Unbundling Verizon DSL?

My parents have Verizon for phone and internet, and they want to cancel the phone part and keep the DSL. Verizon's website is basically useless, so help me out here. Is this possible? If so, how do I make Verizon do it? I've had to talk to their account support people before and it's like trying to explain stoichiometry to a slice of toast.

Just call, they do offer DSL-only service. They might slap a few extra fees on the line that you didn't pay before, but that's it.

Though it is more expensive, Speakeasy offers a "Onelink" service that does not require phone service.

There's a chance they might only offer slower speed caps than they offer with bundles. I think AT&T's that way.

If I recall correctly someone decided to make it a legal mandate that phone companies allow "naked" DSL lines - that is one without a phone number associated to the line. This should be easily available, though they may charge fees for having it "naked".

It's not phone companies in general -- only ATT as a condition for federal approval of their assimilation of BellSouth about 14 months ago. Of course, that expires after two years, while their being huge and a monopoly in many markets gets to continue forever.

Aha! I thought I recognized this post. ;)

As for your question, I'm getting dry loop DSL with AT&T for only about 5$ a month more than the same speed with phone service. Though I had to argue with them a bit to convince them it was available in my area.
