Armed Assault II: This time its personal. . . .

So what is Armed Assault and why is it getting a sequel? Well Armed Assault, or ArmA, is the spiritual successor to Operation Flashpoint.
What is that you ask? Well I would just kill myself right now if I were you.

ArmA and Operation Flashpoint are military sims. Sure they look like FPS. They got guns, grenades, missiles, all the stuff you've come to love
in a FPS. However they are to FPS games as War games are to RTS games. That is to say ArmA and OpFlash are brutally realistic when it comes
to war fighting. Often times you will be killed even before you realize you're even being shot at! Aside from the grunt work of an infantry soldier,
ArmA and OpFlash also have tanks, light armored vehicles, helicopters, airplanes and artillery! Playing a massive multiplayer game of Capture the Island
is an experience that simple cannot be expressed in mere human words.

So, on to ArmA 2 itself. Here is the feature list!
  • Player-driven story
Role-playing and resource management elements. Command your troops through a branching campaign full of twists and surprises.

  • Extensive multiplayer
Play the entire solo campaign cooperatively or dive into huge PvP battles for control of the whole map.

  • Mission Editor
The Intuituive, powerful mission editor lets you design your own missions in minutes or create intricate and unique campaigns. Infinitely extend the game!

  • Authentic weapon simulation
Bullet ballistics and deflection, material penetration, real-world magazine capacity, tracers, ammunition types and stopping power.

  • Unique AI
No scripts, no pre defined pathways. AI adapt and use the open environment on the fly. AI share information, flanking and taking cover to surprise and outsmart players.

  • Dynamic conversation system.
ArmA 2 integrates preset conversations with dynamic queries about the game environment. Talk to soldiers in the field and civilians caught up in the fighting. Soldiers shout and use hand gestures based on real world military doctrine.

Where does this game take place this time?

Chernarus (Black Russia)

Although ArmA 2 is set in the fictional ex-soviet state of 'Chernarus' the gameworld is actually a 225 square kilometer chunk of the real world! ArmA 2's highly detailed landscape is a meticulous facsimile of real terrain, modelled using extensive geographical data. This recreated region is brought to life with spectacular environmental effects and populated with dynamic civilian settlements and wildlife. Wild animals roam the atmospheric forests while the people of Chernarus try to live out their lives among the war-torn streets.

Tell me more!

ArmA 2 features a player-driven, branching campaign. Your actions have consequences! Win the hearts and minds of the warring factions inside Chernarus, or play them off against one another! Your choices will shape the future country. Ultimately, you decide which faction (if any) survives to rule. Will you establish a lasting peace, or kick off a final war?

So what are these factions?

sign-usmc.pngUnited States Marine Corps

USMC deployment in Chernarus consists of 27th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), which is supposed
to overturn the balance in the civil war in the favor of Chernarussian government. Marines are skilled in assymetrical warfare
and are backed up by superior weapons and technology.

sign-cdf.pngChernarussian Defence Forces

Chernarussian military has been trained by Western armies in past years, but it retains weapons and equipment of the
Soviet Army, its direct predecessor. Its main task during the past years for was to fight challenging counter-insurgecy campaign
in the mountaineous regions of Northern Chernarus.

sign-rus.pngRussian Armed Forces

Russian contingent of Chernarussian Peacekeeping Forces consists of elite Guard Motor Rifle battalion, reinforced by armor, artillery
and attack helicopter detachments. Based on their previous experience with counter-guerilla operations, Russians also make good
use of special forces.

sign-chdkz.pngChernarussian Movement of the Red Star

Although the communist insurgency has its roots as an underground movement, it is now a conventional force with military structure
and weapon platforms captured from the Chernarussian government or provided by international arms dealers. This has given ChDKZ
enough power to start a coup against the government.

signs-napa.pngNational Party

Nationalist guerillas of the National Party is an underground movement lacking sophisticated weapons, but their knowledge
of the country, military expertise from civil war and underground network make them serious opponents to both communist
guerillas and government forces.

sign-cdf.pngCitizens of Chernarus

The proud people of Chernarus were divided by the civil war and its consequences. A majority of Chernarussian citizens
are of Chernarussian nationality, with their own language and culture. There is also an ethnic Russian minority living mainly
in the northern territories, where Russian is the second official language. People are also divided by their political alignments
and sympathies.

A couple of previews:
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=202543
http://www.videogamer.com/pc/arma_2/preview-1387.html

And an interview, very enlightening!
http://www.videogamer.com/pc/arma_2/preview-1389.html

The release date is a vague 2009. Some say Q1, some suspect a June release, I doubt even Buddha knows.

So let us discuss ArmA, ArmA II, OpFlash, or hell even OpFlash 2.

