Comic Book Art Style Resources?

I'm directing a show right now, and for our set we're doing a bunch of comic-book style backgrounds. I've got a graphic designer to help me create all the sets and such, but he (quite reasonably) wants a little more direction than "make it look like a superhero comic book" - ideally, I should give him some example artists or works to get across the general style I'm looking for.
The problem is that I don't know what I'm talking about - I don't really read comic books, and although I have a pretty good idea in my mind of what I'm looking for, I don't know how to classify it, and I certainly don't off the top of my head know what artists are good examples of what I want.
Hence, my question: do any of you guys know any good web sites that will give me a general overview of the history of comic book art, or any other good resources for this sort of thing?
