I have to say though, that chart isn't very accurate. If I saw a dude with a walkman right now I'd be giving him a big retro 'Up above, down below, in the middle, you're too slow'.

Though if you're using a shuffle chances are you're not an audiophile anyway. I just hate the stock buds so much.
I read an article about an informal study a professor has been doing over the past several years that you reminded me of. Basically, each year he would play a variety of music, like classical, jazz, and rock in various formats and compression ratings and note which one the students preferred.

These days, student enjoy the low-quality mp3 tracks to the complete uncompressed ones. He blames listening with shitty earbuds (like the stock iPod ones) and the proliferation of mp3 as the format of choice for everyday folks.

EDIT: ENGADGET AND GIZMODO 4 LIFE

Can you really hear a difference between 320kbps MP3 and uncompressed wav though?

Edit: If you have actual audiophile speakers or something I mean.

I bought a 2nd gen. not too long ago and I was dreading clicking on this thread because I thought it was going to be about the touch and I would've had to go cry a little.

My Zune is a horribly frustrating device (or, more accurately, the software is) but I love it. It plays via FM transmitter perfectly in my car, which is unprecedented.

If the software functioned on ANY of my computers, and allowed me to add/remove music (or if they just made the thing FUNCTION AS A MOTHERFUCKING HARD DRIVE) then it would be pretty much all I need.

Until a >60GB SSD iPod comes out, then it's all over.

    That graph is totally wrong.

New technology is the coolest when it first comes out and no one has it. All of those lines, save for maybe the Zune line should start with the coolness at a high point that then goes down as more and more people purchase the item. You are no longer the one person at the party showing off your cellular phone. You're not the only guy in town with a horseless carriage.

After technology becomes obsolete however, it again because cool to own it as once again, no one has it. Antique cars, Ataris, Zach Morris phones.

    That graph is so wrong.

My software works okay. It's not great though, and a lot more opaque than itunes.

You can probably use winamp though? I think?

I've tried shit along those lines and it seems like Microsoft is just making it as hard as possible to use anything but the Zune Software.

I'll check up on it, though. I haven't looked in a while. I will hate installing a newer version of Winamp though. HATE. (I am using 2.x)

Yeah, most programs these days have plugins and whatnot that'll support an iPod or any other mp3 player.

Yamipod is a cool cross-platform program that you can install right onto your iPod (when disk mode is enabled) that will let you extract/load music onto your iPod.

Are you really unable to add and remove music, though?

I mean.... that seems like it could be problem. With an mp3 player.

Do you have all that synch bs turned off and have it on manual? I always do that.

The Zune Software will not even run anymore. I can't tell if it's detecting anything because it won't start. I never even get to the UI; just get an error code (which I have done extensive searching on, to no avail).

If I could find another program to manage files on the goddamn thing I imagine I'd be all set.

Man I just do not remember this much trouble going from OS 9 to OS X, and there was no cross compatibility there at all.

    What was their secret??

You can replace the battery on some

You just void your warranty in doing so.

Native dual booting/running OS9 in the OSX environment.

It was pretty awesome when things like Quark didn't update for OSX for about 3 years after release... fucking Quark.

If it's under warranty they will replace the battery if it drops below 50% of the original capacity.
If it's not, it costs around $79.

The warranty is only 1 year.
    It also doesn't cover:
    • scratches
    • dents
    • cracked screens
    • loose headphone wires
    • it doesn't fucking work at all for no good goddamn reason
    • anything else
