The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I use Goozex. I received the DVD only which has caused an issue of me not being able to register the game to download the EE patch. So I figured I'd just play the vanilla version. It loads up and plays the intro movie then brings me to the main menu. I go to start a new game it loads up then immediately crashes and gives me an error message. I don't know what to do about it.
I've browsed the stickied topics at the official the Witcher Forum and found that I can email Atari and give them the barcode numbers and I should get a registration key. I only have the numbers on the CD which I'm not sure will suffice but I'm trying it anyway hoping that will solve this problem.
If anyone has any tips on how to get this game to not instantly crash upon starting a new game I'd appreciate the advice.
Also I'm not quite sure if this is the proper forum to be discussing this. As it's not really a "Let's talk about such and such video game." kind of thread and more of a "I'm a very sad man right now, as I can't play what I'm told is a very awesome RPG. Please help me." kind of thread.
Anyway I figured I'd try being a desperate sad man that I am.
I have emailed the sender. I asked him to tell me exactly how he installed the game hoping that perhaps I made a mistake in the installation process somewhere. I know my computer can run the game, just for some reason it won't let me start a new game.
I have posted a topic on the Goozex Help & Support forum. A few replies from very courteous people, but nothing especially useful. I'm trying my hardest to figure out if I did something wrong. I hear this game is very crashy, but not being able to get to even play the game before it crashes is a bit much.
I'd be very sad if I lost 500 points and a trade credit over this as I don't have many points and just ran out of trade credits on this trade.
I have a version of The Witcher that came with a video card and, like yours, didn't have a CD key. The numbers/letters along the inner ring of the CD ( I just sent both sets) are what you want to send to Atari support, and they should send you a valid CD key that you can use to install the EE with.

I'd like to pause a moment for a public service announcement.
Don't buy pre-owned PC games. Ever. Shit like this will happen. Maybe you don't get a key or maybe you get a key that's already been tied an account for multiplayer/patching. Maybe it's associated with a Steam account and will never install. I shouldn't even need to mention some modern games having install limits. Now there are exceptions you can make when you know what you're getting into with a particular game, but in general? Just. Don't. Do. It.
Far as I know, the deal with Atari support was an exception made for OEM copies that didn't ship with keys in the first place. If this isn't what you bought, then you're probably SOL if you can't contact the seller.

All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
