co-op RPG recommendations for someone who likes Diablo 2 but hates Sacred?
Hello. I was just browsing lists of RPG demos at Fileplanet. My wife and I have played co-op through the Xbox's Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. We are about halfway through Diablo 2 and I picked up Sacred for $5 off Amazon and can't stomach the adjustment from Diablo 2 to Sacred.
My highly-footnoted question is:
does anyone have any suggestions, or links to, good co-op RPG (similar, like Fallout) like Diablo / Diablo 2? I now realize I should have just looked for a Sacred demo first but at $5 I'm not too broken up. Also I'm pretty well out of the PC gaming..game.
Also, last footnote is I'm not looking to get into the World of Warcraft style, for her sake and mine. We just like a self-contained story we can get through over local TCP/IP.
Titan Quest is the best diablo-style game around. Lots of fun in co-op as well. Pretty cheap these days too (you should be able to find the game + expansion pack for $20 or less).
If you locate the TitanQuest thread (it's probably on page 2 or 3 of the G&T area), some people disagree with urahonky and say that it's better than D2.
Now, I'm not arguing that, but by many accounts TQ is a fantastic game, and one I'm also thinking about picking up in the near future. It seems to have much to recommend it.
Ah... Well if you really didn't like Sacred you might not like Titan Quest but I'd give it a shot. Just know it's not quite as good as Diablo 2.
Personally, I enjoy Titan Quest a lot more than Diablo 2. Not everything is better in Titan Quest, but enough things are better.
Titan Quest has a more interesting class system (you have 8 masteries to choose from & you combine 2 to make your class).
Titan Quest is a lot more convenient in many ways - for example, there are no unidentified items to deal with.
Titan Quest is easy to mod so you can find a lot of extra campaigns & additions if you go looking for them. In fact, there are even mods that add new spells & masteries.
Titan Quest's graphics are substantially better than Diablo 2's. The music is also really good, though I haven't payed enough attention to be able to say which I like better.
I like Titan Quest's setting more than Diablo. In Titan Quest, you have 4 main acts - Greece, Egypt, China, and the Underworld.
EDIT: Be warned that the demo for Titan Quest is a lot buggier than the actual game. I've heard many instances where people had trouble with the demo but the actual game ran fine.
Shadowgrounds / Shadowgrounds Survivor have two player co-op on the same PC.
They're not really action RPG's, actually they're isometric action games with a slight weapons upgrade system. But they're pretty fun (especially Survivor), and I'd recommend them to anyone. Not many PC games cater to co-op on the same machine, so that's a big bonus if you're interested. The demo will give you a decent idea of what to expect.
If you're looking for a more Diablo style, then you might be interested in Dungeon Siege 2 (or even Dungeon Siege 1, but 2 is better). Sort of like a streamlined and 3D version of Diablo to a large extent, the demo ought to give you a good idea of what it plays like.

You left out that you can pay some gold to reallocate your skills, meaning you don't have to worry about planning out your entire character before you start.
Titan quest. It's Diablo 2 with prettier graphics and less refined skill trees. Also: Dungeon Siege 2! fucking awesome game, totally underapreciated.
Why did ya hate Sacred? the weird mechanics?
Yeah, the Dungeon Seige series was made for Co op, the second game is alot (in my opnion) better than the first, as it actually has skill trees and such. My dad, one of my older brothers and myself one weekend played through all of Dungeon Seige 2. Easily one of the best co-op experences ive had, as it is an easy game to play, but you can go really technical and make some really cool set ups. My dad fooled around and orginally made an archer type, but then half way through went all out in magic, and he turned out fine, not as good as my brother or myself but still fine and was still helpful.
X-Men Legends 1 and 2, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance are all Dark Alliance-style games. I thought Legends II was the best of those three. And Ultimate Alliance II should release this year.

Forgot to mention: get the expansion. Totally worth it.
My favorite parts in D2 were the slaughtering of hundreds of demons in little to no time, and getting phat loot quickly. Both of these are missing completely in TQ.
I've bought the game twice (once in store, and the other on Steam since it was on sale) and each time I finish normal and just quit. I have no desire to ever really get any further. I tried running the final boss in the game like 20 times and never got anything more than a magical item (which means that after the first kill, each subsequent kill yields lesser loot). Now I know people like that (God knows why) but I thought it was pretty lame.
Plus the game was far too slow paced compared to D2.

Yeah, that was intentional. The developers thought the whole idea of people spending the vast majority of their time repeatedly fighting the same boss over and over for loot and ignoring the rest of the game was stupid so they nerfed the boss drops and increased the chance that good stuff will drop from random enemies. As a result, if you're looking for good loot, you're better off fighting in areas with random monsters that can drop what you're looking for as opposed to farming bosses. I'll admit that the execution of their idea could have better (a boss should drop good stuff at least the first time you beat him on a difficulty), but I agree with their reasoning behind their decision.
Oh and if you want to defeat scores of monsters in no time in Titan Quest, there are mods that drastically increase the number of enemies. Use a good AOE character and you're set.
As for pacing, I can't say that I remember Diablo being particularly fast paced. In fact, that's one reason why I never finished the game; I got to the second or third act and it felt like my character progression was going far too slowly.

The last difficulty level was insanely fast paced. Single misclick and bam: lightning out of the darkness and you're dust. You just lot a chunk of xp, princess.
If he didn't like Sacred 1 then Sacred 2 isn't gonna do any better. Dawn of War 2 is a thought, but keep in mind it's insanely reflex based on the higher difficulties and it's only got one campaign that can be finished (even with optional bits) in 3 or 4 days.

>> actually it would have been more accurate of me to say it was first impression "Meh," and I didn't really give it a chance. One of those times where your leisure time is short enough, that when you try something and it doesn't really stick, why spend more time on it.
I did try X-Men Legends (I) and it didn't stick either. Hunter: The Reckoning on the Xbox was ok but very shallow, I would call it a rental game.
Thanks again for the tips. Me posting on this forum was the underqualified asking the overqualified.
