The first thing that came to my mind when I heard about M+ was boxing. Boxing in Wii Sports suuuuuuucks, everything else is atleast functional. I was SO disappointed to hear the new Punch-Out won't be using this new tech. FUCK. THAT.
One of the more interesting things to happen in gaming (the fully enabled motion controls will probably have some wild applications, especially if you've got one M+ wii remote in each hand) and the collective response of the enthusiast outlets seems to be: meh, Wii is garbage.
That shit is kinda sad. Not like I expect the first generation of titles using it to be mind-blowing, but it seems like one of the more interesting leaps forward we've had in a while, and it's on a system with a wide install base, and it'll essentially be like 50$ to pick up a couple.
Seems like a big deal to me. I have high hopes for the Tiger Woods game, that looks amazing.

To be fair, it's an optional add-on being introduced more than two years after the console's launch. It could be (and hopefully will be) amazing, but given that it will probably take developers a while to get the hang of using it, no one's really certain how effective MotionPlus will actually be in practice.

Or could it possibly be the fact that Nintendo has failed to be successful in a way that appeals to gamers since the SNES?
It's like Nintendo just refuses to make the right choice, even when the correct choice is so incredibly apparent.
FACT: Most gamers disillusioned with Nintendo are angsty because they have failed to re-create landscape which made gaming popular. (ie, many games, third party and otherwise, quality, cutting edge graphics & sound). I have not been excited about Nintendo since the N64 disapointed me.
M+, is just what Nintendo wanted you to think you were getting when the Wii was originally released. I will be buying it anyway.
The 'right choice' apparently was to stick to what made the GameCube fail and try to appeal to 'hardcore gamers' that left them for dead two generations in a row?
Nintendo made gaming popular with the weakest system of the generation. The most powerful console of a gen has never won it's generation.
NES won it's gen, even though it was the weakest.
The SNES is the lone exception, but the Genesis still had some particular strengths.
The PSX won it's gen even though it was weaker than the N64 and possibly the Saturn.
The PS2 won it's gen against 3 other consoles that had better looking games, and 2 of them had either 2x or 3x the RAM and twice the processor power.
The Wii is winning this gen and it's also the weakest. Nintendo has even been quoted saying the reason they didn't spend R&D on graphix powah was they noticed the trend and the PS2 winning even though it was the weakest.
Im excited for M+, I just am really really nervous we're going to start seeing what Nintendo is doing with the DS happen with the Wii.
Not so much 'punishing' early adopters, but having 2 things exist concurrently that are ALMOST the same, but different enough that I feel screwed because the company is supporting the newer one much more.
I just got a DS lite 6 months ago, and at the moment have no fear of the DSi, but I don't want - or need - a DSi. I hope it stays that way, and am afraid eventually some game will come out for the DSi that can't run on a DS Lite, or that some feature that's a key element to a game will only be supported on the DSi. It's hard to justify why I'd get mad about it because I understand new products mean you don't support outdated tech, but I don't like my console/system life cycle being drastically cut short - and don't really understand having 2 systems out that do almost the same thing.
And I worry about that with M+. I'll buy it, but I just worry that HARDWARE is now entering that terrible realm that games already exist in -- ship it broken, or half-done, and patch it later. At my expense.
I'm already going through it with my iPhone (mines 2G, so about half the things in iPhone OS 3 work for me...but because the 3G is really all that matters now, there's really no coverage or info about WHY the 2G isn't getting the features) - and I worry that Wii 2.0 will be here soon, with M+ included, and a DVD player or something...

Many of your points are arguable.
Wii might be winning in terms of sales, but the games are mostly shovel ware... PSX might have been a tad behind in terms of graphics, but sound, capacity, third party support were all there. PS2 only beat out the Xbox because it had a massive head start in the race.
I am not saying graphics override everything, but you really need to have a good combination of quality third party support, graphics, online support, and exclusivity.
Nintendo is just trailing behind on in all of these areas. Sure it might be selling well, but my Wii collects dust when my chick isn't hula-hooping on Wii fit, and I have not personally bought a game for it since Brawl.
And why is the NDS so successful? A great combination of all of those things. Graphical power is defintely there, third party support, great online capabilities for a hand held, and tons of exclusive titles. If NDS was a home console I would have gladly spent 300 bucks on it rather than a Wii at this moment in time.
I pray that M+ spurrs developers in the right direction as far as quality. I don't mind spending the money but I expect to see results in the titles that are offered.
Oh and BTW, GC failed because it did NOT practice most of those qualitys, graphical power was not utilized, almost 0 online support, not much in terms of third party support. GC was not cutting edge in any sense.

Actually the PS2 won because of it's massive third party support, and the fact that you could easily just buy one and continue playing your existing PS1 library. Which also included tons and tons of shovelware. PSX? Shovelware city. SNES and Genesis? You betcha - shovelware.
PSX's sound only benefitted from the CD format, the N64 could actually pull off true surround sound.
Wii has quality third party support. The graphics are just fine, but too many publishers just have their developers port the PS2 version and call it a day, because they get away with it. Online support doesn't mean anything yet. Exclusivity? It has Nintendo franchises and Dragon Quest exclusive this go-round, what else does it need? Exclusivity hasn't saved the PS3.
And we all know the Nintendo franchies like Zelda and so on will have a Wii iteration, and people these days know they will get them when they buy a Nintendo console. They don't have to exist right now to trigger sales. Halo 3 didn't exist until 2 years into the 360 lifecycle, but people still bought 360s because they knew a Halo game was coming.

