I really like Morrowind Comes Alive. It didn't mesh well with my existing save but once I'd started over, it made everything so much more tense but manageable. Screw Footpad though, he's the new Cliff racer.

If you do decide to run a lot of plugins then I would recommend the Morrowind FPS Optimizer. You can set an average FPS and it will modify some effects to give you the frames you want. It also gives you a basic 2X view distance boost. Not anything crazy like the Graphics Extender but just enough if the default fog gets too claustrophobic for you. Might take awhile to configure, though. Otherwise you may get a rolling line of low detail/high detail.

But the thought of having your own little posse to use all that armor and gear you found is quite worth it.

Thanks for all the great suggestions on plugins. I decided to go with these for my first run through:
All the official plugins released by Bethesda
The Morrowind Patch Project UUMPP (which incorporates the Unofficial Morrowind Patch)
    Less Generic NPC plugins

Depending how I end up feeling about the fog, I may use:
    Morrowind FPS Optimizer
    and/or
    Morrowind Graphics Extender

It's hard for me to decide on additional plugins without being more familiar with the game. I do have my eye on a few though for later playthroughs:
    Better heads/bodies
    Morrowind Comes Alive
    GIANTS
    Morrowind Visual Pack
+ a bunch of the smaller ones with new locations and items

Does it usually work out okay to add plugins in the middle of a saved game? From what I read, the main problem is only when trying to remove them and continue on with your save.

I'm really looking forward for Morrowind to get here so I can start playing. I've been out of the loop of pc gaming for a long time due to ancient hardware, but recently built a new box with some decent specs for gaming. Being able to manipulate and tinker with gaming content is something I have always enjoyed, and it feels good to come back to it after years of console gaming.

Oh god I forgot all about Giants. That was an awesome mod back in the day though some of the models look a bit cheesy even for MW standards. I liked fighting 2 story tall Nords.

Most of the models looked werd because they were ripped directly from NWN and the Gothic games iirc.

there can be problems with items and NPCs doubling if you add mods at a later stage. There is a program called Wrye Mash that can clean up your saves for you though. Adding plugins can also mess up the landscape if two mods modify the same area, making it impossible to enter buildings and leave gaps between the seams of the landscape.

For now if I were you I'd stick with the handful of mods you've chosen and leave adding mods to a later playthrough. Morrowind is a finicky beast and a big resourse hog, even on more modern computers, and mods that add a lot of people, animals or that make your view bigger will take their toll on fPS eventually, especially if you run a few in combination with eachother. ;)
It's also a rather unstable game at times and prone to crashing, so whatever you do, save often and use multiple saves.

Personally I prefer the wilderness mod (link) over giants since a lot of the Giants models are blatantly stolen from other games. A word of warning though, both mods add a lot of creatures not native to Vvardenfell. One of the charms of Morrowind is the otherworldly feel to it, flora and fauna seem alien and strange at times which has always made Morrowind stand out from a lot of other fantasy RPGs. For a first playthrough you might want to maintain that atmosphere.

If you plan on using archery get the the official Area of effect arrow mod, it allows you to use enchanted arrows making archery a lot more useful.

Anyway, Morrowind is my favorite game of all times and I hope you'll have fun with it. even though it has aged a bit it's still an amazing game and mods can make the game anything you want it to be.

Not to mention that the vendor it adds just happens to sell pretty much every bow in the game. For some reason, the loot tables hate me and I never found a Bonemold Long Bow until I installed the AoE Arrows mod. Of course, once I did I simply bought a Dwemer crossbow since you can machinegun it. :winky:

In other news, my Thief hit level 20 (Man, GCD levels you up fast. Sneak's my only skill above 80, and the rest are in the 60s and 70s.), finished the Morag Tong questline including the Threads of the Webspinner, and got my gear enchanted. I put mostly Fortify Strength on my armor due to a mod giving the Dark Brotherhood leader in Old Mournhold a new style of cuirass and gloves that are roughly as strong as glass, and have more enchanting capability, even more Fortify Strength on a shirt, some CE Restore Fatigue on a belt (so I don't have to stop and walk every time I get within half a mile of town so I won't be too exhausted to bargain with NPCs), Fortify Magicka and a 0-point slowfall on an amulet so that I can cast Mephala's Skill from the Morag Tong as well as remove fall damage, and finally some Sanctuary on my pants for good measure.

Oh, and a cast when strikes Restore Health enchant on my Daedric Wakizashi for general killing when the Black Hands Dagger would be way overkill. The Restore Health restores 7-15 or so per hit, and only uses two enchantment charges per swing. They are generally refilled after maybe an hour Waiting in-game.

I'm tough, but not unkillable, since I still have low health (around 99 due to GCD), so spells or very fast hitting enemies can still kill me if I can't get a hit off, so there's still an element of danger in the game. Well, at least until I enchant something to give me a ton of Endurance.

The first real complete playthrough I had, I took a Nord character with one of the better heads from Rhedd and micro balanced him with various CE resistances spells so that if he was hit with an elemental spell, he would not feel it.

Looking back, it feels kind of like cheating but he alread had frost and half thunder immunity, it was just a matter of building up some fire resistance.

One of the mods I liked the most was the gladiator mod, it doesn't add new models and textures, it just reuses other models in different ways. The penultimate resolution to the arena fights is a battle against "Satan" and a badass sword with no enchantments on it so you can pop in whatever you want.
It was a blue version of the Neverine Blade from Tribunal, it made the end of Tribunal so much more badass to fight Alymexia with a sword that look the same as my own stolen own.

