Microsoft emailed me yesterday saying they no longer manufacture the Zune16 in the color I had (black). I assume MS has squashed the 16 as not to compete with the HD. They offered to either replace the Zune16 with a red one, or refund my money. I don't really like the glossy red, so I chose the refund.
Last night I went to Best Buy to see what they had. I decided to get the Zune120. I brought it home and found about 15 stuck pixels. So I brought my sorry ass back to Best Buy and exchanged it. I only got as far as charging and synching the new one before I had to go to bed. We'll see how it does today at work.
So they accept that the battery problems are something they need to replace the unit for? I'm surprised they didn't just swap the internals or the battery with some parts rather than refund you. But cool you got your money back at least. Hope the second 120 does you well. I love mine, despite the few battery issues that pop up now and then.
I may send mine in when it does it again to me.
In other news, I purchased my first song from the marketplace today. I was spending my 10 song credits trying to get an album I never got around to buying the CD of, but it had 11 songs so I bought the 11th.
I also found a new band that sounds pretty cool, though I haven't had the time to listen through the album I downloaded fully. Decyfer Down I have the Crash album.

Well, I only assume the battery was the problem with mine. Like I said, it would die completely for a couple days before I could get it to respond again.
The other thing is I had a Zune Original. The original order took a good couple weeks before it even shipped, and when I called in the service request they gave me the same line about how it was going to take a couple weeks because I had an Original. Nevermind it didn't have artwork or any customization on it—I just got a vanilla Zune16. The only reason I ordered through MS was they were the only ones who stocked the Zune16. I told them it was strange they treated it like an Original when it wasn't one. They didn't care: policy is policy.
They were nice and responsive about everything. It was just a slow process.
It's nice to know you do have options for that sort of thing. My 80 doesn't have battery problems (to my knowledge), but at least if it did, I wouldn't be shit out of luck.

So, did they discontinue the 120? They don't have it listed on either futureshop.ca or amazon.ca. Did they pull it in preparation for the Zune HD?
If they did, it makes the decision between the 8GB and the 120GB much easier to make...

Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!
Not that I know of. From what they've announced I thought they were keeping the 120 (and any future HDD versions) around as alternatives to the ZuneHD, but the ZuneHD would essentially replace the flash memory devices.
Not sure why you're not seeing them.
In other news, I can't print or order a shipping label for my Zune to send it in for support because it errors out when I hit submit. OI!

Granted, it was because the employee at Target got an error while scanning it and neglected to correct it, but you can't beat free. Unless someone paid you to take one.
Once again, I am buffeted with people who are like "I don't get the zune, its like the ipod, only not as good."
"What makes the ipod so good."
"Its got touch, and games, and apps, and all that stuff."
"But it is an MP3 player. You just described something that does one thing plus 8 others. The zune does many things, but it does music especially well. I have the zune pass and have and am downloading whole collections of albums on the fly- whenever I fucking want. Plus- the zune platform really helps me track songs that I didn't know I liked in a way that iTunes never could- So I am getting more satisfaction out of my zune for music purposes, than your iTouch with your apps."

Yeah, the Zune is great on its own, but the Zune Pass really makes it really awesome.

Not just that, but the Zune software and marketplace just is fucking fantastic. I insist on calling it a Zune platform because it has a social aspect to it with pointing out what your friends listen to, how closely their tastes reflect yours, what new albums come out based on your favorite artists, who inspired your favorite artists, and all the while, you can just keep spamming the Download button willy nilly.
People don't get it, and they mock it, but I think MS really should hit the iTouch hard with "You have diluted yourself. You are no longer a music device, but a LOL OMFG Whatever device."
Speaking of the Social stuff, it'd be great if it were better integrated into the software; being able to view the full profile in the software as opposed to the current system of having to open it in a web browser would be great, but admittedly probably not very easy to implement.
I just want things like the compatibility metre implemented in the software. The way it is now seems a little... sparse.
I think the ONLY complaint about my Zune (besides the weird battery meter suddenly dropping, but I've adapted) is that the basic recommendations it gives me are nothing near what I would listen to. Example: I spent one week on a metal spree with Darkest Hour, Opeth, and Between the Buried and Me...and then it recommended Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold. However, this is rectified with the Zune Pass and the extra features, but it just weirded me out.
I know it was mentioned a while ago, but I can't seem to find it again: when was unicode going to be released? I'm tired of my Korean and Japanese music being shown in strange squares on my actual device :P
I think (I hope?) that we will see better social integration with the ZuneHD. Perhaps v4.0 will give us some more social as well.
The only downside with the social, is that my friends' tastes in music differ so greatly from mine that I can't really use any of the recommendations that the software picks out for me. Plus it seems to like to pick the same 2 artists all the time, which doesn't really broaden my musical experience since its just two well known bands that I already know I don't like.
The upside to the Zune pass, is that I'm currently listening to new music (and old) straight from their servers through the software. I don't have to download the songs to my hard drive to listen to it.. Though if I like it, then I can! It's really beautiful.
Oh yeah. That streaming music comes in really handy whenever I'm on my laptop, since I don't have enough hard drive space to mirror my desktop's music collection, but I do have mobile broadband...
It's pretty neat that it'll actually stream at a lower bitrate when your connection is slower, too. There are times when I get the same (non-quantitative) quality as the downloaded track, but also times when the quality is noticeably lower.

