I can never understand this boards relationship with The Darkness. It was universally panned pretty hard and that tends to be the opinion of like half the people here, but the other half treat it like the second coming. For people who like it so much, what are the people who don't missing?
Honestly? I don't even know. To me, it was an utterly fantastic single-player experience in every way. The multiplayer was just as broken as the single player campaign was amazing, but I don't see that as a good reason to rip the game a new asshole. The atmosphere was terrific, the Darkness abilities were fresh, and a lot of fun. The story was immersive; I actually cared about Jackie, and was legitimately pissed off when he got fucked over. On top of all this, you also got to enjoy some of Mike Patton's best work throughout the entire game. The gunplay left a bit to be desired, I will readily admit, but honestly I rarely even used the guns.
I legitimately do not understand the widespread hatred for the game, you'd have to get an answer from someone who hated it.
As someone who didn't like The Darkness, I can tell you what my biggest problem with the game was. The game lived up to its name. The game rewards you for destroying lights and punishes you for not destroying them and as a result, I have never played a game before or since where it was so difficult to see what I was doing. Even playing late at night in a dark room, I had a really hard time seeing where I was and as a result, I got stuck and lost on a regular basis.
Light issues aside, I thought the game was fairly meh. The darkness abilities were cool in theory, but often had problems in actual execution (your summons had all the intelligence of a Dead Rising survivor & the tentacle was buggy). Level design was mediocre, the pacing was off, and the story was disappointing (mostly because I had heard so many people rave about it as being amazing and it turned out to be merely pretty good).

I could see being let down by The Darkness if i paid 39.99 or whatever it was first priced at. However I paid about 11.99 for it used, for that amount of money I was amused for 6-7 hours. The only thing that kind of irked me was the Achievement's. Too much emphasis on using the darkness abilities. I finally finished most of them on the last stage, and I was making a conscious effort starting about 30 minutes into the game to do so.
Same goes for Dark Sector, if i paid 39.99 I might be a bit pissed by the characters odd habit of getting stuck in back pedal now and then, and some of the other control issues. However for 9.99 new I spent a full weekend lopping off heads and going predator on some shield wielding bitches.
Dead Rising, Crackdown (Also fun in Co-op) Marvel Ultimate alliance for co-op, castle crashers (XBL) for co-op, Left 4 Dead for Co-op, GoW, GoW2, Geomitry wars2

It has a few problems, for sure, but it is definitely worth playing, just to see if you like it.
