DVDs and Subtitles

Hello all, I wasn't really sure where to turn to for help on this and since I've been a long time reader of Penny-Arcade, I figured this would be a safe place to start.

Situation: I've been living in Beijing for the last semester studying Chinese and have started amassing a collection of different Chinese and Korean films.

Problem: While most of the movies I buy come with English subtitles, a few that I've really wanted I can't find with English subtitles and as my time here is running short I decided I could find a way around it. I've found a website that I can download subtitles (in .srt format) from, and my Chinese is good enough to verify that the subtitles are all correct. I normally use VLC Player, however it doesn't support .srt files, so I've recently downloaded Media Player Classic 6.4.9, which does support .srt files. The issue is that the subtitles start to early, kind of flash in and out on the screen, and don't necessarily match the timing they should if I jump around in the movie.

Question: Is there a way to get the subtitles to match up with the film? I've downloaded another program VobSub, but it's kind of a mystery to me and I don't know what to do. Conversely, I've heard there's an easy way to mix avi files and subtitles if you have them, is there a (legal?) way I can do this?

I'm pretty computer competent, but this is out of my depth, any suggestions you have on how to watch the film with the subtitles would be great, even if its something completely different than what I've said I've done.

I'm pretty sure Media Player Classic allows you to adjust the timing on subtitles. I don't have anything with a separate sub's file on my computer right now so I can't access that Subtitles sub-menu in MPC but I'm pretty sure it's there.

    Hope that helps.

The issue isn't timing, and when I run the subtitles menu MPC shows that it knows when a subtitle is supposed to run, but for some reason or another does it. I am assuming this problem is unique to DVDs, and it's only a matter of fine tuning or adjusting a certain setting either in MPC or this VobSub to get the subtitles to play right
