The urge for creation

Hi guys! I'm getting that itch again.. I want to create something. A campaign in an RPG game, a level in a shooter, just.. something! So recommend me some games that have the ability to be easily moduled to tell little stories. I know Neverwinter Nights is a favorite for this and it's definitely on my list, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Alternatively, if you've created something for a game, post some screenshots!

UT2k4 Editor's edition or UT3 special comes with Hours upon hours of tutorials.

The Unreal Editors are much better for level editing because of real-time previews, less tweaking required to get working properly and just a better interface overall. However the Source engine takes advantage of a lot of cool technology. For playing around I'd recommended the Unreal Editors though.

I started playing around with the UE3 editor a while ago. The picture above is my now-abandoned attempt to make Shattrath (From WoW) in the Ue3 Engine. Custom sky, a few custom textures here and there. Fun stuff to play with. I want to get more serious, but I need someone to direct me. I'm a bastard on my own!

I have a bunch of unfinished maps lying around, and every week I play around in Maya a bit. Still haven't made anything concrete yet though.

But if you want to you use the textures/models that come on the disc you can make some amazing stuff. Hell, you can publish your creations for Xbox and Playstation users!

Wow, that's pretty awesome. Props. Can't give direction, but if you keep going, I'd love to see where it goes.

Oh, StarCraft and WarCraft III probably have some of the easiest map editors around. You can do crazy things with enough triggers.

Make some Little Big Planet levels. You can create a whole campaign by stringing the levels together.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Garry's Mod for the Source engine lets you make stuff out of props and things from HL2 and it's sister games. Kinda like freeform Lego. It also has a large amount of fun mini-mods to extend functionality or add new models to build with.

You'll be havin' a good time.

And then there's Blast Works for Wii. Create ships, levels, bullet patterns, just about anything!

    Awesome.

Also, for my case (but keep them coming to have a more general thread), I'd love something where I can keep using ingame art and such to place crap in an editor to make levels and then add some scripting and NPC dialogue. Similar to what I've read about the NWN editor. I don't think I'd want to try my hand at a fullfledged mod.

Morrowind, Oblivion or Fallout 3 modding works that way.

Problem is that when you're starting with a NWN2 mod at this point, considering the complexity of using the toolset and length of development, the community will be essentially dead by the time you're finished (depending on the size of the project, of course) and everyone will be just waiting for NWN3/BG3/Dragon Age to drop. There's some great community-created content to use, but NWN2 never quite lifted off as NWN did and I just don't think it's worth the time and effort to develope something for only a small number of people. I heard NWN is still popular, but that game has also reached it's peak a long time ago, and I personally can't stand the limitations of it's toolset.

Pretty well. Im fooling around in NWN for a bit and playing on my old sever an hour or two here and there (which still has 20+ people on at any given time) but it did reach and has now passed the peak. Your better off trying the source engine if you want to make something, as NWN/NWN2 really are not just something you wip up one afternoon, it takes alot of work to make an even decent mod. I can say that I have fooled around in source (not garrys mod, which I have heard is all kinds of awsome) and have tried to make a tf2 level and was actually able to get decently far in only a few days work. So id recomend Source and garrys mod really.

EDIT: Here is the link to the sever's fourms if you want to check it out. Its NWN 1 mind you, not NWN 2. They have thought about moving to NWN 2 but not enough people are behind the idea to make it worth it. I played on that sever since it first came out, back in 2005 I belive, and I kept playing till early 2007. I mean, the fact that people still play on it, a 4 year old mod, on a 7 year old game just goes to show you how much work the admins/builders put into the sever, and how sucesful it is. Back in its prime the player cap of 70 people was regularly filled and you would have to wait a while for a spot on the sever.

Crysis (assuming you can run it) has the amazingly intuitive Sandbox 2 editor. It's ridiculously easy to get an island up and fill it with enemies in about 10 minutes, and just faff about in it. It's a lot easier to start off in than UE3, and there's plenty of tutorials and video tutorials on the net.

Still, the special edition of UT3 does come with about 20 hours worth of video tutorials, which are genuinely intuitive and start things off right from basics.

Both NWN games are good for this. NWN is much easier to use, but despite what everyone says about the NWN2 toolset, with some practice and a couple good tutorials, you can produce some nice stuff even without much practice.

A few friends and I were working on a project in NWN2 and they're working on one. With little experience, we produced some pretty decent looking areas.

WOW CHECK THIS OUT!!! PIXEL ART IS AWESOME!

I've had some fun with RPG Maker, its a nice easy outlet for making things.

But I'll have to go with the Source SDK. Make yourself a map in there. I think its relatively easy, but then again I haven't tried the Unreal Engine Editor. I should probably try that out sometime.
