I think so, but their natural lifespans are very long iirc. Lemme look in the raws.
edit: yeah they live between 150 and 170 years.
edit 2: although I guess death from old age might not actually be implemented?
Considering all that is implemented, I can't see why that wouldn't be. On the other hand what are the chances of having a dwarf live that long, not to mention an entire fortress existing that long?
Has anyone ever had a fortress go for the 60+ years it would take for dwarves to start dying of old age? What's the longest running for out there?
With the threats of carp, goblins and elephants. I'm surprised if a dwarf can live more than 3 years.
The most common threat I've faced so far? Going into a mood and demanding shit we don't have access to at all. So they starve or commit suicide. I guess these dwarves are like lemmings.
You haven't had one go apeshit and start randomly killing other dwarves in a berserker rage that takes 5 other dwarves to take down because he couldn't find some little gem?

Not for that specific reason.
Actually, there was one, but I locked him in his room before he left it and setup my army outside, and when he came out, he only injured one before dying.

also. my fort is doing okay, but i cannot for the life of me find any rough gems at all. theres a lava pipe in the map, but the only thing i ever hit is aluminum or copper. and of course the traders dont give me rough gems.
On the bright side, i do have a rather hilarious way to kill my invaders now. i created a series of bridges that drop the unsuspecting raiders down a 10Z+ drop. last time, i dropped 6 goblins and their dwarf leader down the pit, and lo and behold, an axe goblin survived! so he trudges up 10 flights of stairs with yellow everything, and attempts to escape over the bridges He even survived that fall too! but he didn't make it past the hammerdwarf.
So I built a practice catapult and put it on Fire at Will, came back a year or so later and I have a legendary Siege Operator. Whats a decent plac to put siege weaponry? I was thinking up on a tower but it seems a bit risky, what with the operators being civvies who flee at the first sign of danger. I have an L shaped entrance with a drawbridge at the corner. Can catapults fire underground in a tunnel?
Also, any way to get my Siege Engineer skill up easily? I lack wood so can't really just spam build componants

Catapults suck balls as effective weapons. The best setup for siege weapons is to place a ballista or two at the back of a loooooong hallway in your entrance, then put a wall with fortifications between the opening and the ballista.
The problem is that siege operators are civilians and will flee if an enemy gets close to them.
My hunter... now I didn't see what happened... But my hunter seems to have shot several musk oxen with his crossbow... and ran away from them... led them into his bedroom.
He just lead a train of ox into his bedroom.

If they run out of bolts, then they try to beat animals to death with the crossbow. I think it uses the hammer skill.

May I refer you to the incident of the dwarf drowning to death in a single tile of water of puddle nothing?
Still though.
This game, and the stories I hear you guys say, make me laugh so fucking hard that I can't get mad at this game.
Especially after I read up on the wiki last night about Thermonuclear catsplotions, my god I was literally in agonizing pain because I just could not stop laughing long enough to breath.
I went through quite a few Downs syndrome hunters before my current ass-kicker. He's now a legendary marksdwarf and legendary ambusher. The outdoors are perpetually barren of wildlife, as soon as something spawns he muderizes it.
Funny story, he once got jumped by a goblin ambush. I was like "fuck, there goes the one hunter who was worth a crap". Oh no. It was like he was wielding a machine gun, in as many action steps he mowed down 8 goblins, one right after the other.
So I was going back and forth between DF and general forum bumming when I suddenly say the message, "Stray Horse(Tame) has burned to death".
I try to find out what the Hell has happened when I notice that half of the map is on fire and it's quickly spreading. I guess my horse wanted to go start some stuff with some Fire Imps and now the entire ecosystem has to pay for it.
Everyone is just chilling out inside until the fire calms down, but man, it's taking out everything.

So I was thinking about my hermitage/monastery idea... where each "primary" dwarf is essentially locked into a cell permanently (with a staff of "secondary" dwarfs, non-hermits, to haul things between cells, trade depot, etc.)
Some of y'all suggested a "garbage" pit above and below to move goods through the cell... which seems okay but for two problems, I think. First, you can't control what gets dumped specifically into each cell. Second, you can't control which garbage dump gets used. I suspect well placed/spaced stockpiles and garbage zones might alleviate some of that... but I had another idea.
Check this image:
This shows very roughly what one cell would look like. In the main cell is an eating area, sleeping area, meditation area, and then the workshop. Alongside the workshop would be an input stockpile (for raw materials for whatever kind of workshop it is), and an output stockpile (for generated goods). These could actually be one or a few stockpiles, depending on what is needed.
Similarly, there might be a food/drink stockpile near the eating area to hold a small supply of consumables.
Now, above and below the main cell are four "holding" areas; basically, the two above are input holding areas and have stockpiles for food, drink, raw materials... basically anything needing to get into the cell. The left and right holding areas are identical. The output holding areas below are similar, but for outgoing goods.
The doors on each holding area are labeled A and B, which correspond to pressure plates A and B in a tunnel along the right side. The idea is that one of the haulers would grab his pet dog (assigned to the hauler so it's always close by), and he drops the dog into an animal pit above (which allows much more direct control than a garbage zone). The dog immediately runs out to rejoin his master and runs over both pressure plates, locking and unlocking doors.
That way, there is always an input holding area that the haulers can access while the hermit dwarf has access to the alternate input holding area, and likewise for the output holding areas.
Having never really played with pressure plates and animals in this way, I'm not sure whether this would work or not. Although, I suppose in fact, the pressure plates could be replaced with two levers, or even some water-based mechanism...
Thoughts?
EDIT: Right away, one of my thoughts is that the hermit would just start working from the input holding stockpile rather than moving everything inside first... which would make it difficult to swap holding areas, as the hermit might "escape", so to speak.
My obsidian production has run into a slight snag, in that I have now drained two lakes to provide water for it and will probably drain a third soon. I think it needs an underground reservoir that is protected from evaporation.

Can't you drain a couple lakes into an underground mine, then floor over the draind ponds?

The ponds need to be open to catch rain water, I would assume.

Okay.
Then.
Dig to the ponds, before breaking in, install a floodgate and the lever to activate it safely away.
Then, dig out a channel so the water floods through the mine when the gate is opened, into your reservoir below, when thats full, close the gate.
That way you have the pond able to refill when it rains, that you can open the flood gate to top off a non-evaporable source of water underground?

and to think, 2 days ago I couldn't even figure out how to do more than watch my dwarves at the start of the game mill around doing nothing as they slowly ate their food reserves and died

Levers and pressure plates don't just toggle the status of whatever they're linked to, they send specific "on" and "off" signals. If you hooked your doors directly to plates like that, they'd both be shut most of the time, then as the dog ran across the plates each set of doors would open briefly then close in turn.
However, I've read that gear assemblies are an exception and will toggle every time they get a response from a lever or plate. If that's true (I haven't tried it) you could set up a system with plate-toggleable gears driving pumps that dump water onto other plates in such a way as to create the desired effect.

So... can you not make armor out of gold? I finally ran out of iron so making steel plate mail for trading isn't going to work anymore. I figured masterfully crafted gold armor would fetch a fair price. Sure its no good to stave off raving goblin hordes, but it sure would look fine on an Elven prince.
Where the heck are the rock mugs on the trade screen? Yeah I know they're cheap but I have so much goddamn rock I need to offload it somehow. They're all in bins, but I can't find what category they're under.
