Ox Baker Triumphant - A Mountain Goats thread

This is a thread about the band the Mountain Goats. They're awesome.

The Mountain Goats, in essence, is John Darnielle. Various musicians have played for and with the band over the years, but Darnielle is the singer, the writer, and what makes the band special.

Darnielle is an amazing songwriter. He has an ability to convey a story and really make you feel for the characters in it. You understand their joy, their pain. As a storyteller, he is virtually unmatched in the music industry today.

Musically, the band has gone through a huge evolution in tthe past few years. Originally, the Mountain Goats was Darnielle playing his acoustic guitar into a boombox. Today you can find high production values, and great backing music, including some great cello work.

Really, the only way to understand the band is to listen to them. Luckily, a fair bit of the band's music is available on the internets.

Jack & Faye, an unreleased EP, is a decent starter into the band:
Track 1 - Raid on Entebbe
Track 2 - Adair
Track 3 - An Inscription At Salonae
Track 4 - There Will Always Be An Ireland

This is one of my favorite Mountain Goats songs. You should listen to it, it is called Going to Port Washington.

Their newest video, Woke Up New, can be found here, on google video.

mcc once called this song the best song ever. But he probably doesn't remember.

This song is a huge fan favorite.

And here's a random song from Youtube

They also have a decent selection of live shows free for download at archive.org

A good place to start if you want to look further into them is their Babylon Springs EP on iTunes.

The Sunset Tree is an incredible album.

You should have No Children somewhere in that sampling of songs. One of their most powerful, most harrowing songs.

Get Lonely took a while to get into, but I like it a lot.

I saw them in Atlanta recently. They're really amazing live (heartbreaking but also funny sometimes), and John Darnielle does an adorable spastic dance onstage. Idiots in the audience wouldn't shut up during the ballads, though.

"The Hidden Places" is my personal favorite. Makes me want to curl up under the covers in the best way possible.

'All Hail West Texas' is probably my favorite album, but there's so much that's good it almost doesn't matter.

Now we are practical men of the world
We tether our dreams to the turf
And cruise down these alleys for honey to feed them
    Jellyfish riding the surf
Shoving our heads straight into the guts of the stove

    Home again

I don't think I can actually say what my favorite Mountain Goats album is.

How can any man choose between All Hail West Texas and We Shall All Be Healed?
