really? the guy who screws you over and sells you out whenever he gets the chance and frankly doesn't give a damn about the galaxy further than the alliance controlling it is the collective choice for new council leader? He's much more of a terrible person than "space hitler" who everyone takes pleasure in killing every playthrough and he's not really a leader at all.

Honestly, how the hell did you find the gumption to get all of the Ally achievements? Just thinking about it sends chills down my spine.
Artifacts: Doing a cutscene for the artifact would have required rendering neanderthals and their clothing, art pieces not used anywhere else in the game. You only pull something like that if it's in the critpath, or if you have an artist with a crapton of time on his hands, which will never ever ever happen. It was a small fun thing that had to be snuck in under the wire due to constraints on both time and resources.
GDC:
It's definitely not our big publicity push, and I don't believe it's going to say much about the story. The people who care about the technical stuff may get some interesting tidbits -- things about how we're trying to improve the flow of our levels, both in terms of creating fun and unique combats and in terms of reducing the number of times you need to stand in an elevator.

Eh, it seems like they're using it correctly. They're talking about level design. From what I understand of the development of the original, it seems like an on-topic discussion. They had all kinds of great areas that weren't usable due to the AI and pathing issues, apparently. Maybe they had some kind of a breakthrough they feel other developers can benefit from?
All the general public knows is "OMGZ, ME2 INFO!!!"
So Bioware fails in AI and pathing? Color me surprised.
Edit: Don't look at me like that, I own several Bioware games and you can't tell me that you have played even one where you weren't left wondering why the fuck your party just did whatever it was that got them killed again.

Ehh. Taking an existing model, modifying the mesh, not that much time. Texturing it, okay, a day or two for one, and then simply few adjustments for all the actors in the scene (two or three of them) to not look identical.
You can always hire or outsource to amateurs for that kind of work if all the experts are working like it's Chinese Child Factory time. Hardly impossible. Granted, the time for setting the cutscene up could take a bit of work
But it not being on the priority list, yeah, I can see that as being the problem. All I'm saying in the first place is that stuff like that should be pretty high on the priority list, even if it's so remote.
But then we get into the whole "what's important, what isn't, time is money" and you wind up with mediocrity and text that you hit "ok" to.
I did like the text quite a lot though. Just that it shouldn't have been text, when it was that good.

Confirmed: Elevators to be replaced with HUGE flights of stairs. New Shepherd model will come with extra large calf muscles.

The only thing that bothers me about the artifact easter egg (cuz that's what it is, a glorified easter egg of sorts) is that you get the key component from the Asari consort. Have I mentioned that her speech to you was actually one of the weakest points in the game for me? "You have quite a gift, I'm honored." "I'd be honored." WHY? What is so honorable about what she told you? "You are who you are, but you won't be who you were." That's pretty much what it boils down to. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I FUCKING HATE PROPHECY in my fiction. It has only worked ONCE. And even then, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. (Hint: it rhymes with "Dune." No, wait...)
Anyways, the Asari consort was played up like she was actually going to matter. Then, after her speech she gives you this trinket. "What is it?" "Dunno, it just takes up space in my sparsely populated space-brothel. You take it."
Argh. I'll stop bitching. I'm just disappointed because I thought it was going to be so much more. It probably would have been better if the dialogue discussing it had been removed from her conversation file and you instead just found it somewhere. Like on an asteroid along with a Prothean data disc. It wouldn't have been such a let-down if that were the case.
Unless, of course, it is going to be explored further...

That's what I did actually - I played through twice a year ago. Put the game down, came back just now and played through 2 more times to finish everything up. I love the game but 4 times in a row would probably be too much for me.
The ally achievements really aren't bad, especially with the BDtS content as well. I even got Liara's by doing a total of 5 sidequests that weren't the BDtS content or on the Citadel (I had it before even leaving for the final planet). You don't have to bother with those crazy collection or 47 step sidequests.

I don't know, I am pretty excited about level design. The more varied combat areas there are, the better. Especially on side quest planets - prefab buildings and all.
Does being excited about level design make me lame?
taky has been pretty forthcoming about why the level designs for those outworld outposts were all the same: the cool ones they designed didn't work with the combat system once that was finalized, so they had to revert to the layout we saw time and again.
I'm excited to see what they've come up with for ME 2 now that they had a fully fleshed out system to work with.
I personally have no problem with the prefab buildings on most the planets.
I mean, would it be cost effective to build a unique outpost on every planet? Cost effective as far as in game reality, not the actual cost effectiveness of design

That does not mean that it is okay, just that we ended up stuck with it. I too am excited for varying combat locations in ME 2; Bring Down the Sky was a good step in that direction.
Every building and planet must be a unique snowflake!
They should be if I can shoot people in them! One of my main hopes is for more mass effect powers, or general combat abilities, interacting with the environment. I don't mean just exploding barrels or movable crates.

I expect there to be at least several different ship designs based on age and what it is designed for. The secret lab space vessel should not have the same layout as the evil doctor space vessel. In reality, I expect a large research base on the moon to have a different design than one on a planet instead of just being several regular buildings in a square. in reality, I expect even ones designed the same to look drastically different due to the people living in them. I should not see the same clean look with stupid boxes in a pirate base.
This is monumental news. My favorite part of the quote by the Bioware guy: "Mass Effect 2 is shaping up to be an unforgettable RPG-shooter experience, taking players on a non-stop roller-coaster ride filled with stunning plot twists and no-holds-barred action."
I love how he says that's what it's shaping up to be. "I mean we weren't sure what it was going to be when we started, we were thinking maybe an amusement park simulator? But I'll be damned if it's not shaping up to be a lot like the first one."
Yeah I know, I was all on the edge of my seat for the "Mass Effect 2 will be mediocre at best, but more likely much worse than the first one" announcment.

Games are a lot like clay - there's really only one predefined shape inside each piece so it's the designers' job to go through and realize that single possible thing a game can be.

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.
While officially announcing Mass Effect 2 -- a game we already knew to be in development for some time now -- to the world, publisher EA confirmed the franchise's continuation on the Xbox 360 and PC platforms, while staying mum on PS3. Notably, Matt Atwood of BioWare told CVG last month, "I believe we'll be Xbox 360 exclusive for at least a short period of time. We're still working out the details on that, but we've had a great relationship with Microsoft and done very well."
Although EA stated Mass Effect 2 would be destined for multiple platforms, the lack of a PS3 announcement is rather disconcerting. That's BioWare and Valve (both EA-published developers, mind you) omitting certain major titles on the PlayStation 3. Why no love for Sony?
We've put in word to BioWare and EA for comment, and, you know, just to make sure. We'll update this post as the news comes in. In the meantime, why not check out that sizzlin' hot teaser trailer after the break!
UPDATE: We spoke with Heather Rabatich at BioWare this afternoon who said, "We have no comment beyond the platforms we've announced it for." That's not a confirmation or a denial of it coming to PS3. The jury is apparently still out on that possibility.
Sounds like a possible six month-to-a-year delay (maybe more) for a possible PS3 version.

For Mass Effect 2 can we have team members that make effective use of cover?
Interesting trivia: In the military one is taught not to shoot over cover, but instead around the side of it. Doing that helps protect your most important bits from damage (head, neck, and upper chest)
