Roommate experiencing strange laptop problems

My roommate has recently started having some problems with his laptop: the computer starts up and asks him if he wants to boot into recovery mode or to start Windows (Vista) normally. He selects Vista, and then it runs a disk consistency check. Once this is done, it hits the Vista logo, and then another Vista screen (I don't know what the exact wording of this message is, as I don't speak Chinese (:P), but he says that it's something to the effect of "Booting Vista...")

He then gets a black screen with a white cursor...and nothing.

A friend brought over his XP install disk, but it couldn't find the hard drive during the installation. He took it to the campus help desk, and they said to go and do a fresh install of Vista, but his computer didn't come with the Vista disc, and we'd like to exhaust all our options before paying for a new license.

I took a look at it earlier, and I noticed something unusual: the case says that it's an Compaq Presario V3000, but the BIOS says that it's a Compaq Presario V3700.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. :)
