How bad could ditch digging be?

Is this going to be the type of job I get for a day and quit the same day? Are there some jobs I should just avoid for a second job?

um... I'm sure you didn't apply to be a professional ditch digger. What's the actual job?

I don't have any direct experience doing this, but i cant imagine your talking about ditch digging with machinery. I guess there are some things you need to take in accout:

1: do you like working outside?
2: whats the weather like? If it's hot, you won't be enjoying it.
3: Do you like physical labour?
4: The pay, lets be honest. If they are paying $7 an hour, no ones gonna want to do that.

Think some of those things over i guess, then make a descision. (my spelling fails so bad)

It's good exercise, and you're outside a lot. But I'm sure it's hard work.

Ditch digging using a shovel and axe. Hot, dirty work.

I helped my dad dig up the entire sewage pipes for our house a few times over the course of my life. It's tough work, not the worst job but certainly tough. It's digging so your progress depends on your tools, the weather, and the type of dirt. As far as it being a job, I can offer little help. I just know it was wake up - dig - lunch - dig - shower - sleep for a good week before we got to replacing all the pipes.

I've done a decent amount of ditch digging for work before. It is hot, dirty work, but it's honestly not that bad. The worst part of it comes when you have REALLY hard dirt and/or there are a lot of rocks in it. The other hard part is what you have to do with the dirt. If you have to dig it all out and put it in a wheelbarrow which you then have to dump out quite a ways away from the ditch, that can get old real quick.

That said, it is a great workout, and you'll feel like you've accomplished something when you're done. You'll also feel more manly.

EDIT: Oooh, Florida IS quite hot, and it is only $8/hr. It won't be the most pleasant experience, but if you need the money, go for it. It'll also give you an appreciation of not having to do it for a living

Give it a shot if you really want to. If its one of those jobs that people try and quit a lot at, and the employeer is used to that, then what the hay. But yea, $8 an hour...ouch.

Digging big holes in the ground is objectively unpleasant, especially when it's hot. You get used to it though after a couple weeks, and it's really good exercise if that's something that appeals to you. You'll probably be dead tired when your done, so going from that to a second job might not work out that great.

Whats the worst that could happen if you try it? Decide you don't like it and quit right? Give it a try and you know where the door is (figuratively speaking) if you don't want to do it anymore.

Well I emailed the dude seeing what hours it is. Hopefully I can work 4-5 hours 3 days a week or something as I do have another job.

My point was that just because the minimum wage is $7.25 doesn't mean it's always easy to find a job, even at that wage.

If he needs the money, this is a job.

Ditch digging is an excellent job. You get pretty seriously conditioned very quickly. What is your second job? If it's quite physical you might want to rethink but otherwise you shouldn't have a problem

I think you should take it. I admire your work eithic for considering manual labor in addition to a second job, most people would opt out. Like you said, you're leaving in three months so put forth the effort and you'll not only be in great shape at your next location, you'll also have a little extra money in your pocket.

I dug ditches for one summer in 117 degree heat outside. It was mainly landscaping in soft ground, but I also dug out a pool in indian clay with a pick axe.

It's not that bad if you like hard work outside. If you're the type of person who enjoys going to the gym, then this job will suit you alright. You don't even get that bored imo as long as you have some music playing, and some co workers to chat with.

I would not want to do it in Florida though. That place sucks.

I got paid 7 an hour.

A job at a restaraunt beats it any day and it's about 3x more money.
