ben Stiller on roids.
Do you need someone to work the camera? or maybe set up lights?

You can do the make up.

Also spoilered just because:

That's freaking gorgeous too.
More accurate reports say 15-20.
I believe it all depends on your own personal pace. I mean, for me, personally, if someone is saying 8-10 hours, I can see myself taking closer to 15, simply because I like to take in the game, and appreciate all it has to offer. That, and I'm OCD about checking every last corner of every room.
I wouldn't fret too much about the length of the game, really. There's a great single- and multi-player campaign, a great side-game (mercenaries), as well as, likely, other side stuff to do (think assignment ada). Believe me, there is more than enough here to justify a $60 purchase for anybody who's a fan of RE, survival horror, action, or shooter games.
