alright, before my Metal Gear thread gets side-tracked into a Zone of the Enders thread i decided to give ZOE it's own thread. I found ZOE to be pretty damn unique, especially after having played Armored Core. Giant mechs that don't actually walk? and move fast as fuck? and whose cockpit is a...cock? fuckin a man!
so discuss; what did you like/dislike about the first two series entries? What would you like to see in a third entry? would you even like a thrid entry?
i'm kind of hoping they give the more grown-up, less whiny, Leo Stenbuck the controls of Jehuty again, but then i'm torn because Dingo was cool too...maybe share the game between the two...i dunno that's what you're here for.
what is it with Hideo Kojima and making whiny-ass main characters into cool side characters? (see: Raiden from MGS2/4)

I've never heard any news about a third installment ever. So yeah. Kojima said he'd like to do it though i think, during an interview like 2 years ago. But i don't think it's ever been said it WILL be done or that it is in any way even being made at this time.
Other than that, i actually liked ZotE series a lot more than i liked MGS and i really wish they'd pick up the series for a new installment.
Please let this thread be free from "Kojima direct ZOE3" posts, please. Shuyo Murata (who also co-wrote and co-directed MGS4 for reference) wrote and directed both games, it's his franchise, not Kojima's. I've no clue why so many so-called ZOE fans think Kojima directed them, it's as if they never reached the credits...
This isn't directed to anyone here btw, mostly to cesspools like Neogaf.
The series unfortunately for some reason just sort of slipped under peoples radars. I know people rented/bought the original ZotE so they could play the early MGS2 Demo when it first came out, but a lot of people ignored the actual game and it sort of just slipped by unnoticed. The second one, which was extremely good, was not carried at all in a lot of major retailers and is actually a pretty hard to find game, and was pretty limited release.
yeah, it really saddens me how often stellar games get lost in the shuffle. see also: Beyond Good and Evil, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, Rez, and to a lesser extent Ico.
but now that i've written that list, all of those games got/have coming sequels of some kind. hmmm, now i have ever so slightly more hope for a ZOE 3

I know this is a silly thought, but I really hope its not PS3 exclusive. I would really want to play the latest sequel, but not pay for a ps3 just for it much.
unless there's a real drastic upswing in PS3 sales there's a good chance it'll be multiplatform. Kojima has a particular distaste for the 360 for some reason, but as Unco-ordinated pointed out, he's not in charge. The only other potential hurdle would be a massive, blu-ray filling game a la MGS4 that wouldn't fit on a dvd, but that can be overcome just by planning ahead and takign the 360 into account.

I wasn't saying that Kojima isn't in charge, his studio is called Kojima Productions, he's quite obviously in charge (Murata is his employee). I somehow doubt Konami would over-rule him either, especially with the state of the rest of their internal studios (aka, they're a complete mess).
And Kojima doesn't have a distaste for the 360, any claims of him having one are ridiculous. He just doesn't like making multiplatform games, he prefers making a game for a single system and hates ports (due to shitty prior experiences with MG1 and MGS2: Substance).
I doubt it'd be developed on the PS3 or 360 anyway, it'd cost FAR too much and ZOE isn't exactly a huge franchise. My guess? PSP.
yep, my bad. the thing i was remembering was about his annoyance at constatnly being asked abput MGS4 being ported to 360 (damn you memory) and someone ELSE saying he disliked the 360 on another forum when that cryptic teaser for Metal Gear Touch came out and everyoen thought it was for a 360 port of MGS4 (see how my recollection got crossed there?).
and i wasn't saying that he wasn't in charge at all, i'm aware he got his own studio in 2005, just that without ZOE being directly under his influence, the game's director would likely decide what platform it lands on. but since my original assertion that he dislikes the 360 was incorrect the point is moot.

Awesome moment from ZOE2 was when Leo turned up piloting
FUCKING VIC VIPER, complete with Gradius boss music
, then after a brief but intense battle, Ada recognises him, and that tune from the ending of ZOE1 started playing in the background- for some reason it really threw me as being pretty epic.
Both ZOE games are two of the greatest mech games ever (Armored Core #29439902845 not withstanding). Just PLEASE, can we get a better name than Dingo Egret next time? I guess it's better than Edge Maverick or Fayt Leingod...but only marginally.
it's especially comical since both a Dingo and an Egret are animals, it's kinda like they just picked random names out of a hat full of animal flash cards. also, forgive my ignorance but; what's an LP?

oh HELLS yeah! i forgot how awesome the music was, the violin solo is particularly asskicking. if i remember correctly the song is called Beyond the Bounds, can't think of the artist though.
I really liked the song from the first one too. i think it was the opening song, but i know if you let the main menu idle for a few minutes it plays it with a gameplay montage. anyone? anyone? bueller?

