So, my Zune showed up in the mail yesterday. Got it set up, loaded it up with my Itunes library. Liking it so far, except for one thing. Once more Microsoft's desire to add layers of unnecessary menus to things strikes again. When clicking on a song on my Zune, instead of just playing it like my iPod does, it instead jumps to another menu asking me if I want to play/add to a list/ or send the song to someone else. They may as well have just put in a pop-up saying "Are you sure you want to play this song?". Yes I'm goddamn sure, I clicked on it.
another vote for getting used to it, and I dont mean that in a "its inconvient" way, I mean it in a "its equal but different" way. It works really well once your used to it.
Then just press the play button with the song you want to play highlighted. It'll play! Or if you've got something playing already, press play to pause the current song, then press play again to play the highlighted song. It's magic!

Pretty much. Unless you'd like an actual "Are you sure you want to play this?"
Highlight a genre, album or artist and hitting the play key (that's the button to the left of the square-circle) basically just plays the whole thing after shuffling it. Highlighting one song will play only that one song.
Sounds pretty easy to me. Perhaps Metallikat is not aware of this?
Wow, that thing is smaller than it looks. They could increase it to at least the size of the iPhone, and throw in a camera and a larger battery.
It's OLED with Tegra. Something tells me you're not even going to remotely have complaints about the battery.
I can find all kinds of shit to complain about. Is there an estimate on how long the battery is going to last? The 120 only gets something like 4 hours of video.

Yeah, it won't be able to hold my entire collection, but I'm sure I can find a balance somewhere where I just keep rotating stuff on the HD and keep everything on the 120...

why would I want a camera in my mp3 player?
Cameras in handheld devices do not often work out quite right. Any reasonable point and shoot camera is leaps and bounds better than anything any phone or mp3 player has.
That being said, some of the dudes from Zune said that they don't put a feature onto the Zune if it isn't done well. No tacking shit on. So for radio, they made it HD radio. For the screen they have the Tegra and OLED lighting.
Seems to pan out to me and unless MS is going to develop something revolutionary for a camera handheld, they wouldn't have done it. And no, adding more megapixels is not "revolutionary."

Considering Tegra and OLED are both extremely low power components...
Yeah. At that sort of price point I'd be much more tempted to wait or possibly pick up an older player. Things like XBLA integration could still sway me, I suppose.
That's what you get when you cram that much stuff in a small package: high prices. Is anyone that surprised? I'm not.
I'm going to have to wait for the 64GB version, and even then it's not going to be cheap. Well, my Zune 80 still works, and deep down, I still hate touchscreens anyway. Damn fingerprints.

I guess I'm not surprised, but actually seeing a number related to the product is a bit of a shock. Especially since that price is the same that I paid for my 120, and it's only got just over 1/10th of the capacity.

I can feel and see my launch 30 getting old. HDD has pains spinning, and seek times are pretty noticeable. I really don't want to get rid of this thing, since it's wonderful, but I'm thinking I might just upgrade.

If it's the HDD, replacing it is always an option. You can even go up to 60GB if you need the additional space.
Out of curiosity, is there a way to defrag or wipe a Zune so when it's loaded up again albums are in order on the drive so it's not seeking all over while it's playing?

stolen from the interwebs:
You have to start performing a common reset process (pressing and holding the Back and Up buttons) and then, as soon as the screen turns blank, you have to press and hold the Back, Left and OK or Middle button.
This will take you through a lot of steps that will leave your Zune fresh and new.
wait what does that do?
my zune has started working again but freezes constantly.
it will say it's playing but no sound comes out of the jack. then it freezes and i have to restart it. also certain artists cause it to freeze consistently.
Sooo.. something weird happened after I set up my Zune, loaded up my itunes library into it and what have you. A day or so afterward, I noticed that I was mysteriously missing about 100 gigs of space on my hard drive. Seeing as how the Zune stuff was the only thing I'd really installed or messed around with during that time, I went checking through my music files. And one of my Tom Waits albums somehow went from about 200-400mb to roughly 100gigs in size (each song was showing up as 2-5 gigs in size). I can honestly say I'm kinda baffled as to how the hell that can even happen.
We can't keep the iPod Touch 16GB in stock at $295. If MS brings it in in the $250 range, I don't think they'll have a problem moving them.
People are also buying the iPod name, though.
It's a very tricky market to deal with if you aren't Apple, right now. Price too high, and folks would rather buy an iPod. Price too low, and folks assume the device is cheap because it is poor quality.

Four letters for you: O L E D
Show consumers that your product is noticeably better, and they will buy it. They already know that Apple products are overpriced, and they are looking for a way out.
Do things like outfit it with an OLED screen -- noticeably better and brighter than that in the iTouch -- or a Teflon backing like HTC has done with the Hero -- give it a solid user experience feel, and they will buy it.
The average consumer likes Apple products, but only because the rest of the products out there don't distinguish themselves and offer a better alternative right upfront.

Look, I don't deny that OLED is better
most folks don't care, though.
Look at all the folks who buy fullscreen movies, or complain about pillarboxing on their new HDTVs (which are hooked up to a VCR using composite cables, anyway.) Tech Specs don't matter to a large portion of the market.

I could totally justify getting one of these and giving my old Zune to the wife if it's not too off the wall.

Also, 16gb wouldn't hold all my crap to begin with, let alone have room for movies and whatnot.

Yeah, I think people are accepting a certain level of higher price ranges when it comes to something with a touch screen.

a camera blurs the line between experiencing content and originating content.
And I could easily live without apps and games on mp3 players
I also think that teh whole HD thing is silly.

Nope, since I'm not talking about an "mp3 player", but more about the personal media player that the Zune HD is.
