The font is significant only really in that it's a symptom of other, larger problems.
At this point, it's a really dumb thing to complain about, though.
These two sentences, one right after the other, contradict themselves. Pointing out that changing a perfectly workable font into something that ties in better with 'marketing synergy' is kind of necessary. If SONY is to learn anything from this generation, they need to know that poor attempts at brand positioning can hurt the bottom line.
The system's been out for a while and the font is the font. It may have made some tiny bit of sense to bitch about it before launch, but the PS3 has lots more things it can be judged on at this point, like games and such.
It strikes me as akin to complaining about the name "Wii." Who cares now, really?
You'd be surprised. I keep hearing mild grumbling about the name.
Anyway, do you people really want me to change the thread title to "we're arguing about fonts?"
We should be debating what font the code on the piece of paper in the box should be in.

The actual name? I remember there was some bickering about the thematic validity of "Xbox 360" until Nintendo came out with Wii and that put an end to that.
360 is a pretty common "name" to remember. The Wii, while not common, was short and easy to remember.
Atari went in increments of 2600. That's the closest I can think of.
We did have the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super NES.
PS3's Font is stupid and the Wii and 360 are both shitty console names.
Move along.

Personally I think the word "Wii" has a bit of mad genius to it, since it's quirky and fun and a bit attractive to the casuals Nintendo was going after. Though at the same time, it may be slightly repellent to the hard-core gamers that would rather chew their arm off than play something that's not teh realistic, only with more explosions.

I think maybe it sounds silly to a lot of people, but that the name of a console ends up being pretty insignificant.
I don't own a Wii, but it's not because it's called the Wii.
At the time, I much preferred "Revolution," the Wii's working title or codename or whatever the Hell it was. In the present, though, I think Wii makes more sense, considering the audience they're shooting for.
"Xbox 360" is kind of the same. It was a lame name before it came out, but now a few years in, it's grown on me.

It's just getting used to it. Anything will sound normal after a while.
I remember thinking the Dreamcast was a retarded name when it was announced. Same with the Gamecube.

Oh sure, I don't think a console's name has a huge amount of influence on people in general, but it can have some sway on a small percentage, particularly people who don't follow the industry obsessively as we do. "Wii" might intrigue a random soccer mom in a way that, say, "3DO" wouldn't.

I'm starting to lose a lot of faith in these industry people. Granted, there wasn't much faith to begin with, but here is Jaffe referring to himself and Sony as "we" and then this little gem from EEDAR today:
Is it a poor profit proposition to release an M-rated DS title? EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich thinks so, estimating that GTA: Chinatown Wars sold only 200,000 units in March.
...
By contrast, though, titles targeted at the M demographic can still thrive on the PSP. "Previous GTA titles on the PSP have sold in excess 1 million units lifetime," Divnich says. "The performance on the DS highlights clearly the demographic differences between the two platforms in the handheld market."
Just so we're clear, a respectable comparison to say M-rated games don't work on the DS is two weeks of sales on the DS (200k) to lifetime sales of a PSP game that's nearly 3 years old (1m+)? Really? The conclusion may prove to be right but I don't think that's the evidence I would use - way too early.
Dualshock has been the worst controller for 3 gens running.
SIXAXIS though was even worse than usual. Too light, felt cheap. At least the DS3 feels right.
I'll agree with that, with the exception of the boomerang. I'm fairly confident that, at least in my case, the thing would be unpleasant as hell to hold, goofy looks aside. Of course, I have long fingers and small palms.
I assumed Nintendo was trying to be 'cute' with the Wii. Right? Cute is okay. I personally don't like cute when it comes to video game consoles (I don't like the name either), but it works. If Nintendo wants to be cute, let them.

I thought we saw numbers that VCS sold only about half a million on the PSP. And I really don't think a prime argument against releasing M rated games on the DS should be centered around a variation on 'Nintendo is teh kiddeez!'. I'm just sayin'...

I wouldn't be surprised if DS games tend to have more of a slow burn for sales whereas for PSP games, most games sales are near launch.
I thought I remembered hearing that the PSP GTA games started doing much. much worse once people realized the each game would be ported to the PS2 eventually.

