[spoiler:5aeefe4b4a]Basically what you want to do is constantly circle strafe him while keeping the crates between you two. Normally he will unload his gun into the crates and you can shoot him as he reloads. You can also run to the generators that are fenced in. This generally gives him trouble and as long as you don't put a ton of distance between you two, he shouldn't jump over it. But really the best thing to do is be patient and keep the crates between you two.[/spoiler:5aeefe4b4a]

[spoiler:d8eb34216a]Definitely, I thought the circle strafe+wall technique made the fight pathetically easy: I got hit maybe once or twice, and I'm terrible at MGS games.[/spoiler:d8eb34216a]
edit: Also, 63rd most popular GOTY? One other guy voted it 1? Man, this series lost a lot of popularity on these boards.

At the very end of the game, he talks on the phone with another unknown party, who is presumably a female. Am I correct to assume that this could be Eva he is talking to? I just assumed he was talking to [realspoiler:cfdabaae83]Major Zero. Since based on what Gene said earlier in the game we assume that's who is offering a lot of the funding.[/realspoiler:cfdabaae83]
[realspoiler:cfdabaae83]Bingo. Also, when they talk about the mystery backer, it looked like a man with an eye scar.

Eva doesn't make too much sense as she knew neither Boss nor Volgin and does not have the resources or power to have planned Snake Eater.[/realspoiler:cfdabaae83]
[realspoiler:cfdabaae83]I could have sworn somewhere in the phone conversation Ocelot referred the the person he was speaking to as a woman.... I need to find me a script or something and go over that.

Also, I guess its now safe to assume that Big Boss is a founding member of the patriots. But now this confuses me even more, since Otacon states at the end of MGS2 the all of the patriots have been dead for 200(?) years. What am I missing?[/realspoiler:cfdabaae83]

[realspoiler:cfdabaae83] as regards to the patriots being dead for 200 years, I always thought that was the computer crashing- you know, arsenal gear. it presented wrong documents, the major started talking crazy, etc.

also, why do people think it's major zero? why would he do something like that? :( [/realspoiler:cfdabaae83]
[realspoiler:cfdabaae83]"...the man with the same code name as Null..." Null is German for Zero. Frank Jeager spoke German.

Remember when Zero gave Snake the question and answer to look for when talking to Adam and Eve in Snake Eater?

    "Who are the Patriots?"
    "La Li Lu Le Lo."[/realspoiler:cfdabaae83]
[realspoiler:cfdabaae83]Ooooh so thats the connection with major zero. I had always wondered why that was the question and answer for Snake to find Adam and Eve, but what exactly is the significance of "La Li Lu Le Lo?" What do those words actually mean?

[speculation]Also, we might be able to say that Adam is the father of the patriots. Would it then be possible that Eve/Eva be the mother?[/speculation] I'm sorry, I can't get past the fact that Eva isn't involved. After all, isn't she playable in portable ops? [/realspoiler:cfdabaae83]
[realspoiler:cfdabaae83]La Li Lu Le Lo doesn't mean anything. It's Japanese phonetics. It's nonsense sounds. I think Zero did it because he has a sense of humor, and he knows he's clever, and Kojima wanted to plant that seed so that someone would make that connection, like we are right now.

In MGS2, "La Li Lu Le Lo" is what Raiden hears when someone says "The Patriots". That's because he has nanomachines in him that are monitored and created by the Patriots. It's like a *bleep* when someone curses, engineered by the Patriots to keep Raiden confused and clueless about what is really going on.[/realspoiler:cfdabaae83]

Dammit, if Kojima is going to make Document of MGS2 to explain what's going on in the damn game, what's the freaking point. He should put all that information readily available in one damn game.

    a) You can perfectly understand MGS2 by just playing the game. The Document of MGS2 just gives you a greater insight into the plot (as all "behind the scenes" stuff do).

    b) It's pretty easy to find a copy of Document in Europe, a copy was included with every copy of MGS2: Substance.

Dammit, if Kojima is going to make Document of MGS2 to explain what's going on in the damn game, what's the freaking point. He should put all that information readily available in one damn game.

...especially not if you're going to seemingly print 5 copies of Document worldwide.
    a) You can perfectly understand MGS2 by just playing the game. The Document of MGS2 just gives you a greater insight into the plot (as all "behind the scenes" stuff do).

    b) It's pretty easy to find a copy of Document in Europe, a copy was included with every copy of MGS2: Substance.
    a) The things Renzo just mentioned in his last Real Spoiler post above is nowhere in MGS2 and only in Document.

    b) I don't live in Europe.

Yeah, we should probably not spoiler the MGS2 stuff, but definitely keep the Portable Ops stuff spoilered... especially since I'm not done yet. :)

Hopefully we'll find some more information on the Patriots/LaLiLuLeLo soon. I did like the way The Last Days of Foxhound covered the "mental block", though.

I would absolutely purchase the original, MGS2: Substance (for PS2), and MGS3: Subsistence. They offer so much more gameplay than the original releases, that they're almost different games.

If you can't find the original PSOne version, definitely get Twin Snakes, as it's a very good remake.

I was in a similar situation back in 2005. I bought Ac!d when I got my PSP, and it was my first taste of the series. Entranced by the mythos involved in that game, I went online and orderd MGS (PS1), MGS2 (PS2), and MGS3 (PS2) and played through them in a week. I then played MGS3 through twice more times, and got my Foxhound ranking. ^.^

I've since played Ac!d 2, Ghost Babel, MG(NES), and am currently playing MPO (Kil0ton, if you ever see me).

