I spent the night at my friends house and I slept on her couch and these past couple days a bump has shown up on the side of my thigh. It's a throbbing red circle on my right leg (leg I was laying on).
I am thinking it could be a spider bite what are the usual symptoms of one and what can I do to alleviate the pain?
Depending on the size of the welt/type of spider you might be able to see 2 little spots where you were bitten in the middle of that circle. Watch for signs of infection. I'd say take a generic painkiller and ice it.
Fun fact: My cousins built their multi-million dollar house on some sort of "den" of brown recluses ten years ago. They've been fighting them off ever since. bi-monthly pest control services.
Also, my neighbor almost had to the tip of his finger amputated because of one of those bastards.
However, I'd be seriously shocked if what you describe turns out to be the work of a recluse. You'd likely have felt the bite itself, and even if you slept through it, I'd think the damage would be more significant by now.
See the doctor if you have any indication of infection. Otherwise, try to keep the swelling down, and don't scratch it.
Yeah, I doubt its a recluse bite, but it sounds like a spider bite. They go away after a while, and sometimes come to head like a pimple.
I live in cincinnati, which is the upper reaches of their range (kinda like mid-indiana), unless the couch was on a woodpile in an attic, I think you should be OK.
They aren't called Recluse without reason.
That being said, if you see any sign of necrosis, freak out.
Various spider bites will give you some sort of necrosis. It is not a big deal unless it continues to spread and becomes painful. I have been bitten in my sleep a few times by spiders up here in Alaska. I went to a doctor for a few of them and was told that there is nothing they can really do in the early stages. They would typically outline it with a marker and tell me if it spreads beyond that, or the necrosis spreads rapidly, that I should come back.

If there is no bite mark, it could be some kind of infection.

I bet this is going the direction where if you say Southern Indiana, we get pictures like this:
FEAR the BROWN RECLUSE

In other words, I wouldn't worry about it.
Also, monitor for signs of RROD.
Youtube made me so sick.
