Could anyone suggest a few alternative drinks for a guy who just isn't a huge fan of the taste of beer? I'm somewhat fond of fruit flavoured vodka premixes, but frankly I'd rather just drink beer than have people make the usual comments about a 20 year old straight male drinking colourful fruity drinks. Bonus points for anything that comes premixed and is common here in Australia.
Try Amaretto. The mix I like is a 1:1 mix of Amaretto and light cream or milk(usually 1 to 2 oz of each). You can also sprinkle a little bit of powered chocolate/cocoa on top. I have heard this be called an Afterwork Amaretto, but I don't know if thats the real name or not.

You really can't go wrong with rum and coke. Next time you're at a decent bar try out a Manhattan, too. Definitely isn't a tutti fruiti type drink but you might like it. It is definitely a gentleman's drink.

just embrace your fruitiness. wear a Hawaiian shirt at all times. Then nobody will question you about drinking mai tai's, zombies, hurricanes, etc.... To pull this off just start with a summery themed party, make everyone wear their beach gear. And now you'd be nearly spill resistant also!
oh and avoid that pre-mixed garbage. every one of those pre-mixed items you can purchase is far inferior than you learning how to mix your own drinks to your own taste.
If the guy's goal is to avoid getting shit from his friends, Bloody Marys, Tom Collins/Vodka Collins, Long Island iced tea, and especially Amaretto are all horrible, horrible suggestions.
Screwdrivers, on the other hand, are a good suggestion. Kamikazes might be worth a try. You can probably get away with hard lemonade during the summer months. If you're a coffee drinker, Black Russians might hit the spot. If you've only had light-colored beers, try a dark beer (Guinness Extra Stout should be easy enough to come by anywhere), the taste and texture are much different. Consider hard cider as a beer alternative.
Last time I tried to order one in a bar in Canada, the girl at the counter stared at me like a deer caught in headlights, but luckily her coworker came to the rescue. I don't know how well known this drink is in Australia though.
If you're looking for sweet, try whiskey and coke. Just don't use expensive Scottish whiskey to mix it, as it kills a Scotsman everytime you do.

Jagerbombs
Also, White Russians, Big Lebowski made them okay
Gin and tonic. Fuck what they say, this is not a "girl's drink" (such a stupid concept anyways).
Edit: Hi5 Kal.
I have to agree with this. Gin and tonics are the manliest of manly drinks. They were made to keep pirates healthy, and they get mentioned in a song about being a fucking rock star.

While this sounds delicious and I would drink the shit out of it, I would totally give someone shit for drinking a girly drink if I saw them drinking this.
Whiskey sours and screwdrivers are my go to "manly" drinks when I want something other than beer. Also, straight shots of pretty much any hard liquor, but obviously you can't just knock those back constantly all evening like a beer or sip a few of them throughout the evening.
Also, as has been suggested, try some other types of beers. I really like red and wheat beers. Go pick up a 6 pack of Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat. Fucking excellent stuff.
Screwdrivers are a good standby if there's nothing else, there's usually always vodka and orange. Whiskey sours are delicious, and I'm not even really a huge fan of whiskey. White russians are also delicious. These were all previously mentioned, but they could stand to be repeated.
If the guy's goal is to avoid getting shit from his friends, Bloody Marys, Tom Collins/Vodka Collins, Long Island iced tea, and especially Amaretto are all horrible, horrible suggestions.
Well, it sounded more like the OP was concerned with how the drink looked rather than how much hair it puts on his eChest. I suggest Amaretto because he apparently likes fruit flavored drinks, and that it is not bright and colorful which seemed to be his main concern.

Rent, you should totally visit Belgium someday. They have so many tasty dark beers, it's glorious.
These however, are the best and manliest of them all:
They have 4 variants, blond, brown, tripple and red. All very tasty.

Things I enjoy drinking:
Bourbon on the rocks
White Russians
Dirty Martinis
Vodka & Soda
Gin & Tonic
Seven & 7
I'm a fan of Southern Comfort and Coke, but I've been getting on the Captain Morgan's spiced rum lately (you might not be able to find this at Safeway/IGA/Coles liquor sections, and doesn't come premixed).
As far as fruit/vodka mixes go, I'd go for the smirnoff mixes (if you don't already). They're generally more discrete with regards to colour and bottle shape, and while cruisers and similar drinks make me feel ill (too sugary) these go down quite well indeed.
Generally, anything with whiskey will do the trick. Whiskey sours are good when made right. Jack and coke is always a good one too.
How manly do you want? You could go with a three wisemen, and that will put hair in places you never knew could have hair. Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, and Jose Cuervo, all in one glass. Your tongue will have a ZZ-Top style beard when you're done.