Eh, the Dualshock was my favorite controller until the 360 hit. Though the Dualshock does kind of suck for FPS games. I just never really played any of those on my PS1/PS2. The boomerang would not have gone over well. It would have been another lolsony moment for them.
I absolutely fucking hate the Spiderman font for the record but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the hell out of my PS3.
I thought I remembered hearing that the PSP GTA games started doing much. much worse once people realized the each game would be ported to the PS2 eventually.
I think that's the theory. The sales numbers for LCS on PSP vs VCS are extremely different. Like half as many were sold for VCS. I know I believe the numbers were down since people were just deciding to wait for the PS2 version.
According to this wiki the Stories games have sold 8 and 4.5 million respectively, but their source is a dead link. The numbers are from Take Two and I would not be surprised if it included PSP and PS2 sales for each.

"Nintendo DS" doesn't seem particularly noteworthy in this regard, and it's doing fine.
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if the Stories series actually did sell 8 million. The two games regularly top the PSP sales charts, but since sales of PSP software are so low overall we generally don't notice.

People knew DS stood for dual screen. And Nintendo was originally pushing the DS as a 'third pillar'. Just in case. Frankly, anything was better than (Something)Boy...

"Xbox 360" is kind of the same. It was a lame name before it came out, but now a few years in, it's grown on me.
Nobody knew what the audience was for Wii when it launched. Remember how Nintendo even acknowledged how many people didn't like it ("We'd like to thank everyone who loved the name.. all two of you"). They launched with a 'core' title, Zelda. In fact, it was the third parties who steered it towards 'casual', not Nintendo. Wii Sports was more of a pack in to demonstrate the abilities of the console, not a true selling point.
Revolution also seems presumptive and doesn't translate well to other consoles.
Reggie also made a good point that Wii can't be shortened or confused. They didn't call it the Nintendo Wii, it's jus the Wii. People say "360" more than "Xbox 360". 360 is very common number, etc.
Remember how many parents and people would call the Gamecube an Xbox, or vice versa, or call something the "Gamestation" or "Playcube"? Notice how everyone never mixes up the Wii with any of the other consoles? There you go :P

Thats what makes it so good 8-)
I actually thought this was a pretty terrible episode. Jaffe especially was pretty bad---coming to a discussion about how the recession affects the market and essentially saying "Man, what are we talking about sales for?"
He much have learned that one from spending time on NeoGAF.
Kind of interesting how the "Xbox 360" is more or less the "Xbox Revolution". When was that name announced, was it well before Nintendo started talking about the "Revolution"? I wonder if that's a reason why Nintendo changed the name, since the basic concept was already taken.

Naw, the reason Nintendo gave was that they wanted a fun, made-up word that would sound decent in every language.
"360" is just a pointless buzzword number various media outlets bolted on their products for a while a few years ago.
I remember that it was supposedly because they thought people would see Xbox 2 and Playstation 3 and be like "well that console has a higher number therefore it's automatically better". Kinda like how Netscape jumped from 4.7 to 6 or 7.0 to match IE, marketing teams.

Heh, I was wondering when the "Hey, remember when the Wii and Xbox 360 were the silliest fucking names ever?" conversation would pop up. I'd don't mind the 360 anymore, but I think the Revolution would have been a better name for the Wii; but that's just my two cents.
I also like how they made the bullshit up about the case being curved because it was supposed to look like it was inhaling or some crap like that.
It's a PC case that has been around for ages. The dells I used at a call center well before the 360 came out looked exactly like 360s with a different faceplate.
Also as it turns out the curve fits the top of the original Xbox perfectly
Goddamn, this thread moves fast on Monday. Either that, or I have way too much work to do so I don't have time to goof around, I mean, take a break anymore.
Naming and branding has always a challenge, especially at MS. Oh god, I have some horror stories to tell. For one thing, the fact that we have a Live (a la Windows Live) and LIVE (a la Xbox LIVE) means we have a problem. If you ever meet me in person, you should take a look at the branding that's plastered on my sleeve (on a team jacket that we all got). It's a bit like NASCAR.
Then again, maybe I shouldn't be complaining. I'm the one who named one of our upcoming releases "Cucumber".

(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
I'm seeing this through. No way we're above 255k in a 4 week month with virtually no games released and no price drop.
Boourns.

Xbox LIVE? Or do you mean one of the codenames?