Considering all the Wii games I've played that do waggle well there's really no excuse for the volumes upon volumes of shitty waggle other than developer laziness.

Nintendo sets the precedent for each of their consoles. They launched the Wii with a Gamecube port and a waggle based mini game compilation and what do we get from developers? Ports and waggle mini games. I believe that Nintendo deserves to take a large portion of the blame for the state of the Wii. People look towards Nintendo to follow and this is what happens when you don't have a Super Mario 64 on launch.
Lets hope that Nintendo can use the Motion Plus as a second chance.

Personally, with the M+, beyond sport games such as Tennis, Pool, Fishing and Golf, what I'd really like to see is some sort of Ouendan/EBA adapted to waggle, where movements are requested of you rather than positioning. Like, quarter circle with your arm up, then point forward, etc. The screen would prompt you in advance with some sort of line to help you time exactly when the movement has to be completed, etc.

That would be fun. My favorite boss stage in Wario Ware is the dance challenge, even if it's quite simple. With M+ they could greatly expand on that concept.
Ignore the dumbass troll. He's a dumbass saying the same old tired arguments that we've heard time and time again and doesn't know a fact from a hole in his ass.
I think that "developers look to Nintendo for direction" is a load of shit. Developers are perfectly free to make whatever they want. SM64 is not a good example because it was an absolute revolution. Besides, Nintendo opened with SN64 and what did we get after? 2 of the very best shooters ever made. Third party, not clones of SM64. I am just eagerly awaiting The Conduit.
I also predict that by next generation, developers will have realised that spending $Texas on developing for the HD consoles is a losing proposition and will start to shift some of their big development teams to the Wii. Nintendo COULD perhaps be blamed for not pointing out to these developers (who are apparently absolute dumbasses) that among the 30 million + wii owners exist plenty of people who would love to buy a fully-featured Call of Duty or Resident Evil if it actually got the same kind of attention to detail and marketing that they give to the HD consoles.
I will say it again because only one person caught on: NMH + Motion Plus. Just think about it.
I will say it again because only one person caught on: NMH + Motion Plus. Just think about it.
I first read that, and think "Oh my god that could be the greatest game ever."
But the more I think about it, the more I think that NMH + Motion Plus would just make for a really really TIRING game.
Games like NMH, I think, wouldn't and shouldn't use Motion +. NMH was perfect - it's fast enough that using buttons to fight is awesome and gets the job done. Using motion plus, in addition to be tiring, would be a chore and a half with multiple enemies. Using the nunchuck to move AND having to make sure I'm holding my sword 1:1 with where it needs to be on screen, as the camera is moving, would be really hard. And it's fast paced enough that the simple swipe of the wiimote in multiple directions to finish off people is enough for me.
Perhaps using it JUST to finish people off (you move the wiimote, and Travis slices him up in the same motions), but NMH is pretty perfect as is.
I just hope Motion Plus doesn't inspire games to use it just because it's there.
And about my comment a page ago - I know the DS is 5 years old, I wasn't really articulating well what I feel Nintendo is doing. Basically I see it as them competing with THEMSELVES, which is odd. There's always a clear divide between console generations - big fanfare, announcing the new system, launch titles, all that. With DSi Nintendo hasn't done any of that - it's just kinda sneaking in, alongside the DS. But the problem will be that now you've got DSi development, and games that will be just for the DSi - and stuff like the Guitar Hero DS games that you can't play on the DSi. And with no clear cut "We're moving on to this platform now." it's a little odd to me.
But with the Wii, I already see more and more games that you can play with the balance board, and now motion plus is coming, and I'm conflicted because on one hand I'm all for putting out different things that let you enjoy a game more, but on the other I really don't want to have to consult a chart when looking into a game to make sure I've got the correct add-ons to fully enjoy it.

You...are aware that you just perfectly described Helix on Wiiware, right? Never understood why that game didn't get more press.

I think the whole "peripherals split the market" argument got killed by Nintendo this gen because that logic only applies to the 360/PS3 model. You will definitely have a hard time selling 60$ HD games that require an extra bit of hardware on those systems, and no publishers will bother trying.
But on the Wii the average price point is probably closer to 30$. People are picking up balance board titles (Wii Ski, that snowboarding WiiWare title) and light gun games because they already have the hardware and the price of entry is pretty cheap.
So it's not that hard to imagine someone coming up with a 15$ WiiWare sword fighting game or motion plus dogfighting game and having it sell like crazy.

I think a big problem with the Wii is that instead of trying, developers just consider it a porting option for the PS2. This is a system that is a generation after RE4. If the developers didn't halfass it, they could make things look beautiful. Not photosynthetic or whatever, but art direction is much more important anyways. If they actually tried to make good motion controls instead of just tacking on waggle, it'd also be kinda nice.

Of course the few developers that use more than 2.74% of their ass during Wii development can do waggle well, so there's hope.
