Final Fantasy VI: Quite possibly the best JRPG ever when it was released in 1994 (In both Japan and North America only a few months apart!) It is the tale of a group of rebels fighting back against an evil empire. Set in a world of steam technology, the rediscovery of magic has threatened to bring the world back into an era of chaos.

Hadn't thought of a name yet after previewing all that. Entered a title...and hit enter. So it's live time!

The OP says "live" opening. You mean like, you're doing it off-the-cuff or you want to broadcast it live? If so, do you want guests?

When I was a kid, I always named Gao "Wesley", after Wesley Crusher. To me, they had the same level of annoyingness. I don't hold that against Wil Wheaton of course, you can only do so much with a character... but when I was a kid his character's antics always seemed out of place and bizzare. Just like Gao.

So yeah, that's my only good name suggestion. I really liked the original names of pretty much all of the characters.

EDIT: You could name Locke "EmoKid" and watch the hilarity ensue.

Cyan = Frog and Umaro = Ayla. Maybe not.
Edgar = Otto or Xbow. Just seems "right" to me.
Terra = Lordes. Okay, that's misspelled and obscure as all hell so... meh.
Gau = Ed? I don't care about the penis!

Sabin is my boy. I vote for Slater. Arthur Clifford represent!
(I would say Matrix for Sabin but everyone would think stupid movies rather than the awesome one I'm thinking of known as Commando)

I'm requesting that you name Shadow Brando. Thats how I got my user name and people call me that in real life. A buddy of mine was playing though FF6 and naming his characters; my name is Brandon. Well it came time to name Shadow and since the naming system in FF6 only allowed for 6 characters he named him Brando. He then proceeded to leave a series of crazy messages on my phone addressing me as "Brando The Ninja Master" then people just started calling me Brando from then on.

I know that nobody cares about that but now you have to name Shadow, Brando in my honor :P

If you're going the Calvin and Hobbes route, you should make Celes = Susie.
Umaro/Sabin = Moe
Edgar could be Spiff.
Someone else could be Roslyn.

Probably the same thing that happens if you name Red XIII "Nanaki" The game won't recognize its the same name, and just provide some awkward dialogue.

Yeah, I constantly use "real names" for characters after my first play through. I don't imagine Edgar's fake name would be treated any differently. (That is, dialogue is unchanged. Just awkward.)

For some reason I always name Terra Qbort.

I also once named Locke/Edgar Monkey and Fish.

It was funny when they talked about Terra's magic when she first casts fire when they're in a party together after Figaro: "Monkey-fish: pssst psst psst"

From a programming standpoint, the name is just a variable. "x" For every instance of 'x' in the script, replace 'x' with whatever variable the player assigned at the beginning of the game.

So it's very very unlikely that anything would be different. Has there been a game where if you use a certain name you get different dialouge? That would be pretty cool.

Besides, if there WAS anything different if you named him that other name, we would have known by now.

Wait, you never mentioned which version you're playing, although you do have an Advance picture in the OP. The Advance version would probably be better since you get the bonus stuff, plus we'd get the better quality translation. Of course then we'd miss out on the classic dialogue and names, but eh, no big deal.

I'm going to insist that you

attempt to solo Locke's...solo portion in South Figaro. Well, at least show that you can and what happens. I've tried before but I just couldn't beat the Tunnel Armor.

Although if you're playing Advance I'm not sure you can even do that, so whatever.

Also I want you to do one other thing that you might not do otherwise, but that's way near the end of the game so that can wait.

I seem to recall in Chronotrigger if you name frog Glenn or Marle Nadia they change something else later. But I could be wrong, never tried it myself.
