SciFi Channel's complete and utter decay is complete, changes name to "Syfy"
"The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular," Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel, told TVWeek. "It's somewhat cooler and better than the name 'Science Fiction.' But even the name Sci Fi is limiting."
The stupidity of this movement can not be overstated. Of course, it was inevitable the moment they started showing things which weren't Science Fiction on the Sci-Fi channel.
I can see the logic behind rebranding the channel name for marketing purposes, but Brooks' quote there is rubbish and more than that, so is the new name chosen to replace Sci-Fi.
If they think the reason chicks don't watch their programming is because of the name then they should give themselves bonuses because they're execs and that's how they roll.

I mean honestly, any benefit they may gain from changing the name is totally lost in total alienation of their original audience (including girls who DID follow the channel) and the choosing of a retardedly stupid name.

bullshit they're going to alienate their audience
you really think some neckbeard is going to stop watching stargate or BSG because of this?

Way to name brands that are at or near the end of their lifespans.

my point is that i think their core audience is already pretty locked in and no one is going to stop watching shows because of a name change
thing is, the sci-fi channel was probably failing for exactly the reasons expressed in this thread
aside from a few sci-fi gems (that are coming to a close), how many worthwhile sci-fi programs are actually out there that aren't old or rubbish? not enough to sustain a whole network, unless you know all they want to do is run syndicated reruns of older stuff over and over again.
to be fair it could also be that they are defining "sci fi" too narrowly, too
either way they do need to broaden their scope and changing the name is one way to do that
problem is, they chose a fucking stupid name and they have a network exec making fucking stupid comments
there's a way for him to say what he wanted to say instead of saying it the way he said it... it's honestly a sound marketing strategy executed in the worst fucking way possible

well compared to the amount of people they are going to attract because of it

I never said that
I said any BENEFIT (in a branding/marketing standpoint) they gain from the change is going to be lost
it basically means they won't gain much from it because the channel's already portrayed itself to be run by a bunch of fucktards
they won't lose their original audience base, but they won't gain much more beyond it if this is how they choose to market themeslves
put it this way... they will gain as many viewers as they will lose, because while the overall audience base won't change, there are sure as hell going to be some who DO stop watching

yeah, kinda
I doubt they'll gain any audience and I'm pretty sure they'll lose some.

"When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is actually this is how you'd text it. It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise."
this however is the most retarded thing i have read today

they're trying to appeal to a broader audience so they don't fucking die
but it's ending so
you really think some neckbeard is going to stop watching stargate or BSG because of this?
That was pretty much when I gave up on the network.
Battlestar Galactica would like a word with you.
And Eureka too.
EDIT; Holy god I was late on that.

sure "sci fi" has baggage
but "syfy" is just stupid
and I'll bet most people would pronounce it wrong if they didn't already know what it was referring to
Or G4/TechTV becoming SpikeTV
you mean like how it transformed from a network nobody cares about to a network nobody cares about

"remind me again why i want to watch a channel about VD?"
that's
that's exactly what I said

all we've seen is the name change
they haven't really shown how they're going to run the channel differently
because a wealthy person has done something stupid and mocking them makes us feel better
My heart mourns for their loss.
