Sorry, didn't mean you specifically. You have a point about the shoddy physics of the Mako. But when people complain about how it literally controls, that's where I cover my ears and start going "NAAAAAAH-NAAAAAAH-NAAAAAAH-NAAAAAAH-NAAAAAAH-I'M NOT LISTENIIIIIIIIIIIIING!"
Yeah, driving the Mako is easier that the Warthog ive always found. The only problem is it gets boring. But thats what cannons and thrusters are for right? Entertainment!
I think it's possible to want to improve our combat without putting a bullet into our story. I don't think any department on the project is going, "You know, in this game, we want to be worse than we were last time."
I like big emotional choices and gut-punch moments of shock and horror and funny little side comments. I also like blowing up tons of bad guys. Right now, things are moving in a really good direction on the project, and I can't wait for us to show more of it.
Come now, we all know about your deep-rooted desire to abandon your story-writing duties and blaze new trails in the animation department.

Quick Question: How many people bought it on 360, then on PC?
Yet another reason to stagger back the PC release. :P
I did, but only after they cut the price in half. Doesn't hurt your point though.
What kind of annoyed me:
- Steam gets Mass Effect in December, sells it for $25 on a double discount sale. Awesome. I buy it.
- A month later, Steam reduces the price of ME to $20, from $30. Ok, no big deal, it's $5.
- A month after that, Bioware announces the Mass Effect Special Edition, with the DVD and cool extras and stuff. For $20.
Regarding elevators: I'd like one really, really long elevator in ME2; a gigantic moving gun battle as two forces descend into the bowels of some god forsaken hell hole. Something badass enough to wash the figurative taste out of my mouth from all those boring "stand around and do nothing" rides in ME1.
Regarding the Mako: it drove fairly well at speed (and was great fun on reasonably flat terrain), but lean just a little too hard left or right, especially while traversing rough terrain, and suddenly you're flying and bounding about. Sure, you can sometimes avoid part of the problem by carefully going around obstacles, but I'm in a fucking tank, where's the fun in going around things? The other problem was trying to mountaineer around some of the random planets. It often seemed faster to go up and over a given range (or ranges) of mountains, only to hit near the top and find that you couldn't quite manage to get over that last 20 yards. This led to either shifting side to side to find a place where you could get the necessary traction, or just picking a new route altogether. While I don't mind rewarding players for forethought and choosing the correct approach, it just broke the game's momentum for me. Instead of being a badass in a tank, I felt more like some old lady that got stuck in a snowbank, rocking side to side in the hopes of dislodging myself from the quagmire I was stuck in.

What's the difference between the 360 and the PC versions? Is it worth buying on PC, if I've already beaten (but don't own) it on 360?
Probably not. As far as I understand, the Mako controls a bit better (mouse controls turret tracking), and there's always the standard benefits of playing a shooter with KBAM, but on the whole it's not like that element is badly controlled on the console side. There's also the ability to assign hotkeys to powers so that they can be instantly used instead of from the menu.
IIRC they also changed some of the ice planets so that visibility was a bit better.
All in all, a few changes, none of them really major. One major benefit for me personally is the fact that I don't need to grind up achievements on a lost savegame, I can just cheat those in.

Those were the problems I had with it too. The only other thing I want to add is that the jump jets should have always pushed you straight up.
When I'm trying to climb a mountain, I want the jets to help me get over obstacles. Not launch me off the side of the mountain.

Do this, but have the first 20 seconds of the ride be like any other ME1 Elevator. Everyone gets on, stands there locked in place, casual conversation starts up, then OH SHITS THEY'RE SHOOTING AT ME CUE THE MUSIC RETURN CONTROL FIRE FIRE FIRE!
Just have the most epic, incredibly bombastic battle music
So Ride of the Valkyries?
Hell, the opening Mass Effect theme is pretty badass. Have that start simple and build up to a rousing explosion of music through the course of this elevator scene. I'd be down for that.
Why do you even need the Mako, all it was used for was travelling across vast, empty expanses to find unimportant things or follow long linear paths. Yeah it stopped all the important things being 10 feet away from each other but other than that it was pretty pointless.

