The thing about the Mako thrusters is that they were only occasionally useful when jumping off the side of a sheer cliff. Except that was only if you wanted to land with a bit of flair. In most cases, you could just take the (minor) damage and repair if desired. But they would have been infinitely more useful in all the situations where players would attempt to climb a clifside, make it nearly to the top, and then lose momentum and fall down to the bottom.
Strictly speaking, the flatland driving wasn't too bad. But it was awfully easy to start wildly swerving back and forth if the Mako hit some uneven terrain. A little less sensitivity on an analog stick capable of 360 degrees of input would be nice.
Why do you even need the Mako, all it was used for was travelling across vast, empty expanses to find unimportant things or follow long linear paths. Yeah it stopped all the important things being 10 feet away from each other but other than that it was pretty pointless.
because some planets are too harsh to survive more than a few minutes exposure.
If you don't get back in the Mako quickly enough, you die.
Unless you have the safety yellow armour equipped to one of your squad members. I think there's one or two high hazard planets that still require the Mako, though.
We originally had the mako able to thrust left/right/front/back by player control (I think you can actually see a quick clip of it in some of the old X06 or E3 or somesuch footage). Unfortunately, that made it even more awkward to control, as it had a tendency to do things like start the mako flipping rapidly in the air if you got too crazy, as well as being more things to polish and keep from breaking Having the thumbsticks control the camera, orientation, cannon turret and thrusters was a bit much.
What happened with this game? Those powers and guns look so much better. Incineration? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE YOU BUTCHERS?! Where is the superior Galaxy Map? Those quests/dialogues? That combat?
Gawd. You could control everyone KOTOR style. I forgot just how much you cut out.
I think you've largely illustrated why I tend to avoid pre-release stuff on a game I'm interested in.
Things change, that's just part of the design process. What they may have had to cut makes room for essential polishing, and influences what might be seen in a sequel.

Of course I'm in large percentage sarcastic when I dramatize like that, obviously they had to build _the rest of the game_ and shit goes out for various different reasons (which I know nothing about because I'm not working for them) that I can't even begin to imagine, but being on the outside, it's pretty fun (read:annoying as fuck) to poke, because well, it was there, it was awesome, and for the final version, it was missing.
Wow, I hadn't seen some of that stuff before. I've resisted this line of thinking until now, but I could have done with one or two fewer side planets to have things like the map looking that polished and some of those fancy camera angles and moves. I'm with you subedii, if I'm really interested in a game then I totally duck pre-release info because inevitably it leads to confusion or pain.

Oh man, that Galaxy Map was awesome, I want that in ME2. Also it seemed they had a little more destructible environments before too.

Wouldn't a hover tank be sent flying backwards every time the cannon was used?
They have the technology to build a hover tank but didn't anticipate this incredibly basic law of physics that people will have known for a thousand years by that time?
Yeah you're right. Massive design flaw right there.:|
Looking at those vids, the tracer rounds and glow effect on the grenade looked really nice. I wonder why they removed them? Also, I like the more minimalist visual style of the final Galaxy Map a little better, but that early version's camera angles and lack of load times are pretty tasty.
Was the original galaxy map CGI then? If they had it working, why change. It was excellent, much more fluid, less repetitive. Perhaps the amount of content prevented such an implementation but I hope they change it for the sequel.
I'd like to see improvements in ME2 along the lines of things we saw earlier in the first game's development that didn't make it in (or things we haven't even seen but that would make the game more entertaining, immersive, or easy to control), but I'm glad that Bioware didn't try to overdo everything and end up making the game less polished. Developing Mass Effect on multiple platforms didn't force them to drop features- the need for the game to be feasible, playable, and enjoyable within a deadline did.

I'd prefer less polish, actually. I mean, ME crashed a bunch at the galaxy map for me, but other than that it was rock solid. I would totally have tolerated some crashing during combat or something if it had been even better. I mean, crashing can be patched out later but a bad game is bad forever. Not that ME is bad, but the concept still applies.
You know what I'd like to see as a potential 'fix' to the galaxy map? If I press the B button, that instead of dumping me back to the CiC, it just goes back one on the map. X for back and B for exit just doesn't make a lot of sense.

YES! I thought I was the only one with this problem, I have no idea how many times I exited the galaxy map without meaning to. But it was a lot.

NO! Bad Tycho!
Not that I don't understand where you're coming from, but my experience is that a simple concept that's well implemented and polished is FAR preferable (like 90% or the time maybe) to a great concept that was poorly implemented.
That, and I really don't want devs to get into the habit of "implement now, fix later". That's far too common a practice as it is, and Mass Effect was already giving me regular enough hard crashes.

Abso-fuckin-lutely! It pissed me off every damn time I did exactly that - but hitting B to "back up" just seemed intuitive. I guess it's just us though, since Bioware didn't see it that way.

I'm with you two as well.
On the bright side, at least you didn't have to take an elevator to get to the galaxy map.
Shepard will be getting a much larger ship for Mass Effect 2, with each crew member having their own floor, traversable only by elevator.
He doesn't even have a ship in ME3.
He just rides million lightyear long elevators between planets.
Wasn't that an Arthur C. Clarke idea? Elevators to space stations or something like that?
Space Elevator, yes. Of course, there are substantial technical hurdles to such a concept, not the least of which would be having a material that could survive the sheer torsional forces at work. IIRC the actual cable itself probably wouldn't be a straight line either, more circling the planet as it gets farther away.
EDIT: Although according to wikipedia he only popularised the idea.

FUCKING A RIGHT!
Man, I hated when I did that! Everytime I would see the black screen as it went back, I would curse the entire time till the galaxy map loaded back up. I don't know why, but that may have been my biggest pet peeve with the game! Which goes to show how much I loved it since that's such a small gripe.

And regarding Darkwarrior's logic: Man, why do they have cars in GTA, all they do is get in the way of the shooting.

You got me to hunt for it, and then I remembered that on the Gametrailers HD review, I got the first comment inFunny stuff.
Also god, watching these now grates the heart.

I think this is the enhanced Mako

Thats the stupidest reasoning I've heard this week.
They were making a console game and their original goals were too much for console gamers and they were forced to dumb the game down.
I fixed that for you.
I hope that didn't take long to figure out...

Having more buttons really changes things like the galaxy map they showed above?
Granted, I could see your case with the Mako...
