Okay, I got some opinions on this but H/A is a better place to ask anyway.
I am going on a trip and have never taken my snowboard on an airplane before.
I am flying Northwest and this is what they say:
Two pieces-ski boot bag and one pair of skis are charged the applicable checked bag fee for the 1st or 2nd checked bag. When in excess, each item will be subject to the baggage charge for single piece.
Free if under 50 lbs
Okay, cool.
So I have my snowboard and boots. I have a snowboard bag that is basically of backpack material, and has no padding. I also have a helmet. And goggles and clothes etc.
Okay, so, what should I do.
How do I pack the snowboard? Do I take the bindings off or leave them on, and if I do take them off what do I do with them? How should I wrap my clothing around the snowboard? Can I put my boots in my snowboard bag also if they fit (I don't have a separate "boot bag")?
I know my helmet fits inside my backpack (and I want to take my backpack since I'm also taking my laptop with me, I think)... I could also take an additional carry on bag also, like a small duffel, but you know, less is better.
Any other tips? Etc etc.

leave the bindings on. use your clothes to wrap the board. if you can fit you boots in do it. if you turn them flat to the board they will be close to the height of the bindings anyway.
keep it as close to 50 pounds as possible. then put whatever clothes you don't use to wrap the board in a carry on
pack light you really won't need that many clothes, seriously you are snowboarding its ok if you wear the same thing multiple times
