i was just browsing youtube (after clicking the link kindly provided by gundam470 in poldy's incomprehensible thread), which prompted me to take a nice trip down memory lane, as i listened to a song i hadn't heard in a long time. i remembered another song from a long time ago (shima uta (or the japanese version), that a japanese exchange student sang to me a long time ago in the U.S., and later again when i visited her in japan), and had an extremely excellent ten minutes of nostalgia that will fit neatly onto my ipod for future use.

i was wondering what other people have found in the way of artifacts from their childhood, be it media, wiki, or whatever.

raw lists kind of blow, so linkage would be nice, as well as a teeny weeny backstory, if you're feeling contributive.

EDIT: added japanese version of shima uta

I remember when I spent an entire summer waking up to the same 3 shows on USA: American Gladiators, Ronin Warriors, and Exosquad! I think I was about 11 at the time, but I remember getting up and catching this 2 hour block of quality TV every day, while chowing down on cereal.

    Good times.

This thread is making me feel old.

This was a big deal to me when I found it (holy shit 9 years ago). I read the whole thing over a week or so, and still retain a lot of the info today.

RetroJunk is great. I managed to track down the name of a show I could never remember the name of (which made it pretty hard to search for info for) with a guy and a kid who travelled through time with a compass or something. Voyagers! as it turns out.

Oh, and Gafoto - read the rules thread. Like, right now.

jandaru, the format of the page your first link goes to reminded me of the university of chicago scavenger hunt (and the glorious lists of items) that i discovered in 1999, after they made a trace amount of plutonium and uranium in a homemade breeder reactor.

    my personal favorite items:

A video store membership card from as many states as possible. [3 points per state. -2 points per Hollywood Video or Blockbuster card]

A team member's umbilical cord, to be eaten by that team member. [96 points]

EDIT: jandaru, i do not know why the format of the page reminded me of the scavenger hunt.

ZOMG Reboot. Wow, that show was marvelous.

    So was Beast Wars.

Now when I look at them on youtube, the animation is slow and blocky and the plotlines move like molasses.

Beast Wars is 10 years old. Thinking about that fact makes me feel OLD.

Casual Eddy: The backgrounds of BW are pretty lame, but that's because of budget contraints, not just the older limitations. The characters themselves were modeled and animated quite awesomely.

Beast Wars' 10 year old animation still walks all over a lot of current CG shows. Just look at the most recent Transformers show, Transformers Cybertron. Now there's some stiff animation.

Plotlines like molasses? I guess my perspective was skewed by the fact Dragonball Z was on after Beast Wars and Reboot back in the day. Three shows with Ian Corlett voicing the hero in a row was a bit weird, too.

I remember thinking the animation in Beast Wars was amazing in comparison to the first two seasons of Reboot.

Wikipedia can be a disturbingly fertile source of nostalgia.

Take, for instance, this sickeningly long entry for Legends of the Hidden Temple, a mediocre Nickelodeon game show.

Sure, it brings back memories... but damn, some folks just haven't moved on.

I found an internet radio station full of old game chiptunes, making me all nostalgic.

They got some songs from the game Conspiracy that reminded me how amazing it was, especially when you're 8 years old and aren't that good at reading English. You could do so much wrong in that game that only got obvious later (it had an in game clock), but usually when something went wrong it was not because you forgot to get some item or the other, but because you failed to realise something, like that people lock a building when they leave it for example.

And you could do all kinds of dumb stuff, like [spoiler:7c2a84c152]get drunk on vodka and pass out,
    sollicit a hooker,
shoot people in the face,[/spoiler:7c2a84c152] all netting a satisfying 'game over' story, or an interesting experience. Especially the latter is very cool when you're stuck in a really hard adventure game like this and get frustrated with some NPC.

I was so bummed that they did not go on with the show. It was set to introduce an alien invader from outside the Solar System and was rumored to start a crossover with Gundam (or Macross or whatever it is, I suck at knowing anime for I never watch the stuff).

It is indeed very good. I'm not much a fan of the sheer amount of 'aliens aliens olol' in the first season, but overall the series is gold.

It's really kind of saddening that they can't even pull off that level of CG in the latest Transformers show, considering the damn thing is ten years old.