MGE is good, but i wouldn't say you NEED the far landscape. especially first time through, since it kinda spoils you by being able to see shit that far away. its kinda fun creeping through the fog (unlike oblivion where it makes sense to be able to see across the world from the top of a mountain when its sunny out). but overall MGE is pretty nice and the far views are neat.

One of the main reasons I call far landscape essential is because of how it actually affects the atmosphere of the game, especially with being able to see Red Mountain and the ghostwall. It feels that much more ominous and oppressive when you get close to it. It think it really helps get in the mood of the people there, and see how it's shaped their culture, etc.

It also just helps the island feel like a cohesive whole to me.

    Area Effect Arrows

That is the least balanced of the official plugins- the new arrows cost much less than what should be expected for their effect, their weight per arrow is too low. The merchant has 8k gold - the 2nd most in the game excluding the easter-egg mudcrab. And the value of her stock menas it is far too easy to just loot her store for instant daedricc bows.

If playing with the official pugins this is one mod I would reccomend you NOT use.

I got my copy of Bloodmoon in the mail today, did a fresh install of Morrowind, then fired up the latest MGE. The problem is, I only get about 13-14 FPS with distant land turned on. It jumps up to 45 with it off. I set the distant land textures to almost as low as possible during generation and I don't have any mods installed beyond graphics replacements, better bodies, etc. Where am I going wrong? I don't have any reflective water or HDR fanciness enabled either. The distant land textures amount to about 40MB, and my graphics card is 256MB (shared). Even Oblivion runs better than this (although not by a whole lot...). Is there anything I can do to fix this?

On the Distant Lands tab try setting your draw distance lower (mine is set at 10); this affects the number of cells you can see around you. During the Land Mesh part of the DL Wizard dont set your normal map too high, it likes to eat up video memory and you wont be looking too closely at the crap in the background anyway. During Statics you can try messing with the Mesh detail (Still looks fine to me at 50%) and the Skip Minmap levels. On the Misc tab you can try to keep your framerates constant, but it might look weird with the detail line moving around.. FPS Optimizer works a little bit more efficient but it still takes some getting used to.

The help button in the newest version of MGE actually works now and takes you to a pretty detailed wiki.

Like, a lore-based reason? Vos is an ancient Dunmer faming community dating back to the old days of Veloth, and master Aryon (and likely Bethsoft as well) probably wanted a more male-friendly community in contrast with Tel Mora, which is run by the male-hating Dratha, so he had some Telvanni buildings and a new community built for the farmers in Vos. At least, that's how I always rationalized it. Besides, without Vos, there would be no ports on the main of Vvardenfell until you reached Khuul, and thus you'd have no fast travel access to the Grazelands short of gathering Propylon indexes, which nobody ever does.

What I've always wanted to know is why you can't sail from Sadrith Mora straight to Tel Aruhn. You have to sail to either Tel Mora or allllll the way up to Dagon Fel and then sail down to Tel Aruhn, despite Aruhn being about the same distrance from Sadrith Mora as Vos is from Tel Mora.

That irritates me enough to always use the all boat ports and all stilt strider ports mods.

I totally forgot about those mods. Thanks.

Also, I've started exploring around Telvannis in Tamriel Rebuilt, and I'm slightly underwhelmed so far. The area around Firewatch is nearly totally barren from what little I've explored (still can't find the raiders that are plaguing Firewatch though), but Kemel-Ze in the unfinished second TR release is amazing. It's such a huge, huge, huge area and an absolute treat to just explore.

I'm so very sorry. I even installed the Master Index official mod intending to actually collect them myself, but after having combed most of Vvardenfell multiple times over collecting just the Sanguine items for the Morag Tong, I couldn't be arsed to go find a bunch of purple propylon dildos lying around some crusty Ashlander yurts.

Besides, Propylon chambers lag the fuck out of me anyway.

The Morrowind Patch Project has been released. 1.6.4 it is an update, and includes all the fixes for 1.6.3

However it also changes the levelled lists, so you may need to use a merging program in order for it to work with your other mods.

I've tried lowering all the settings during distant land creation as far as they go without any appreciable difference. So far the only thing that's done anything was lowering the resolution to 720x480 from 1024x768.
It went up to about 18-19FPS outside when I did that.
Are there any other tweaks I could make? I still don't have AA on or any shaders or anything like that. Just about everything is turned down as far as it goes. Does the FPS optimizer help a lot?

EDIT: Never mind, figured it out. It turns out that MGE 3.8 causes a framerate drop for some people. I installed 3.7.2 instead and it runs fine.

I've decided to retire my Thief for a while and work on something new. I'm thinking something with a bit more magic so I don't have to haul around a hundred thousand scrolls just to use Almsivi/Divine intervention or soul trap stuff.

Problem is, I'm having trouble deciding how I want to play. Do I want a spellsword or a full-on mage? Do I want to be Dunmer, Breton, or otherwise? Do I want to go into House Telvanni, the Mages Guild, or both? Would it make RP-ish sense for a Dunmer to be in both? Would it make RP-ish sense for a Breton to be in House Telvanni? Would I be gimped as a Dunmer mage? Would I be gimped as a Breton spellsword? GCD is a bit punishing to hybrid classes and races going too far out of their 'usual' racial classes, so I have to take that into account. Then there's the whole internal debate over birthsigns. Apprentice or Atronach? Do I want the extra magicka or do I want to actually make use of GCD's Willpower-based magicka regen?

This is the kind of crap I end up thinking about whenever I make a new character, and I agonize over this junk for so long.