Not really a downside to social so much as a downside to, well, your friends.
Seriously, the only way to fix that is...to get new friends? o_O
open box at bestbuy for $15. I noticed that it was missing the AC adapter, which I didn't care about, but it's still supposed to come with it, and costs $30 separate) so I took it to customer service. I asked if they could make it cheaper, and after a bit of hemming and hawing, they knocked it down to $5

$30 for the AC adapter is stupid. The iPod adapter is the same price. Such a ripoff.
Yeah, I don't buy the official AC adapters. I usually pick up a third party AC->USB adapter from a brand I trust and use that with the cable. So much cheaper since it's not "branded" as an iPod accessory or official.
Yeah, the recommendations are generally pretty fucking worthless.
God help you if you ever listen to any rap at all, even just one song. You'll be buried under an avalanche of shitty recommendations.
That's not really a problem with the recommendation system...
And, Lucky, that album you put up is great background noise when playing Far Cry 2. Makes me just get into running around in the desert/rainforest for some reason.

So I just got my mom's old "broken" 30GB Zune. As with most of her discarded tech, it works fine and I have no idea why she tossed it except that she wanted an excuse to buy a new one. It looks nice next to my similarly acquired Blackberry.
First off, Christ in heaven is this software a pain in the ass. Second, is there a way to export playlists from a Zune to a PC?
What aspect of the software is being a pain in the ass? I'll be the first to admit, when I got my Zune 80 at launch, the new software took a lot of getting used to.
I've never made a playlist on the actual Zune (I don't even do them on my PC, for some reason).

Existing, old playlists on the Zune should stay on it unless you have it auto-sync. I would imagine you could copy them over into your Zune software and then fiddle with them in there?

So after upgrading to Win7, my Zune software seems to have problems with duplicate files. Every podcast I have is completely doubled and I have like a billion songs that have a bunch of duplicates. Can I somehow get Zune to go through my files and weed out the multiples, or do I have to do it manually. I don't have physical copies of files, but Zune thinks I do. I have one album, for instance, that has 3 copies of track 4, and I don't know why.

Maybe it's just something I need to get used to, but all the menus seem unintuitive and poorly laid out. I just want a window with tabs for different categories and settings, all arranged so as to be easily found.
My playlist question is because my mom wants the playlists off of the old Zune to put on her new Zune, and no longer has access to the original PC.
Try going to the device tab, then music, and finally playlists. On mine there's only an option (in the context menu) to delete the playlist from the device, but that may be because all the playlists on there are already synced with my desktop; I know you can right-click on albums and transfer them from the Zune to the computer, but I'm not sure about playlists.

For some reason after installing the Zune software and importing my music, my normal media player's artist organization is fucked. Any album or track with multiple artists is now separate, where before they'd be under album artist or just listed as 'multiple artists' for soundtracks and the like.
Also when I try to convert video from avi to wmv to put on the Zune with VLC or Any Video Converter Pro it will de-sync audio and video by several seconds :x
Zune software must not have imported the album artist tag. Go into album view and find the ones with multiple artists, and define an album artist to file it under and it will get rid of the separation. For soundtracks and things I usually just make the artist the genre. So soundtracks are under the artist "soundtracks".
Do you have to convert? I thought the Zune software and hardware supported avi now? Or is it divx?

Regardless of what the Zune software recognized, I'm failing to understand how it could screw up my regular media player.
As to the video conversion, when I go to add videos the only thing that shows up is my only WMV file.

There are a couple of converters out there. I use the Xilisoft converter, but I did have to pay $9 or $19 for it (I forget). There are some free ones too.