Martinis.
If you'd like a litte fruit, a lemon martini can be mainly, depending on how they make it.
you didn't say how extensive your beer experience is. i know it took me a long time to find beer(s) i actually enjoyed the taste of. i admittedly don't have a lot of experience with european/asian beers, but i can count on one hand the number of beers that i "like" the taste of (corona, yuengling, & bitburger - and finding the latter two is hit or miss here in florida). so you might want to browse a bit more before writing off beer entirely.
that said, i'll have to agree with what's already been said, for the most part. whiskey & coke, rum & coke, gin & tonic - all good choices. my addition to that list would be vodka & cranberry juice.
As far as non mixed drinks I am going to second the hard cider suggestion. Both my roommate and I cannot stand the taste of any beers but really like hard ciders. We generally get Woodchuck and it is nice for a cold drink at the end of the day that a whiskey sour or other mixed drink can't really work for.
lots of whiskey suggestions here, but I've been yet to see whiskey and gingerale. by far my favorite of the whiskey mixing options with soda.
Vodka and cranberry is always great, but I can't ever get enough of that glorious bitter berry.
I love just nearly all gin drinks with the exception of gin and tonic.....I know I'm horrible for that. Gotta love the Tom Collins though. avoid the collins mixes though as most suck. make your own.
if you really need to show off your faux-manliness than get one of those vodkas with a scorpion in the bottle or something. Or some Vietnamese snake wine where they have a freaking python in the bottle, ok those are very hard to obtain without a trip overseas, but a great bottle to have sitting like a fucking sentinel over your liquor cabinet.
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Beer and my tastebuds don't get along for years and years now. I still occasionally try and still hate it. Why bother force yourself to learn to like it when there are so many other good drinks out there. Same deal with bananas, my palette just does not agree and no amount of trying and forcing will change that. They do say taste buds change over time so it is always a good idea to go back and try from time to time.

yeah i feel most people write beer off after drinking the normal macro (bud, miller, coors, etc)
but then again, a lot of people don't have access to the good stuff either, Franziskaner, Hoegaarden, Brooklyn (specifically winter!!), Rogue, Flying Dog, Dogfish Head, Wailing Wench, etc..hell, even Blue Moon is hard to find in places I hear.....if you're more into fruity tasting drinks though i would suggest looking for Blue Moon
as for mixed drinks..i think everything has been said...rum and coke (although i prefer rum and ginger ale, meh), gin and tonic, etc etc
Before I discovered Guinness I used to drink Ciders. I would think they would be available in Aust. and it has about the same alcohol content as a standard beer would, so you and whoever else you are drinking with can be at the same pace.
If you are going to mix whiskey(scotch) make sure its blended. If you mix single malt with anything but ice (optional) you revoke all manhood of the drink.
Whoa, thanks for all the suggestions so far. It makes me think I should have made this thread a long time ago.
I'll give a few dark beers a go, since out of the 15-20 or so brews I've tried most have been paler types. As for everything else, keep them coming, I'm going to need to make myself a 2009 sampling list or something...
If there is anything similar to the Flying Saucer a Heartland Brewery go there.
I know you're in Austrailia but the idea is the same. Places that sell local beers and some imports will open you up to beers outside the mainstream Budweiser garbage. I'm an Indy whore when it comes to beer.

I'm about a 15 minute drive from a place in Belgium called 'de bierschuur'. It looks a bit like a huge church, except filled with all imaginable kinds of beer, which makes it that much better than church.

A warning about white russians
You can only have like, two of them in a row before it starts getting too sweet and you need something more bitter to cleanse the palate
My drinking is normally
Guinness -> WR -> Jagerbomb -> WR -> Guinness again
he's right about that. i once made the mistake of drinking an entire jug of the pre-mix kahlua white russian (the big one) one new year's eve. 3 other people said they'd never had it and would try it when we were at the store, low and behold no one wanted any when we commenced the imbibing.
at least the cream eased the burning sensation while i was throwing up.

vodka tonic
scotch on the rocks
jagerbomb
more mixed drinks that are a bit more than soda and liquor:
caesar
bloody mary
tom collins
manhattan
rob roy
long island iced tea
Vodka, orange juice, TA-DA!
It's a perfectly respectable drink.
Edit: Single malt only too.
