[Game On] Navy Field: Imperial Arcadia Rises Again

edited May 2009 in Games and Technology
Navy Field is a game where you start with a crew and a small frigate and join massive naval battles to gain experience and credits to upgrade your ship and crew experience. Eventually you will have to hire on more crews and maintain a powerful warship full of airplanes and/or torpedoes.

The fights are between usually two teams, not necessarily even in numbers, but even in firepower. Generally these teams are random unless you get involved in the clan stuff. You play on a stretch of ocean and attempt to manuever and fire against the enemy ships until they are all sunk or you are all sunk. There are a several different types of weapons you can concentrate on, and different ship types from Battlecruisers and Carriers to Submarines.

You can download the client for Navy Field here. It is free, and very low on the spec requirements. I recommend choosing the third banner from the Client Download list and then choosing the middle download: NF1244_fullclient.exe 428584 kBytes

I would be up for a Game On. Unless they deleted my Japanese carrier. Oh gods, how do I use carriers again?

You know what would be awesome? A space themed Navy Field.

Downloading the client now. I wonder if my old account and trusty German battleship are still there.

I do hope they've done something about the sometimes torturous waits for the rooms to become ready, though

I miss my god damned CL Brooklyn back in the beta days. :( Then the beta ended and they introduced a pay model for a game not really worth the price they charged. :(

Fuck torp walls. That is all.

Edit: Wait, you have to pay for it now? I thought all it had was a cash shop.

Further edit: Navy Field is nothing like Eve. Why? Because you actually directly control your ship.

Installing now. My old login was accepted on the site, I'll let you know if I can play. It looks like there are "premium" membership accounts with increased money/experience rates.

There's also this in their guide, but it could be out of date:

    1) Navy Field is a free game, therefore, it is not mandatory to purchase subscriptions or items.

Edit: Nothing beats the feeling of successfully navigating a Torpedo Wall.

Logged in just fine. Checked all three servers, looks like my ship is gone. Aww well, wasn't having much fun playing a carrier anyways. Someone decide which server we should play on and I'll join you tomorrow.

So what you're trying to tell me is that Navy Field involves a ton of sitting around mining before the game starts being fun in any way shape or form?

EVE is an awful representation of fleet or submarine warfare. It's a great game but it really doesn't measure up for the old war-type feeling. I wish it had accurate ship controls and arc based turrets.

PS you don't have to mine for eve to be fun; join a low-sec pirate corp, so long as the corp arent stingy they'll more than likely be happy to provide you with warfunds to keep the battles flowing. A testament to this, I did it myself a few weeks ago, rolled a rifter pilot and have not gone back to my main since.

They introduced a pay to play model right after beta ended. But in all honesty the game was nowhere, and in my opinion still nowhere, near the amount of polish and fixing it needed to justify a pay to play model. Obviously other people agreed because they got rid of the subscription thing pretty quickly and made it free to play with restrictions on xp and money gain unless you bought special account boosts from the store.

Omni-directional turrets are pretty stupid in my opinion; the more powerful the turret, the less arc it should traverse.
Positioning and flanking then become extremely important in larger warfare; currently in EVE it doesnt matter where you approach from- only the distance, vector and speed.

Edit: I think we're talking about different topics; I wasn't referring to projectiles, but the cannons firing them.
Example: ship can only fire from its front 30 degrees either side with main weaponry.

I believe you're forgetting that space is a vacuum so a projectile will move in a straight line regardless of its weight and speed.

I stopped playing this when I was taking ages to make money and xp to get my german coolboats and switched to a 22" widescreen monitor and found out they have no widescreen option and it looks terrible and makes it incredibly difficult to aim. Have they got 21st century resolutions available yet?

A projectile in a vacuum on earth will follow a parabolic trajectory, you mean there is negligible gravity in space. And to be a complete pedant, if an object has a weight then by definition it is being affected by gravity (weight being the action of gravity on a mass).

Oh and wren you're completely misinterpreting him, I think he means turrets can traverse the same angle in the same time regardless of how powerful they are? I dunno, I've never played eve.

I stopped playing this when I realized I had nowhere near the skill required to make the German line of ships work the way they are supposed to. (Slightly longer range guns, less damage, less armor + No patience for kiting things = Bad times). But I might be willing to fire it up again and try the US or British Navy.

So, server? I assume ships aren't shared between them. I stopped playing because I switched to carriers too early. Didn't have good enough planes to do much.

I personally am on the New York server, but another fellow is on the Arizona one. I can change if the Penny Arcadians decide on a different one though. Also, I love the UK ships, and recommend them. That or US for your first nation is a wise choice, I believe.

Oh cool I've still got an Emerald, an Emden and a Z99 on Arizona. I can't even remember if this thing has guilds or not, and how do you turn off the music?

ed: Okay yeah there are clans, do we have a PA one?

Oh, now I remember why I stopped, I need 300k credits for an Admiral Hipper and I also only have 9k points for crew.

Maybe I can be a suicide torp ship.

Now that they have Submarines, you can go torpedo AND dive underwater where people can't see you.