I think your logic is a bit flawed. Any game is just a sequence of events with spaces in-between. I guess the mako was just meant to be more fun than it turned out to be, so if they can make it more fun (personally, I enjoyed it) for ME2, that'll be fine.

My logic is fine. These spaces between areas were extended massively to accomodate the Mako. It made the important areas seem less isolated to each other but Id take a quick jump screen to driving the Mako. The big temple for instance, theres one HUGE driving sequence that has you taking on single unit enemies in a giant tank, it served no purpose and wasn't fun. The Mako can be gone forever.

because some planets are too harsh to survive more than a few minutes exposure.
If you don't get back in the Mako quickly enough, you die.
Why do you need the warthog in Halo? All you do is drive it from one place to another and shoot some dudes on the way, sometimes there aren't even dudes to shoot.
Why even have combat in Mass Effect, all it does is interrupt the story.
I will say this - I knew there was a cannon on the Mako, but was most of the way through the first playthrough before I realized you can zoom the targeting reticule way in by holding down LT and clicking RS.
It controlled technically fine. It was the Warthog without any weight to it. I just hope they add some weight to it.
The mako actually weighed more than the entire planet it was driving on did in ME1, if not than the sun does. I assure you, we added some weight to it.. That said, next time, we can work on making it weigh the same as two suns

I think the only changes i would make are make it not turn so sharply, and make the jets point down regardless of the Mako's position. You see the jets aimed straight down in the drop sequence while the Mako is at an angle, but you can't use them that way while you're driving. I just don't really see how the jets are useful the way they are, except for when the Mako is completely flat.
They're useful because they're incredibly fun. On the PC, at least, driving the Mako around was a gleeful experience. I visited every single planet just to tool around in the Mako on the crazy jagged terrain.
Yeah, it would've been very nice to be able to burn the jets once in a while as a little boost to scoot over some of the higher / steeper mountain peaks in the game. If not in a "go straight up with a little forward push" way, than perhaps as a way to force yourself up and over obstacles that the tires couldn't pull you over on their own. The "jump" itself was rarely useful in my playthroughs, as unless it was done on relatively flat terrain, it more often than not just sent me careening off whatever it was I was trying to climb at the time.
Of course, if the terrain were adjusted such that there were fewer such massive inclines to surmount, it wouldn't be much of an issue either way. I just found the Mako's ability to "jump" to be somewhat bafflingly useless in most cases.
Well, to be fair, I did eventually start using them as a manner of breaking falls once I was playing on hardcore, but it's a TANK that can JUMP! Why just have a little air cushion when I could be leaping from peak to peak? City of Heroes "Super Jump" style.

Wouldn't a hover tank be sent flying backwards every time the cannon was used?
They have the technology to build a hover tank but didn't anticipate this incredibly basic law of physics that people will have known for a thousand years by that time?
Yeah you're right. Massive design flaw right there.:|

More important than the weight of the Mako, making the terrain a bit less jagged and more easily navigable by the thing would go a long way to reducing complaints.
I would assume that a powerful hovercraft would have directional thrust able to overcome forces applied to the vehicle, lest an errant breeze knock you off course.

Not even that. Just make the mini map display the topographical full size version. So I'm not going in a direct straight line to objectives instead of following the massively obviously clear cut flat terrain path leading there just to the left.
We originally had the mako able to thrust left/right/front/back by player control (I think you can actually see a quick clip of it in some of the old X06 or E3 or somesuch footage). Unfortunately, that made it even more awkward to control, as it had a tendency to do things like start the mako flipping rapidly in the air if you got too crazy, as well as being more things to polish and keep from breaking Having the thumbsticks control the camera, orientation, cannon turret and thrusters was a bit much.

A hover tank that talks in an English accent.
Mako: Sir, did you know that the right bumper triggers my cannon.
Shepard: BY JOVE!
Wouldn't a hover tank be sent flying backwards every time the cannon was used?
Just as Saren brought Anderson to Camala, we bring troops to the front.
I think someone might be a little unfamiliar with the idea of science fiction.
That's what eezo is for.
Someone didn't read the Codex
Just have an equally powerful cannon pointing in the opposite direction that shoots at the exact same time.
Obviously this is not the sort of vehicle you'd want to lead a charging army with.