Mr. Llama's advice is sound, though. I wish I had spent more time and found Substance or Integral online, though Subsistence wasn't out at the moment. If you get the "remixed" versions, you'll thank yourself. Believe me.

If you have a Gamecube or Wii, you should get Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. It's a re-make of the first MGS game with new graphics and new cutscenes from the director of Versus, plus gameplay elements from the second game (like the first person aim mode and wall hanging and so forth). I thought the cutscenes were awesome, but some said they were "unbelievable."

For gods sake, not this again. Thanks a lot Dashui.

But if I have to argue it, I will. So, have you played Twin Snakes? For starters I don't think there's a cutscene where Snake doesn't do a flip. Missile fired at Snake?! Let's do a flip! Sniper?! Flip! Gotta get past a door?! Flip over it baby! It gets fucking stupid.

Secondly, one of the key things in the Metal Gear series (and MGS1 in particular, which you find out at the end) is that Solid Snake is the ultimate underdog. He goes up against people with crazy powers and huge freaking vehicles (whether they be a tank, Hind D or Metal Gear) and yet he still comes out victorious, without superpowers. But in Twin Snakes, he suddenly becomes this superhuman soldier that can do flips over doors, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I loved THE cutscene with Grey Fox. It was awesome. It's a pity that it was included in one of the early trailers though, as it was the main highlight in the game.

Having said this however, the cutscenes are nowhere near Twin Snakes' biggest problem. My biggest problem with Twin Snakes is that it's completely broken. Why? Well for starters, they failed Remake School (the same school that Shinji Mikami left with honours btw). What do they teach in Remake School, you ask? Remake School teaches that you can't add a feature without balancing the game for that feature. Did they do that in Twin Snakes? Nope, thanks to Silicon Knights brilliant insight, you can very easily go into first person view and finish bosses in under a minute.

Take note that if I wanted to, I could easily start arguments about the voice acting, soundtrack, controls and graphics too but like the cutscenes, they are minor complaints compared to my main one.

As far as the choice between MGS1 and Twin Snakes, I'd say that you should buy both. If you really can't stand MGS1's graphics and gameplay (though I have no problems with them) then you can play through Twin Snakes. But if you can play through MGS1 first, you can then play through Twin Snakes to find out how horrible it really is. Oh and get VR Missions as well, the mystery missions are awesome.

They are absolutely ridiculous. The badass thing about MGS is that all these dudes have these crazy talents, but Snake is just the perfect warrior and no one can beat him, even though he doesn't have supernatural talents. Then in Twin Snakes you see him jumping on missiles in midair flying towards him. It is just fucking retarded.

I finally got my Portable Ops review posted to my blog if anyone cares. I just thought I'd share what I thought to be the two worst parts of the game.

"One is a brief, very uncharacteristic platforming element in the Silo Complex level. I get the feeling Hideo Kojima backhanded someone when he played through that portion. It is especially frustrating on Extreme difficulty due to the key placement. This isn't Mario, okay?

Secondly, in the Ravine level, en route to the Power Substation, you come to a boulder in your path that prompts a codec conversation, telling you to find another route. I suppose one could double back around the other side of the canyon, or perhaps bring explosives to destroy the blockage. I wouldn't know, however, because I just had Snake hang off the edge of the path and climb his way around the large rock. This is Metal Gear Solid, okay? Electrified floors that need to be disabled with remote controlled missiles, I expect that. I also expect to use cigar smoke to identify infrared security systems. But, climbing around a rock? What the fuck, Konami? What is that?"

Oh, btw aett, your haiku pwns.

Really, that's all opinions opinions lol.
The remake doesn't follow YOUR PERSONAL concept of what Snake SHOULD be. Tough luck, Kojima likes it. That kind of crazy fun shit happens in MGS3 too. It is most definitely not an absolute issue, it is completely and utterly subjective. As opposed to say, making MGSTT a kart racing game. Now THAT would be a real, objective problem with it.

And in most of the bosses, first person shooting didn't do any good. Maybe Psycho Mantis and Revolver Ocelot got a bit easier. But the Tank, Raven, Wolf and the end fights didn't get easier at all. So, another complaint shot down.

Really, we are aware that you hate TT because it offends some of your personal conclusions about MGS, but most people enjoy it a lot. I know I did. I find PSX 3D graphics to be unbearably ugly, and I can't fathom how would shooting the guards on 3rd person could be any fun. That kind of thing happens.

Yeah, I don't think I could stomach playing MGS anymore with those graphics and gameplay (actually, I don't mean it that negative; I probably could and still enjoy it, but why when there's an enhanced experience released?). The first person aiming really made it more fun and immersible for me. I thought the cutscenes were great fun, too, and made the game worth purchasing again to see the new content.

I thought the only real unbelievable part was him jumping off a rocket to dodge it, but the rest wasn't that bad. So he dodged a bullet by jumping? He did some cool CQC moves against a few soldiers. He is an enhanced super soldier, after all. It makes sense he can do a few cool things, and it was fun to see. There's no real need to get offended over it; it's not as if Snake was all of a sudden an latino drug dealer.

That's just my opinion of Twin Snakes; I can understand if someone else didn't like it. Yet I don't see how anyone could pass up the chance to play it in a much higher quality with a first person camera (and I can't help it; I really liked the new cutscenes of snake being awesome).