Reading that interview it seems BIS really does recognizes what made the ArmA campaign crappy. So far I like what I am hearing and seeing about ArmA 2.

In ArmA news I am looking forward to the Bushwars mod. It looks great.

So is this one going have the famous sniper ai that will automatically kill you from a mile away with a pistol even though you couldn't be more hidden if you yourself were an invisible sentient tree in a forest.

Dont get me wrong, I absolutely adored flashpoint, I played through it and all the expansions in their entirety twice.

ArmA on the other hand, strange enough to say, lacked the soul of flashpoint. It was graphically superior, but the average person who likes this kinda thing could care less really.
Maybe I just grew up to not enjoy it as much after flashpoint.... i dunno.

Still love the very end where you take that plane ride across the island and could actually remember some of the areas where the shit went down, made me all weepy inside. Powerful gaming moments there. End of resistance was kinda tear jerking too, but kinda lame since you just slaughtered twice as many guys that just corner you.

but oh well, I look forward to the latest induction.

    Yes, it did.
It's a fun game if you like simulation. A lot of people are put off by the patience and finesse needed with some of these games.

Looking forward to ArmA 2, though. It was fun sniping in ArmA 1, because you had to compensate for drop and elevation.

Op Flashpoint and Arma are my favourite military games along with the Rainbox Six (PC versions) so I'm going to be all over this. How many games are there out there that actually go into so much detail that it caclulates the drop of a bullet based on the rotation of the earth/ wind and muzzle velocity? Not many, and this is why I love Arma so much.

Oh and the scale, dear god the scale.

Oh dear god I just read the bit about co-op fully through the whole campaign. Now I need new pants, and a new seat.

So far its TBA for the 360. No word on the PS3.

I agree that ArmA certainly did lack the soul OpFlash had. In the interview I linked in the OP the Devs even admit it and go on to say they are working hard to make sure ArmA II has more soul. However ArmA patched up and mod'd is awesome fun in multiplayer.

Also in the previews and interviews I read it sounds like you will basically lead your five man Special Forces unit through the whole game. The inclusion of co-op is delicious icing on the cake. Oh, that and the addition of animals all over the land. For some reason I really like that idea.

They have a multiplayer mode called Warfare in which players battle for control of the island. Each player will be in command of an AI squad, tank crew, etcetera. I believe they said it was something like sixty players in game, each in command of a squad of eight NPCs.

I really hope they work to modernize ArmA2.

I was really, really looking forward to actually getting to play it and I was very excited once I got my new computer.

Then I got to actually install and play it. It was terrible. The graphics were still lackluster and it was horribly clumsy and awkward to try to play. All they had done was grab OpFlash, improve the graphics to a degree not really that acceptable for when it came out, and tear out everything redeemable about it.

OpFlash was great in 2001, but it's too clumsy to hold up now.

Yes, please. I'll still play OpFlash, but the ArmA campaign wasn't very good. The AI broke too often, leaving you stranded with no option but to quit. If they can fix that, and the lackluster graphics, and the incredibly clunky control, I'll be sold forever.

Hell, co-op alone is enough of an improvement for me.

Was at a LAN with about 10 people this weekend, and Operation Flashpoint was still the most played game there. :P

It's really great to just slap some units on the map in the editor, make some waypoints and some mumbo jumbo for objectives, and then you have a nice multiplayer experience.

I loved Flashpoint. LOVED it. But I keep hoping that someday someone will realize that really there are only two appropriate things to do when you build a game with maps this size:

    1. Turn it into an RPG and populate the shit out of it with smaller quests and objectives so it's basically Morrowind with guns.

    2. Spend more time focusing on the Netcode, invest in some IT infrastructure, and collect $10-$15 dollars from me every month because I would abso-fuckin'-lutely pay to play an Operation Flashpoint MMO.

With this and Operation Flashpoint:Dragon Rising coming out, this will fill the military sim hole for the year, the only thing that could make it more perfect is a new Ghost Recon/ Rainbow Six 4 for PC ( none of this "Vegas" stuff).

I've been playing a lot of Xeno's Domination with a friend recently in ArmA, which we picked up when we got sick of warfare. It always amazes me how, even after months of play, we find new ways the game is fucked up and broken.

I hope someday BI makes a game that isn't shockingly buggy, but until that day I'll probably keep on buying and enjoying them.

    Best viewed in HD.

This was an adversarial mission (PCs on both side, NPCs were civilians). I think we were two full squads strong on Blufor (28 guys) and redfor was 1 squad (14 guys). This was a custom map called Afghan Villages. I loved this mission. Unfortunately my own VOIP doesn't record so you can't hear my responses. I'm using TrackIR so my head movements are separated from the rest of my body. Mods used: ACE, and a mod to suppress the voice over sounds of ArmA (ShackTac mod)
