    First post?

Edit: Given the staves I've seen in PTR loot tables it seems like Blizzard has still not realized how to make a stave useful in comparison to a 1H spell damage sword and a spell damage offhand.

My understanding was that they were going to try and make staves a reasonable alternative to a 1H sword / offhand or a mace / offhand or an anything / offhand.

Everyone note that 'blue dotting' or 'first posting' or any combination or similarity is still dumb still against the rules and will still get you a facefull of pain.

Did my first legit instances on my mage tonight, UB and SP. I have to say I'm really enjoying the class and I'm glad I rerolled.

Only 3 more levels till northrend. Weee. Question though. What kind of dps is expected at the mid 60s for really any class? I was sitting at around 500 for boss fights during both runs.

I lured people to come to Heroic Magister's with just saying the pet and mount drop there. But it's quite curious that I had to run with them into normal first

I tried to do AQ20 and AQ 40 with a pug tonight. We had 15 level 80s. We wiped once in AQ 20 and twice in AQ40 before the main tank left the group.

    I usually don't pug. But I thought "It's AQ 40, even a PUG can survive AQ 40!"

    I was wrong.

I could really easily see wiping in AQ40....but AQ20? That place is ridiculously easy. The only remotely tricky boss at 80 is the one where you've got to kill the leeches or whatever before they instantly kill whoever is on that pedestal. You must have had some truly shitty puggers.

Reminds me of a BWL pug I did once. The geniuses who formed the raid didn't think to actually get a goddamn tank. They tried to dps down Razergore during the egg phase. Then, in the suppression room, the rogues didn't bother to even deactivate the traps. I ran out on them during the suppression room and don't regret it.

I did a pug aq40 the other night with 15 or so level 80's and 5 or so people ranging from 60-75. With the exception of the Twin. Emps, when it became pretty apparent to anybody that keeping them apart was a necessity, we pretty much zerged everything.

Went into a big room with a warrior (the rest of the raid had gone the other direction) and saw it was empty, then we saw something coming towards us underground

    [Me] This can't be good

Cthun, I've no idea on the fight. All I got told, was to not stand in front, or behind, and that there were tentacles.

True, I'd done aq40 up to a point in vanilla (up to the Nature resistance boss), and some others had as well, but I don't quite understand how you can't just blag it, if you've got some semi-competent people.

I had one level 80 DK bitch at me for not healing him, as he died on those bug packs that explode and send you into the air, but that was about it.

Holy shit more GSIII / GSIV players!

I had a Rogue on there, when the new hardcap of 100 went in, I got him to I believe level 97 or so, and ended up selling the character for $1,500.00 when I finally made the switch to Warcraft.

But yeah, a game like Gemstone could never be fully re-invented in a graphical mmo, but god damn if they could, it would be the best game ever. Except for the price of course, I'll never play $35.00 a month to play a fucking text based game ever again.

And I used to be one of the Rogue's who hung out in the East Tower picking boxes. Do you remember Porcell? That was probably the Rogue who stole from you, that guy was a huge deal when I was playing.

But yeah, I played Slaide from 1998 to about 2002 or 2003. I played consistently that entire time, and I only played that one character.

After all those years, I only hit level 97. There were several who were hardcapped at 100. There was one warrior, who was so over the cap before the conversion (I think he was level 350 before the hardcap), that when he was knocked to level 100, he had so many points to spend on skills he had basically almost every single skill in the game maxed out.

For those of you who have no idea what the fuck i'm talking about, in Gemstone, you can train in any skill in the game if you really want it, but your class determines how many points it will cost you. So for a Rogue, stealth would cost like 3 physical and 1 mental, but for a Warrior it would cost like 15 physical and 10 mental or something equally ridiculous, so training in anything outside your class role was pretty much a horrible idea.

Anyways, I could talk for hours about Gemstone, I think the coolest thing about that game was the small community. The entire game was on one server, so everyone knew everyone. And the popular guys were like people you actually interacted with every day, like that Warrior, I actually knew him pretty well.

Sadly, his name? Yeah, it was Drizzsdt.

I actually never played after the GS4 change over actually happened. I remembered the discussion involving it somewhat at the time, but like everything that happened with the GMs in that game, I knew it would be forever before it actually happened, and I was long since done with the game by the time it finally came about.

Surely there's no way there was anyone up to level 350 before the 100 hard cap? I *think* by the time I quit there were people around 170, but the way everything worked, it got to be virtually impossible to level because mobs just weren't high enough to give experience until new areas/higher level enemies were added.

In fact, as I recall, typically Empaths were the first to break the 'soft-cap' because healing wounds didn't really have the same method of degraded experience so they were able to get exp for longer after fighting classes had reached their limits.

And yeah, I *know* I was familiar with Drizzsdt, I think virtually everyone was, he was always one of the highest leveled guys around. Didn't know him personally though. I don't *think* Porcell was the jackass I got involved with, but I recognize the name, Halfling Rogue as I recall... I think I just saw him around a lot.

The shit Simu got away with for a text-based MUD just wouldn't fly today (even though they still do it I believe, though they don't have *nearly* the consumer base they used to), especially not in the MMO market. I'm talking their pricing plans. It really makes me curious just what's going to happen with Hero's Journey if it ever even comes about. They've been working on it for *so* long, it really seems like they'll need to get some money back, but I doubt they'll be able to afford to charge any more than what seems to be the MMO standard of $15 a month.