I just picked ZoE 2 during my gamestop buy2get1free purchases. Kinda just saw it there and was like isn't this game supposed to be cool and hard to find? So I snatched it. Sucks it didn't come with a manual though. I'll try the game later on today.
didn't care too much for dingo but I loved Leo Stenbuck so much i'm naming one of my kids after him. i thought it was great that even though he's still really young he's such a badass and if you played ZOE2 after the first than you just felt you were with him as he became that badass. I just wish that he would have came in and finished viola's orbital frame then that lame deletion boss fight.

Oh fuck yes. That part was sooooo awesome. I remember being all "WHAT THE FUCK NO WAY!" when that happened. So epic.
When I first got Zone of the Enders, I loved it. I didn't see any of it's problems, only that I was in a giant robot and was flying around blowing up other, lamer giant robots.
Eventually I beat the game. Giant squids, bombs, Viola, and I even survived the teleporting murder machine that was Anubis. With Jehuty, I think, I'm a little less than unstoppable.
Oh hey, the game has a versus mode! That's cool. So I call a friend over. He's not played the game before, but he's heard me talk about it, and after a few minutes learning the controls, he's ready to go.
He kicks my ass. Over and over and over. I don't understand it, and I am so angry. So we put the game away and move on to other things.
But since then, every time I note a game has a two player versus mode, I think finally! My chance for redemption!
But even when I win, there's still a part of me, in the back, that's sore about that ancient, humbling defeat.

go pick up RAD for the ps2, most fun you will ever have in a VS mode in any game ever.

Zone of the Enders 2 has my all-time favorite power creep ever. Everything just gets exponentially epic at the perfect pace.
Starting off cool, but still facing difficulty with swarms of normal enemies? Fun.
Getting better and better weapons and facing bigger and bigger battles? Still fun.
Giant showdown with a flying battleship armada? And you have a giant space-time distorting laser beam that requires a cool charging sequence? Awesome.
Giant robot melee with dozens of enemies clashing around you and you're just running around ruining all kinds of shit? DOUBLE AWESOME.
And I dare anyone who plays the game to not go "OH FUCK YEAH" when they get the Zero Shift.

And the setup for Anubis is perfect. For the two games, you've had to eat an ass-kicking from him every time he showed up. Finally getting to even that score is beyond sweet.
LP = Let's Play. For most games, this means that someone will play through them while recording, usually offering up a running dialogue (often of the humorous sort) to go along with watching the gameplay. If you look around in G&T, you'll see different threads for them, such as the ones being done by Kaseius and Helloween right now. Something Awful also have a large archive of LPs. So, basically, I said that someone should play through the ZotE games and record it so I can live vicariously through them.
the controls in this game were hands down the best part for me. your mech moved like such a badass.
in armored core i always feel clunky and slow, but in ZoE you pretty much kicked ass

I hope we hear some new info on ZOE3 now that MGS4 is done. It's been a while since we heard any news.
I never asked for this!
If so, many
If not, fuck you for getting my hopes up.

What system were these for? I've heard good things but I've always been curious.
I would hazard a guess and say PS2.
what the hell...since when do i talk like that?
damn, beat me.
for shame.
although...i just bought God of War II a few days ago to prepare for III so....you could probably say the same to me
I have about a dozen PS2 games I need to finish up. About the same number of 360 games.. =P
Not quite the absolute classic some claim, but a fine game nontheless.
A sequal would be welcome.

I think the biggest thing to remember when thinking of the quality.
It's a mech game. The average game in this genre is pretty mediocre at best.
That makes it far better than it's above average self would normally be.

Yeah, not surprising. The game is incredibly hard to come by. ZOE 1 on the other hand is fairly easy to find.

The inclusion of this song on Snake's Ipod in MGS4 was what spurred me to track down and complete both ZOE games.
It's so infuriatingly catchy yet totally impossible to hum, whistle or sing to yourself.
I really liked the song from the first one too. i think it was the opening song, but i know if you let the main menu idle for a few minutes it plays it with a gameplay montage. anyone? anyone? bueller?

Oh you know I would love to sooo much, but I have no way of capturing the video. It's depressing.
Also, if you liked the games, you should watch the ZOE: Idolo OVA. And maybe even the ZOE: Dolores,i series, Nohman/Anubis show up in it.
And yeah, as cool as Dingo is, his name is so terrible.
