I use VLC for stuff. Like playing video files and DVDs. Recently, though, and I don't think I changed anything, VLC stopped outputting video. Audio is still there, and it auto-sizes to the video size, but the output is just black.
I updated to the latest version, and that hasn't changed anything. Any advice?
Download Media Player Classic HC. If it works, you should be happier with it anyway. It's a better player.
Aside from that, in the newest version of VLC you'll want to go to Tools->Preferences->Video and either fuck around with the "Output" dropdown or maybe just try hitting "Reset Preferences."
I had a feeling someone was going to suggest this. I am actually using Media Player Classic as a backup. The problem is there's a video I want to play that's mp4... Or quite a few, actually, and MPC won't play them. I can't play it in QuickTime because it doesn't support multiple audio tracks.
I also tried looking through Preferences->Video and clicking "Reset Preferences" before I made this thread, and both were a no-go.
Black output almost sounds like an overlay problem. If you have multiple monitors or multiple other things playing video the video overlay might be going somewhere else. Maybe. I don't entirely understand how overlays work, I just know I've had problems on occasion because the number of overlays is limited (to one in my case).
Of course I've also had problems with VLC that were just weird and magically were fixed upon restarting the computer, like only the blue channel of the video coming up (which ruined Requiem for a Dream for me incidentally). So...no telling.
The newest VLC versions have been giving me some real headaches when it comes to playback, so I switched to GOM Player. Plays almost everything directly, and if it doesn't, it loads the codecs for you.