I still don't *mind* the idea of text-based MUDs, though I'm thinking one that adopted a WoW-style of quest based leveling could be really intriguing, as opposed to the constant monster grinding they're known for.

My interest in WoW has waned again, I've done almost everything I care to do with one character, have another heroic'd out, and a third at 80 that I don't really know what to do with. I have 3 other 70+ characters that I could screw around with, and honestly, was *somewhat* tempted to bring my Protadin to 80 and get to tanking again, especially with the changes upcoming in 3.1 for Prot. But eh, I don't know, it still doesn't seem that interesting of a prospect.

I have no idea what you're talking about...

He's keeping a conversation from the last thread.

So I was pretty happy, we got a 10man OS going last night and did Sarth+1. While this isn't a major accomplishment to other peoples Glory of the Raider and such, I was pretty proud of everyone.

??: We wiped like 6 times to maly. We had to bring a few diff people because some of them were saved. Had a shammy come into group saying "I know fight I dont need to be in vent".
He refused to drop BL, took like 45 seconds to get into a magic shield, and was pretty low on healing charts all things considered.

I think I'm going to go ret for this new guild (4/10 spots in OS were the guild). Its good and bad, because I'll be able to build both sets and hopefully help getting them/me achievements. But I dont really like ret.
Also I'm not sure how my guild is going to take me leaving. I dont go with them to 25mans often, other than to sub in as ret or heals....or prot.....really whatever they need. But I'm not critical to the guild. Still a recruit, I've started a 10man group with some of them and a few friends, but I dunno.
I hope they aren't bastards about it like the last guild (was mostly 2 officers that had a huge problem with me leaving).

So I've got a couple of low-level alts I mess around with from time to time.
One is a Paladin. He's level 22 and I don't think he's even died yet.

The other is a level 15 gnome mage. She dies constantly. And if she doesn't die, she has to eat/drink after every other pull. Am I horrible with mages, or are they plexiglass before a certain level? Or is Loch Modan just horribly biased against them (what with it's fire-immune mobs and mobs that can heal and such)?

I've always remembered Loch Modan as kind of hellish for low levels. Lots of mobs that are really close to each other, especially that In Defense of King's Lands chain and the one where you get supplies from the kobold-infested mine.

Are you playing a fire mage? I guess you're only 15 so fire spells are your bread and butter and you're not far into the trees.

While I am not terribly experienced with mages it looks like the biggest thing for soloing is getting properly talented down the frost tree. You can freeze the enemies which gives you a much increased chance to crit, slow them again with blizzard which re-applies crit debuffs, etc. etc. But much of that comes later...

Level 20 is where life gets much better (as for most classes). You'll get Blink for quick escapes and Evocation to quickly restore your mana, and as a perk you can start learning town teleports. Most importantly you get Blizzard. At 28 you can start conjuring mana gems which is another quick mana aid.

EDIT: I would suggest moving to Elwynn/Westfall, personally.

I played a mage to 18 and had the exact same experience. Cast spell, mob runs up and beats on me, frost nova (I think), get to a safe distance and cast another spell, mob runs up and continues hitting me, ugh.

Wasn't fun for me. I deleted the hell out of that character.

Yeah, those were the two I was referencing. The kobolds in the mines can make themselves or others immune to fire for 10 seconds, and the troggs are just a damn pain. I'm up to the third or fourth trogg quest where I have to go deep into the cave (which requires fighting through all the other troggs I killed in the prior quests just to get there) in order to face troggs that heal each other and pull more because they're all so close together and hiding behind corners and such.
Still, I've done Loch Modan a few times before and don't remember having quite as much trouble as I'm having with the Mage. Of course, that was with a rogue/warrior/warlock who I believe all had spell interrupts already by that point.

Edit: I actually was considering just packing up and heading to Westfall last night. Instead I logged out and played the Pally.

For leveling a mage, you have two good routes to go. Fire spec will let you kill a single target quickly while Frost will let you kill a single target a bit more slowly while having more control. With fire you can do some major burst aoe later on, but you are a bit more at risk from melee attacks. Frost aoe makes me want to laugh as I watch an army of enemies being frozen in place while blizzard whittles away at their health bars.

So, if you go fire, try and focus on single mobs. They'll usually die around the time they get into melee range. If it has some health left, frost nova / blink, and get another spell or two off to kill them.

For frost, with single targets you might need to kite them a bit more. Frostbolt them until they get into range then frost nova them in place. With shatter later on you get a crit bonus against frozen targets, so you can then cast another frost spell or two for a bunch of burst damage. If the enemy is still alive blink away and repeat.

While leveling (at higher levels at least) you can look for groups of mobs that contain mostly melee, mount up and run through a bunch of enemies, circle around to group them up, then aoe them down. With fire, aoe is a bit more bursty. I've found that I take a bit more damage when trying to aoe a large group with fire spec. With frost you just frost nova everything in place, blink away, then pelt them with blizzard. With frost talents everything gets slowed / frozen, which then boosts your crit chance causing blizzard's damage to ramp up.

So I love minions, and I just realized there is some real potential to have big armies now, what with stuff like Mirror image, summoned wolves, summoned trees...

There's the horde trinket that summons 3 peasants and the trinket that summons 3 gnomes. There's a trinket that summons a tentacle, and the recent bubble-hearth paladin one, and the engineering stuff like the exploding sheep. And the sword from halloween that summons pumpkin dudes. And of course the noncombat pets.

What's the biggest army one could have out at once? Seems like a frost-specced mage is a good starting point for the 3 clones and the water elemental.
